Blu-Ray is much better, its just that no-one could afford it.
however HD tv's have come down in price, so have blu-ray players and the economy is getting better so theres no reason to be watching crappy DVD quality anymore.
Ahh I should rephrase that, that sounds bad xD. What I am saying is digital downloads in HD can fit on a DVD anyway, it kind of makes the whole point of blu-ray useless. Blu-Ray is used for HD movies simply because of the huge disc capacity, I don't see the point in digital downloads when they can fit on a DVD anyway.
When I said digital downloads make Blu-Ray pointless I meant that if these digital downloads were really HD they would fit on a DVD, but the quality SUCKS xD.
@brendude95 Not really. The jump from VHS to DVD was a bigger jump than DVD to Blu-Ray. DVDs can be played on Blu-Ray players but VHS couldn't be played on DVD players. DVD's still more popular than Blu-Ray and most people don't see the point in Blu-Ray as the difference is only visible on a really big TV or if you're a couple of feet away from the TV. Also, there are loads more DVDs than Blu-Rays. It's not the same jump
@brendude95 The resolution may be a bigger jump but VHS to DVD was noticeable on pretty much all TVs but DVD to Blu-Ray, you do need a bigger TV to properly see it. Yes it's a good thing but people aren't as worried about their back catalogue as they were when VHS was becoming obsolete. Think about it. I can't watch my VHS on my DVD player or my Blu-Ray player but I can watch my DVDs on both of them. Blu-Ray is advertised enough. People just don't see the point in that much quality.
Like I said, I can see the difference on a 19" screen at a fair distance. The main difference that DVD bought to VHS was much better sound and less "noise", the actual quality increase wasn't so huge.
The jump from DVD to Blu-Ray is worth the extra money, nobody is being forced to buy into it, they are given the option to have better quality movies, that's it. If they do get a Blu-Ray player, they can watch DVD's on it too.
@brendude95 I'm not under-exaggerating it. You're over-exaggerating. I mean "not that many people know about it"? That's just BS. But you'll see in a few years. DVD will still be around and won't be beaten by Blu-Ray the same way DVD beat VHS.
Yes, not that many people know about Blu-Ray and the benefits that it brings! And yes, you are under-exaggerating, the quality difference is the same as the jump from VHS to DVD, if you can't see that then I recommend you fuck off to the nearest opticians.
I don't know your motive, but you are clearly a Blu-Ray hater, can you get any more pathetic?
@brendude95 I'm ending this here. I'm obviously trying to argue with an 8 year old who thinks it's cool to swear, insult people and have a temper tantrum and that somehow that'll make their point any more valid than someone elses. Reply if you want but I have better things to do than argue with some random kid
@brendude95 I really think you gotta shut up. DOn;t start bashing on people and spamming the comments just because no one aggrees with you! You seriouslly act like bluray is your god or sometihing! And don't start tellin people they blind and pathetic just becuase they can't see no difference! Go fuck yourself.....
I wrote replies to his comments, I wrote as much as I needed to.
It's not that nobody agrees with me, he obviously has an agenda, people should see the difference, if they don't then they have sub-par eye sight. This isn't something to agree on, it's fact, the sky is blue and 1080p is sharper and clearer than 480p. The only way it can look the same or worse is if his eye-sight is poor or if his TV is poorly calibrated.
I'm not "acting like bluray is my god or something". I'm giving Blu-Ray as much credit it deserves and defending it against joevictor53's piss poor arguments.
I insulted him because he was blunt, ignorant, and clearly has an agenda, that's it. You have nothing to do with this.
It's obvious at this point that Blu_Ray has more than proved to be a superior software and more manufacturers and studios are supporting it. At this point, in 2010, studios and manufacturers are in cahoots with the idea that a bunch of layers of data as opposed to two (at the most) layers on a dvd is gonna be a better way to go. Without a doubt. bluray. Bluray player's are now (aprrox. 200 bucks) more accesible to people. Recession or not...Fu&* IT, just get a Playstation 3.
When it comes to digital downloads and such, I would still like to have a physical copy of my media (eg. Blu-ray, or a DVD disc). Also, I've been reading that some of the digitally downloaded movies are only 720p versus Blu-ray is 1080p.
I jumped on Blu-ray because Blu-ray is also more durable than DVD with it's hard scratch coating, and tests have proven that unless you take an exacto knife to it, it's hard to scratch. Not impossible, but more difficult than DVDs.
Simple answer is Yes it will. But the real question is when. A couple of years? 10 years? 15 years? Who knows it all depends on many different factors!
Just sold my Blu ray player and disc's.. my DVD player upscales the picture already and the only difference is the surround sound on the blu-ray.. if you don't have a surround system then the blu-ray is pointless in my opinion.. plus most DVDR movies won't always play correctly in blu-ray players in my experiance.
I like what he is saying because why pay so much i mean just wait and like dvds, it will go down and something else might come because of the technology boooooooom!!!!!!
VHS stil pwns DVD's and blu-rays --> they are extremely delicate and will stop working with a tiny scratch or smudge. I cannot understand why DVD/blur-ray makers won't encase the discs in a protective case like UMD's for PSP.
When you record a VHS - simple just find if it's NTSC or PAL. With DVD a nightmare of formats (and still adding) to convert from to MPeg 2/vob files. Then in authoring you have to deal with video/audio bitrate, FPS, aspect ratio and unbelievably long hours of waiting to encode the video into degraded dvd format (esp. in older pc with no core cpu). Then after all these, they still fail to work in some finicky set-top dvd players!
are you sick ? vhs production came to its real end in 2008. No one is producing them anymore...You can't even compare that piece of shit with the outstanding quality of dvd and bd. Vhs can easily broke if the player is old while with dvd there is no contact between the disc and the laser that read it... I have had dvds for years and noone of them has a scratch !
Dvd's and cd's do worse when it comes to durability --- libraries still have VHS in their holdings and they work good. On the other hand they also have dvd's and most of them are problematic -- skipping, stopping and sometimes they just downright don't work. Digital video form is okay -- but too many formats ---- the media dvd's and blu-rays - not that good (forget the salivating hype-riddled tech magazines)
again totally wrong... dvd and optical discs have a much higher durability than vhs...something like 300 years ! and yes some libraries still have those useless piece of shit... and noone go to borrow them. IF the libraries dvds are problematic is because all people are using them and people do not repect those disk and so they scratch them a lot.... Compare those you buy from the store... Still how can you defend such a bad quality format like vhs ? Come on it was disgusting even before dvd
Blu-Ray has sctrach protection. the blu ray laser can bypass scratches unless there REALLY bad. so there really isnt wear and tear on blu-ray. just the really bad scratch
i know i do. but eventually, discs get scratches. no matter how hard you try not to scratch them. (unless you dont use them at all). it also would help parents with 3 year olds that watch kid movies like seasame street because let say the kid finds the movie and takes it out and plays with the movie until his mom would put it in for him. that movie would get scratched so bad that after a few weeks, it would freeze or skip
Most likely, but just as when DVD came out and VHS was popular it took along time for DVD to take over. But like he said buying/Downloading movies off the internet will eventually takeover.
i personally think all three formats may actually co-exist for a long time. dvd has a good chance of surviving too since blu-ray players can indeed play dvds as well.
im sorry but blu rays will not be taking over are you seriously thinking that everyone is just able to run out and buy hd tvs? haha it not going to happen
I hate how people buy Blu-Ray for picture quality because that's not a good reason to buy Blu-Ray. The only real true benefit is sound quality because while up converting DVD's to 1080p can come close to Blu-Ray you can't beat uncompressed sound. To be honest there is not enough sound buffs in the world to set Blu-Ray at the top so I think Digital Download will become the next big thing. Then we will ask the question who is the best to download from in terms of speed, reliability, quality.
everything in technology will inevitably become obsolete. that it unless we come up with 1000 nanobyte disks with transfer speeds of of up to 100 nanobyte/s. the current top end 240hz 1080p tvs will become obsolete.... resolutions can still keep going higher, 10000p, etc..
I think blu ray will make dvd obsolete when it comes to gaming because of how much it holds. PS3 developers have a long way to go before needing extra space (except for Metal Gear Solid 4). This leads to better quality games that aren't held back by space. The only problem is Blu Ray Drives aren't as mainstream as DVD drives are. Way back when people had problem getting DVD drives and were stuck with CD drives.
The next console cycle will bring with it the Digital Download age. We already buy most games on PC digitaly and the same will be said for next gen consoles.
Ya like when the original xbox came out i was always knew some console would make all the games downloadable. Which it's happening. On the new Xbox 360 dashboard preview/beta program. They are making full xbox 360 games downloadable.
DVDs will become obsolete. It's inevitable. But not any time soon, and not nearly as quickly as DVD took out VHS. Think about it. All Blu-Ray Players can play DVDs. Therefore, all Blu-ray owners can't really get rid of their DVD player, and thus will likely continue to use DVDs for at least a little while. Only a small percentage of DVD PLayers play VHS, and when they do, it's still two seperate devices in one housing, really.
yea but take this into consideration are you saying everyone in the world is just going to be able to run out and buy hd tvs? i think not especially with illegals running around this country like flys on a piece a poo
I still like DVD but im tryna get all my movies on Blu Ray now since I have a ps3.I dont think dvd is going anywhere anytime soon but I believe will eventually die away like vhs did a few years after the dvd format was released.
yeah i know, but it's expensive to buy a blue ray, and i'd rather just buy a ps3 but i'm not sure if they will allow discs that aren't official like the first xbox did with cds and dvds
personally me dvd is going to die since like how all tv signals are 100% digital there already planing to do all tv signals in HD so even though there is up converting dvd players of all sorts even the new Slim line DLP Mitsubishi tvs have up converting people are going to want HD because its going to be forced.
A forgotten factor is data backup, and blank small optical media.
There is still A LOT of blu ray like producing quad layer and even 8 layer discs each double the amount of data storage up to 200 gigs on a SINGLE disc.
also blank dvds are VERY cheap at like 100 for 20$ and blu ray dvds are 140-160 for only 25 single layer Blu rays
in this econ BD adoption will be slower than dvd because of cost
well duh thats how everything is, a recent example, tvs and monitors, HD was expensive, but now they are about the same price as 480 tvs were before hds came out.
I remember when DVD came out in the UK, and new films on VHS were around £9, and the DVD version were £15, or something like that, huge difference, but price did begin to fall.
i have like 10 blu rays to me it might stay like this untell people can afford it digital is good because if ur smart u can get the movie for free by viva torrent and u can do what ever u want with it put in a dvd or in ur xbox or ps3 ipod i belive i really like digital and bluray i dont really buy dvd because of the digital thing
Slycooper1020 your talking about piracy, and at the cost you are getting inferior video and no extras, pay the $25.00 for the DVD 2 disc digital copy special edition and you will not be wasting your time and the extra amoutn they tack onto your internet bill for going over the downloading cap. Who would want inferior pixilated video that could possiblt contain a virus somewhere in the files when they can get a legit copy of a movie.
1. i never said i do do that i said u can but it is not smart digital copy like the one that come with some blu ray movies and downloading cap? i dont have that and i can gust rent the movie fro netflix (which i am now only bluray movie thugh becase i see no reason to put dvd on it) and there r many ways to get a digital copy im not saying i do do that im saying there is a lot of ways but it is not the right thing to do
I don't like blue Ray because one it's a lot of money to buy a blueray DVD I'm not going to pay almost 30 or 50 dollers for a movie 2 is 600.00 or 700.00 for a blueray player or u can go out and buy a playstation 3 for 600.00
I like playstation but I'm not going to spend that much on a game system
But I do think that by next year That blueray
Is going to be the best to get and DVD will be the next VHS and be cheap to by DVD
Hey i still have a hybrid dvd and vhs player and it still works amazing but blu ray is real good but only if you got the money and hdtv cause with out an hdtv your really not gonna see a difference and it also tough times for most people right now so i would say dvd is really what you should stick with right now at least for a few more years
Blu ray over DvD is an obvious answer. The quality that Blu ray has to offer is really amazing and if you saw a comparison between two same movies you could see the outstanding difference between both. I love blu ray but i'm not sure it will replace DvD for a long time.
speaking about games, Blu ray can have more game content instead of packing that same conente into 2 or more discs. Personally i dont care because i do not own a PS3 but an Xbox 360 and load times are not a problem on either console ( on some cases)
actually there is a dual layered blu-ray disc that can hold up to 250GB. that's alot of space, But yeah, a standard bluray disc is dual layered which will give you about 50GB
yes but thats honestly useless. For id say 80% of viewers , the quality will be unchanged since the tv size is small and doesnt support them. Plus noone is gonna wanna have a 8GB movie on their Hard drive , when there is a 500MB-1GB movie that is practically the SAME quality.
DVD is not gonna die, but Blueray will def get a huge marketshare.
But the part you dont understand is the better the resolution the more space its gonna take up yea theres movies that are around 1GB but the difference between that and the 8GB one is not quality but content. The ones you see that are between 500mb and 1gb are mostly downloads for the movie only without subtitles, extra languages and special features.Thats why most movies that are over 2hrs long with alot of special features usually uses a 8gb dual layer dvd.
the thing about streaming is that you usually dont have the option to stream in full hd, as blu ray you do-- alough streaming should dominate

The jump from DVD to Blu-Ray is very similar to the jump from VHS to DVD, the resolution is a MUCH bigger jump.
If DVD's can be played on Blu-Ray players, isn't that a GOOD thing, more of an incentive to buy a Blu-Ray player?
People don't see the point in Blu-Ray because it isn't advertised enough and people are waiting for the price to go down.
I can tell the difference between DVD and Blu-Ray on a 19" 720p TV while sitting roughly 6 feet away from the TV.

Only a small percentage of DVD PLayers play VHS, and when they do, it's still two seperate devices in one housing, really.
homestar92 2 years ago
yea but take this into consideration are you saying everyone in the world is just going to be able to run out and buy hd tvs? i think not especially with illegals running around this country like flys on a piece a poo
cubfanjw6 2 years ago
eventually it will , but I still use CDRs
ThingsontheWeb 2 years ago
blue ray is fail. Too expensive and i really don't care about the quality. I still have a vhs player and some $30 dvd player that works 100% good.
Garyyx24 2 years ago
I still like DVD but im tryna get all my movies on Blu Ray now since I have a ps3.I dont think dvd is going anywhere anytime soon but I believe will eventually die away like vhs did a few years after the dvd format was released.

MootPoon817 2 years ago
ppl will still pirate movies just now they will be on blu-ray just like they did with vhs and dvd a blu -ray disc writers are on the market
nukeking1 2 years ago
yeah i know, but it's expensive to buy a blue ray, and i'd rather just buy a ps3 but i'm not sure if they will allow discs that aren't official like the first xbox did with cds and dvds
MootPoon817 2 years ago
we will just pirate blu-ray rips :D
Cartman356 2 years ago
Also, you get on-demand movies from cable or satellite TV
markbyrn 2 years ago
personally me dvd is going to die since like how all tv signals are 100% digital there already planing to do all tv signals in HD so even though there is up converting dvd players of all sorts even the new Slim line DLP Mitsubishi tvs have up converting people are going to want HD because its going to be forced.

kidpop23 2 years ago
A forgotten factor is data backup, and blank small optical media.
There is still A LOT of blu ray like producing quad layer and even 8 layer discs each double the amount of data storage up to 200 gigs on a SINGLE disc.
also blank dvds are VERY cheap at like 100 for 20$ and blu ray dvds are 140-160 for only 25 single layer Blu rays
in this econ BD adoption will be slower than dvd because of cost
ctoon6 2 years ago
for now. maybe search a bit what the price of DVDs when VHS was still alive. during that time..
Blu Ray WILL get cheaper someday.
kidpop23 2 years ago 4
well duh thats how everything is, a recent example, tvs and monitors, HD was expensive, but now they are about the same price as 480 tvs were before hds came out.
ctoon6 2 years ago
yep.
kidpop23 2 years ago
I remember when DVD came out in the UK, and new films on VHS were around £9, and the DVD version were £15, or something like that, huge difference, but price did begin to fall.

i have like 10 blu rays to me it might stay like this untell people can afford it digital is good because if ur smart u can get the movie for free by viva torrent and u can do what ever u want with it put in a dvd or in ur xbox or ps3 ipod i belive i really like digital and bluray i dont really buy dvd because of the digital thing
slycooper1020 2 years ago
Slycooper1020 your talking about piracy, and at the cost you are getting inferior video and no extras, pay the $25.00 for the DVD 2 disc digital copy special edition and you will not be wasting your time and the extra amoutn they tack onto your internet bill for going over the downloading cap. Who would want inferior pixilated video that could possiblt contain a virus somewhere in the files when they can get a legit copy of a movie.
raymondleeleggs 2 years ago
1. i never said i do do that i said u can but it is not smart digital copy like the one that come with some blu ray movies and downloading cap? i dont have that and i can gust rent the movie fro netflix (which i am now only bluray movie thugh becase i see no reason to put dvd on it) and there r many ways to get a digital copy im not saying i do do that im saying there is a lot of ways but it is not the right thing to do
slycooper1020 2 years ago
I don't like blue Ray because one it's a lot of money to buy a blueray DVD I'm not going to pay almost 30 or 50 dollers for a movie 2 is 600.00 or 700.00 for a blueray player or u can go out and buy a playstation 3 for 600.00
I like playstation but I'm not going to spend that much on a game system
But I do think that by next year That blueray
Is going to be the best to get and DVD will be the next VHS and be cheap to by DVD

i have a few crazy dvd/vhs hybrids but there starting to break so i juust use game consoles to watch movies
NitrogenKing 2 years ago
Blu-Ray because of ps3's because thats a lot of players
arturomlk92 2 years ago 3
Hey i still have a hybrid dvd and vhs player and it still works amazing but blu ray is real good but only if you got the money and hdtv cause with out an hdtv your really not gonna see a difference and it also tough times for most people right now so i would say dvd is really what you should stick with right now at least for a few more years

Blu Ray has already made DVD completely obsolete.
kyleman1313 2 years ago 3
I think it will, bu it's not like the transition from VHS to DVD was instantaneous, and neither will this one.

I think something else will come out better then blu-ray to replace the Dvds

Given that ppl still use CD's... People will still be using DVD's for quite a while but BR is going to take over for sure.
MajinFrahma 2 years ago 4
yes it will but not for a few years
MyGrandmaTheArsonist 2 years ago 3
Blu ray over DvD is an obvious answer. The quality that Blu ray has to offer is really amazing and if you saw a comparison between two same movies you could see the outstanding difference between both. I love blu ray but i'm not sure it will replace DvD for a long time.
lSmGProductionsl 2 years ago 2
however blu ray has long load times, primarily speaking about games.
SoadBYOB9 2 years ago
speaking about games, Blu ray can have more game content instead of packing that same conente into 2 or more discs. Personally i dont care because i do not own a PS3 but an Xbox 360 and load times are not a problem on either console ( on some cases)
lSmGProductionsl 2 years ago
not the dev does it right
pinky315 2 years ago
honestly i never saw a single blu-ray movie is there a big difference?
NYDan9 2 years ago
To give you an idea Blurays can hold 25 gigs and DVDs hold 4 gigs.
OldSkooRebel 2 years ago 2
actually there is a dual layered blu-ray disc that can hold up to 250GB. that's alot of space, But yeah, a standard bluray disc is dual layered which will give you about 50GB
kyleman1313 2 years ago
Actually a single layer blu ray disc can hold 25gb,dual layer can hold 50gb and a single layer dvd can hold 4.7gb dual layer can hold 8.5gb
Tunerboy8732 2 years ago
yes but thats honestly useless.
RileysWill 2 years ago
But the part you dont understand is the better the resolution the more space its gonna take up yea theres movies that are around 1GB but the difference between that and the 8GB one is not quality but content. The ones you see that are between 500mb and 1gb are mostly downloads for the movie only without subtitles, extra languages and special features.Thats why most movies that are over 2hrs long with alot of special features usually uses a 8gb dual layer dvd.
