From what I can see this is in effect just colour blending but in more relaxed steps to get the transition instead of doing it while the paint is still wet, works well.
@RyokoOhki Basically it is yes. Just numerous layers of paint instead of the good old blend. It's called feathering, could be wrong though but I believe it was.
