Fantastic, absolutely fantastic,as a long time Disney fan I loved this ride and was trying to remember just how many waterfalls was in the caverns, one of the attractions that just gave you 'breather' from all the other rides. You are incredible at your craft!!!
Just incredible! Totally loved this. Can't believe that was aluminum foil...I never would have thought of that. I'm sure it was the thicker stuff too keep it's shape while you painted right?
Do you have other vids like this of the other builds???
No, they are not rebuilding Rainbow Caverns (I am though). Big Thunder Mountain sits where this ride was now (the maintenance facility for the coaster trains is where the original Rainbow Caverns use to be),
That was awesome! Great job! I always wished I could have seen this ride for myself as it was way before my time but seeing a scale model of it is quite amazing.
Hi my family are huge Disneyland fans and this attraction had just closed the first time I went to D'land in '77 when I was eight. Can we see your model when it's done? We live in Seattle.
It will be a long time before it's finished as many areas are being redone (including the Rainbow Caverns shown in the video). But when it's done, I'll have a lot of videos on it. Also, take a look at my blog in the sidebar which is documenting the project.
Amazing! How did you get the layout and all the details? I know there are older concept drawings and postcards to look at as well as footage on the Disney Treasures dvds, but how did you keep the same level of detail for an extinct attraction? Amazing.
Also, what's the song name (the pirates one, not the raindow caverns theme)?
I'm doing this off reference from any source I can find; photos, drawings, videos. I try to be as accurate as possible with the space I give for each area. There are a ton of compromises that had to be done to fit everything which would make this layout a selectively compressed layout. But just about every scene and feature on the old ride are represented in some way on the layout.
The song is "He's a Pirate (Ship Ahoy Tribal Remix)"
@STNautilus I've seen posters on other sites of the Nature's Wonderland Railroad layout and lots of photos and postcards of the different features. You're probably using those for reference too. There's plenty of source material to draw on.
do you do this from memory or plans, videos? How accurate would you say it is? I've been looking for as many videos as possible, since I never got to ride it :(
I'm doing this off reference from any source I can find; photos, drawings, videos. Certainly not from memory, considering I wasn't even around long after it closed. As for accuracy, I try to be as accurate as possible with the space I give for each area. There are a ton of compromises that had to be done to fit everything which would make this layout a selectively compressed layout. But just about every scene and feature on the old ride are represented in some way on the layout.
Amazing video and fabulous artistic work. I did have the good fortune of actually riding a few times. Music sounds as I remember it- is that the actual soundtrack? Either way, could you please let me know who the artist is? Thanks.
It is THE actual music they used from the ride, yes. Disney put out a 6 disk box set titled "Musical History Of Disneyland" which includes a track that consists of the entire ride narration as well as the Rainbow Caverns music.
It's not floral foam; that stuff is WAY too soft. I'm using a denser foam that I obtained from Foam Sales in Burbank. There's also a foam called Balsa foam that some art stores carry, which is pretty simliar to what I use.
Awesome. The Mine Train was my all-time favorite ride and still the best ride Disneyland has ever had. And the Rainbow Caverns was the best part of the ride. I was heartbroken with they discontinued it. And even more so when I realized they demolished the Rainbow Caverns. It was an incredibly beautiful place.
A few questions: Is this the original soundtrack played in the caverns? The caverns seemed to be be bigger at the photos. Was it only that short turn and then out again? I wish, it would still exist!!!
There was a lot more of the caverns in real life than what I built. I only built what I could fit in such a small space. I mainly based the overall look of it off a photo of the rainbow caverns from a National Geographic from '63
Yes, it is a shame. So many original attractions are gone. I do remember the waterfall mountain of Nature's wonderland and was shocked, when I red. that they tore it down, too. I am also a liitle bit disappointed about the redoing of "Pirates of the Caribbean" in the more political correct way. But nevertheless: Disneyland is great. Besides efteling in the Netherlands it is my favourite park. Greetings from Germany and good luck for your further models, Knuspi
It's hard to say, maybe 50%? That number fluctuates a lot, since I've been redoing a lot of areas. (I started the layout nearly 4 years ago, when my skills weren't up to par to where they are now.)

It's a 4 layers of aluminum foil, it was thin stuff to begin with. I only have 3 time lapse videos at the moment for just this project.

are they rebuilding the rainbow taverns? because i was born in the 80's, so i never got to see this, and what ride or area is in its place now?

That's that name of the place, "Foam Sales". Do a google search on Foam Sales in Burbank and it should come up.
