Our cairn acts the same way. Cute! He hates cats though and goes crazy when he sees a stray. He also tries to attack passing cars! He weighs about 20 lbs but acts like he's a lion!

You could probably handle cairn as long as you got an adult one that is already house broken and perhaps crate trained. A cairn terrier puppy wouldn't be a good idea for your schedule. I have an epileptic cairn terrier and because she's on medicine that keeps her a bit more calm than a normal cairn, she's pretty much at the right energy level for me.

Cairn terriers are very barky at people who ring the doorbell or walk in front of your window. Mine is very friendly to people on the street when I'm walking him on the leash. And once a guest is in the house and everyone relaxes, he is very nice to them. Cairns and Westies probably have the same personality and health. Cairns like to kind of be the boss. They don't take orders too quickly. Sometimes I have to tell him to "come here" about 10 times before he will do it!

Thank you very much! One thing I didn't mention is that I have a dog already, he's a combination of scottish and westie terriers. He is 6 years old and he's a very sweet dog, he hasn't given any trouble for all the time that I've had him but I don't know if he'll get along with the new dog :S What can I do?

2 things. I had a cairn who just recently passed away. I enjoyed 12 good years with her. The second is about telling him several times before they do it, kids (human) are like that too.

But one good thing about Cairn's is their personality.

Hey! I'm deciding between buying a Cairn Terrier or a West Highland White Terrier! I really can't see much of a difference between them but I would like to know if anyone can give me some info regarding the dog's temperament, and size. I want a dog that wont grow much the smaller I can get and also a dog who is not hostile with the people who come to my house and one that takes orders easily. I don't want an annoying pet. Considering this could someone tell me which one is better for me? Thanks!

hi, westies are a bit bigger than cairns but on the whole i think a cairn is a tougher breed, i had one for 16 years and was devastated when he died, its been 9 years since he died and i can still smell him and feel him! they are very loyal and very intelligent, i would go for a female if i were you (i had a male) because males can be a little cocky and tend to mark thier territory..even after desexing! OMG that picture of Gus lying on the couch looks just like my cairn OZZY who is 11 months old. I have to keep him on lead when ever we go out because he barks and chases everything that moves.they are such a lovable breed. this is my second cairn. my 1st was a female named ruffles. she live a long life and brought us such joy. waited about six years before I decided I wanted another one. so glad we got ozzy he is so loving and fun except for when he chewed holes in my walls.

I cannot break Gus of this habit either. OUr neighbors get the newspaper delivered every morning at the same time. It is 5 minutes of pandemonium. Gus goes berzerk! Nothing stops him from his angry barking. The rest of the day he is a little angel!! Oh well, we have to live with it.

Jumping around on furniture! ha ha ha When the trash man comes driving buy or any truck with a deep rumble he turns into freaking doctor Jeckle and goes ape!!! God forbid the door bell rings, someone may get bit when that happens! I learned a long long time ago that I couldnt break him of it. Its just how he is! His name is Rascal and hes a great dog and VERY protective of my daughters.

Unfortunately after 16 years together, his health had deteriorated to such an extent that I had to put him to sleep last October. Gus always barks when I play this video. He is barking at himself! He hates the newspaper delivery guy at 5 a.m. He goes berserk. He also does not like to be picked up when laying down, especially by a woman. That makes him very grumbly.

He was playing fetch with a ball out in the lawn yesterday. He plays so hard that he damaged his "dew claw" on his front foot. It bled, and he licks it all day long. Has that ever happened to any other cairn people???

Gus is GREAT! Our Lucy has worn all the paint off the radiator under the window doing her "guarding" duties. I notice Gus has a lead attached when out and about. Your Gus is just as sweet as all the Cairn terriers I've ever seen! They all have that unique Cairn disposition that only Cairn lovers can recognize!!! We lost our Gizmo 7 years ago and now have a Havanese (smallest of the Bichon Frisé family) but I'll always love the Cairn Terrier breed!

I love this video. I have three little Cairns in my life and I raised them to sell for a while..they are so much fun. My last little boy died at the age of 17. The vet said his body just quit..he was in no pain. He had fun until the day he died.

My Cairn sounds exactly the same. You need to let Gus dig outside. They live to dig. Also, your wife's voice needs to go down an octive so Gus doesn't think she's a mouse. Cairn's love to chase Mice too.
