@kalanihooya I think was Joe Marshall played bass like one guitar. And now Ocean Kaowili does, too. Can hear Gabby sing this in the sound track of the movie "The Descendants". All Hawaiian music for the soundtrack.
@Opqosite--I believe the bass player was none other than Manuel "Joe Gang" Kupahu. Part of the Gabby Pahinui Hawaiian Band, he was visible and popular and used a standup; liked to sit with the bass across his lap and play...
thanks for your nice comments. glad you like the music. the song is off gabby's rabbit island music festival album. haven't picked it up on CD yet so sorry for the LP pops. (the pictures are just photos of different places on oahu, kauai and the big island) take care.
Gabby was a musical genius. He could play lap steel, slack key, his unique voice was beautiful. There was a television special made before he passed where he jammed with his sons and friends. Check him out, there aren't many like him around anymore.
No I don't! Man, what a bummer. I think it aired on channel nine back in the day. Maybe the TV stations would know if we contacted them. It aired back in the early 90's.
was driving along kam on the scenic north and eastern shores of Oahu when this song came on 940 kkne... das living the da' good life!

Great Recording. To me, it was Gabby's best.
I miss watching "Joe Gang" play his stand-up bass like one guitar.
I love traveling @ 33 rpm in this iPod world...Awwwrrrite.

Do you know the name of this TV special or if there's a way to get a hold of it? Thanks! :)

Ok thanks! I'll probably look into it. There used to be youtube videos of him jamming, maybe from this same TV special, but they were taken down..
