Can't thank you enough for your YLOD series. Followed along as best I could and got my 80GB breathing again. Haven't load tested it yet but at least I can log in. Awesome jig video and the foil tip was great. It is.... ALIIIIIIIVVVE! Even if it doesn't last the fact that it's up and running again is pretty cool. Nice little side project. Kudos to your insight, knowledge and experience. Cheers!
Great videos, should be more people like you! I followed your videos but When i turned My ps3 on it shows all this wierd colors.. Like it has added a layer of blue on top of everything, any ideas what that might be?
Grrrr, I am in such a dilemma - some tutorials plead to not use heat gun for reflow and some state the complete opposite, I just can't decide which way to bake / cook the innards of my dead PS3
I just want to thank you. Your instructions were very concise and detailed. I hope in the future you will have instruction videos for other products, like the Xbox. I spent a total of: $20.00 between tools and thermal compound. I bought the heat gun at HomeDepot and was able to return it with the receipt after I used it.
From your experience, do you know how long this fix will last before it fails again? Has it failed on you since your instruction video? Thanks again. Spanktony
@AronStone327 you just probably needed to clean the fan, but since you got the YLOD, you need to see if the Sodering will help, and if it doesnt, its probably the power sorce, or a power failure.
Is it possible that this can be a permanent fix? Any chance? I already paid sony $100 to fix my ps3 once 6 months ago and now only 3 months after the warranty runs out its broken again. it sucks man as soon as I can Im going to buy a slim.
@djwhetzel , i did everything you instructed and when i plugged it in i did not even get a red light. i proceeded to take it apart and restart. i still got nothing from it. any ideas?
@carlb86 Ok, so I got the system working and backed everything up. The one problem is that the wifi/ethernet is dead. I think I got something on the motherboard too hot.
Actually I got a question for u guys: my ps3 has never had this problem yet. It's a few years old. 40gig model. I don't use it loads but in the last year the fan has been on full blast almost within the first 10 mins of turning it on. Would a simple strip down and full clean with a fresh sliver of thermal paste help a lot? Or is it an issue which tends to happen no matter what?
Nice tip using foil to block the rest of the board! Also, at first when I saw that flux I thought it was acid flux. But when you said 'no clean' I thought, phew! Flux is also a good idea as usually when it starts make a sizzling noise. It's usually when the solder's starting to melt. However, I'm not sure if that's still the case with using a heat gun and not an iron.
Thanks a bunch for your videos. I found your video about a year ago when my PS3 broke the first time, and I just finished fixing it the 2nd time. I didn't catch the first time that this is just a temp fix. I didn't see this video until after I fixed the PS3 a little bit ago. I'm gonna build the motherboard jig and buy some of that flux stuff to prepare for the 3rd, 4th...fix.
How did you learn of this fix? Again, thanks much for saving me a bunch of cash.
I fixed my YLOD last week, thanks! Since then I've mainly just watched dvds and videos on the PS3, no problem there. I'm starting to play games again, and now it's crashing frequently. Is that a hardware problem? I've heard it's more common lately so it may have something to do with the latest firmware?
How should i spread arctic sliver 5??? I used the credit card method to spread, putting the compound in a line, and now a month later my PS3 is dead again.... Can anyone help me out?
i don't suppose you can make a video showing how to replace the solder (re-ball I believe you called it) because I went and bought a soldering kid in hopes to make a permanent fix... but I've never soldered in my life hahaha. Thanks
@alexcsere use a paper towel or rag or just about anything really to wipe it off though try not to get it on the board if u do don't panic just wipe it off there to then once u scrape all the old stuff off use some qtips dipped in rubbing alcohol to "polish" it from there
I just followed everything step by step and now nothing is happening. NO red light or power I guess....Could you think if anything I may have done incorrectly? Thank You

I went and got the stuff, borrowed my friends heat gun and got to work. 4 hours later, my 4 year old "fat boy"(original 1st Gen model) is up and running again. I suspect my fan is probly to blame because it became very hot almost a min after power up. so ill look into upgrades. but for now....GAME ON!!! Thank you Sir!

Ive had PS3 since it came out and its been fine until recently it took a dump and wont work anymore im too scared to take it apart lol so i have to pay a 100$ to get it fixed :( thanks for the video anyway i almost tried it
Hey I did this and my ps3 works now, but my fan now runs an mach 5 which it hasent done before in the 4 years iv had it. and my controllers and internet won't connect and i know i attached the ribbon cable for the wifi/blue tooth antenna
Also that last part about using the aluminum foil aren't I supposed to heat the entire motherboard and the reverse side like in your other videos? Or I'm only supposed to heat up the CPU/GPU?
hey man it works!! i did it!! great stuff!! only one problem now .... I cant connect to internet now?? wireless or directly wired?? any ideas on what may have went wrong?? thanx ashknot13 a.k.a. jesswess
@djwhetzel i did this used a heat gun from home depot the ht1000 $22 heated up the gpu and the cpu for 30 sec each at 750 degrees in a circle motion . applied arctic silver 5 from radio shack for $10 a very thin even coat and cleaned off the access build up on the sides . then right away reinstalled all the components . it worked!!! but couldnt get on line ? also my control doesnt sync up wirelessly with the ps3 whats going on???
I will be getting some of the liquid flux in case I need to do this again. I got 3 years from my 1st Gen 60 GB PS3 before the YLOD. I used the thermal compound you recommended and did the foil trick. Reassembled everything and took 2 or 3 tries to get the bluetooth/networking going again (ribbon cable mess :)) but it is working and VERY quiet.
I hope to get more than 3-4 months out of this, but if not, I know how to disassemble this now. EXCELLENT video series!
@jamcrae100 Yes, I did with no problems. Just be careful doing so. I used it to get it off, then kept rubbing it down until no more residues showed on my napkin.
@dlpurez Like I said in the video, the oven reflow method is just a bad idea all around.
And like I also said in the video, just wait until you have the correct supplies and do it right the first time. If you destroy it you will not have a second time to try to fix it.
hey man if i did everything right it should work. my ps3 does not have a disc drive or a hardrive. i did everything you said and it did work. it turned on and told me it didnt have a hardrive then shut off. when i turned it back on it had yellow light of death again. any ideas? happen to you? let me know please.
Thank you SOOO MUCH!!! I just got mine fixed and it worked! :D I wish I can donate but I'm only 15 :\ ahah.... And I finally got my Streetfighter 4 game out of the PS3 wheww!* THANK YOU! :D
i did exactly how u showed how to fix da ylod and the fix was successful but now... it freezes in da middle of da game over nd over again... would u happen to know how to fix dat? or wat i did wrong?
guys if ur disk is stuck in ps3 even if u have ylod problem, turn power off on back hold down the eject button and turn power back on, may take 5seconds or so of holding it after u turn the main power back on.
is there a way to permanently reflow? i know its a stupid question because you would obviosly have told us how. but i got to thinking how sony does it (assuming that their repair actually does permanently fixes the problem) or how some xbox360 owners have claimed to have done(to them it seems so far) here is a link i saw how a guy "permently fixed his rrod for his 360. What are thoughts? ty very much in advance.
@jonapostol he said it in the video. you need to completely remove cpu/gpu and re-solder the connections. seems like a more serious job, though. if you get it fixed locally (check craigslist) you could prob ask them to do it for you.
hey i have fixed my ps3 a few times now and i notice that everytime i get the ylod i disassemble it and i notice on the cpu n gpu that the compound looks like its dried up in some places exposing the cpu and gpu am i doing something wrong? should i use the flux and see if it would help that problem?
i notice that everytime i fix my ps3 i still get the ylod and when i open it i notice that some of the compound had dried up and some of the processors are reveal any tips?
lol, my friend bought a Ps3 off of ebay, i told him to, and when he got it, it had the YLOD, after crying, he called me and told me the problem, you video help me fix it for him, and now he enjoys it. He sold his Xbox!
Great series, but it would be nice if you could state the exact temp to are heating the cpu to. My heat gun does 1400f but no less so I was a little worried about over heating. I used a IR laser to check the temps of the cpu but would be nice if you stated what temp is optimum. Fix worked though, so thanks for that.
i know you have already made a bunch of videos but i think u shood make a vid about how to put lead solder. its cool if u would but i understand if ur buisy.
i know you have already made a bunch of videos but i think u shood make a vid about how to put lead solder. its cool if u would but i understand if ur buisy.
thanks for the vid man! followed it step by step an me puss3 is purring again. When it first fell victim to the ylod i had a game in the drive. I opened up the ps3 and the drive and removed it. Now that its fixed it wont allow me to insert discs. Any ideas?
just wondering - the thing with the foil, is that to be used throughout the whole process with the heat gun? are you saying you dont need to heat anything other than the cpu and gpu? thanks!
@djwhetzel. Just wanted to say your video's are all excellent. You shouldn't feel like you have to apologize for anything. You are doing the viewers a favor. Your video's are very detailed, couldn't be easier to follow and have helped a ton of people get their systems going again. Plus you have made it known, which very few people do, that a reflow is not a permenant fix. Thank you for putting in the time to help!
dont have any thing important that i need to keep on my ps3 harddrive so i dont care much for memory loss. i need your opinion on this. give me advice. (i know in responsible for my own actions.) what if i were to buy a used 60 gb ps3 from gamestop. they offer a 1 year warranty for their used systems. if i get a yellow light in less than a year they have to replace it and if not than the system is good for a good while
Great idea to use aluminum foil. Just wanted to add that if you put it shiny/mirror side up, it will reflect the heat better. Also a question, how do you know when it's hot enough? Can you see the solder get fluid or is it guessing? Thanks for the videos..
Hi. I have recently gotten the YLOD but I fixed it using these videos. They helped a lot! But now I have the YLOD again. It has been 3 days since i last fixed it. I used a decent heat gun at 750 degrees and Dynex thermal compound. My playstation has been used a large amount of time since it was last fixed. Could this short interval between yellow lights just be some bad luck? Or could I have fixed it wrong? Would it just be easier to send it in to sony or even buy a new one?

awsome step by step sir, thankyou, had to repair my ps3 twice now and lasted 4mths the 1st time & just did it again tonight..... an hour of my time & a heat gun is better than $300 for a new ps3, thanks again.
Also, can I use rubbing alcohol instead of flux? Like will it be better than nothing? But no clean flux is better than rubbing alcohol? Or it is bad to use rubbing alcohol for the process ?
@computerbux I'm using an Epson Home Cinema 8100 projector displaying on an 84" screen (I want a bigger screen, but my room size won't allow it), Sony STR-DA333ES A/V receiver (which desperately needs upgraded), Paradigm speakers (including sub), various different players (WDTV Live Plus, DVD, Laser Disc, etc) and of course a PS3 and Xbox 360.
Hello thanks for the very helpfull video's!I do not recommend the aluminum foil because it was molten to the protective layer on my motherboard it wil probably short circuit my board now!!i let you know if it does when i reassembled my ps3
I performed your compound change and clean fix and it worked again, for one day. It was a great feeling when it powered up and awesome satisfaction having fixed it without paying through the teeth. There is a permanent fix? Please show us
If you can please make a video about how to re-ball the cpu, because I am tired of opening up my ps3 and having to go out and buy some more thermal compound-
@Tygkudde In the other video I pre-heated the entire board to try to prevent warping. If you use a jig like I made in tip #1 then you won't have to pre-heat the board. Actually, you don't have to pre-heat it at all, but the board may warp a lot more when you do focus heat on the processors.
im tryin to fix mmy ps3 right now. add me on psn SourAyy , i see yu have uncharted 2 and i love thattt game , only game i play. its actually stuck in my system as of right now
@djwhetzel Awesome because I didn't on my fix earlier today. Worked out pretty well so far, hopefully it'll last me a bit. Gonna learn about the "permanent fix" but that's some fairly complex stuff for me to learn so I'll be taking my time.
@DigitalArtsSociety The only permanent fix that I know of is what I mentioned in the video. A reball.
Reballing is a very tricky procedure though and requires some special tools. I have everything to do it, but I'm not sure I want to make a video on the process because it is so involving.
how big is the tv?
xXRETZZXx 1 day ago
@xXRETZZXx It's a projector.
It's only 84 inches, but I physically can't go any bigger in this small apartment that I'm in.
Once I get into a bigger place, I'll probably get a 110 or 120 inch screen.
It looks kind of washed out because all of the lights are on, but it looks amazing with the lights off.

Also that last part about using the aluminum foil aren't I supposed to heat the entire motherboard and the reverse side like in your other videos? Or I'm only supposed to heat up the CPU/GPU?
AgentCell 1 year ago
is this liquid flux applied after you clean the processors with the rubbing alcohol?
AgentCell 1 year ago
I just have a question. What is the purpose of using the heat gun? Why heat the motherboard? I'm just curious to know.

thanks for the fix, came in very handy. my dead ps3 is now up and running and reformatting as I type.

MMAParent 1 year ago
Can you use rubbing alcohol to take the thermal compound off the CPU and gpu?
jamcrae100 1 year ago
@jamcrae100 Yes, I did with no problems. Just be careful doing so. I used it to get it off, then kept rubbing it down until no more residues showed on my napkin.
MMAParent 1 year ago
I have a question, can you use the foil in the oven?
dlpurez 1 year ago
@dlpurez Like I said in the video, the oven reflow method is just a bad idea all around.
And like I also said in the video, just wait until you have the correct supplies and do it right the first time. If you destroy it you will not have a second time to try to fix it.
Thanks for watching.

guys if ur disk is stuck in ps3 even if u have ylod problem, turn power off on back hold down the eject button and turn power back on, may take 5seconds or so of holding it after u turn the main power back on.

is there a way to permanently reflow? i know its a stupid question because you would obviosly have told us how. but i got to thinking how sony does it (assuming that their repair actually does permanently fixes the problem) or how some xbox360 owners have claimed to have done(to them it seems so far) here is a link i saw how a guy "permently fixed his rrod for his 360. What are thoughts? ty very much in advance.
jonapostol 1 year ago
@jonapostol he said it in the video. you need to completely remove cpu/gpu and re-solder the connections. seems like a more serious job, though. if you get it fixed locally (check craigslist) you could prob ask them to do it for you.

@jonapostol re-balling. :P

hey i have fixed my ps3 a few times now and i notice that everytime i get the ylod i disassemble it and i notice on the cpu n gpu that the compound looks like its dried up in some places exposing the cpu and gpu am i doing something wrong? should i use the flux and see if it would help that problem?

i notice that everytime i fix my ps3 i still get the ylod and when i open it i notice that some of the compound had dried up and some of the processors are reveal any tips?

lol, my friend bought a Ps3 off of ebay, i told him to, and when he got it, it had the YLOD, after crying, he called me and told me the problem, you video help me fix it for him, and now he enjoys it.

Shit temporary, fuck me it would only last me a week, is there anyway to make it last for a good year?

hi thanks for the videos, they are great :)
just wondering - the thing with the foil, is that to be used throughout the whole process with the heat gun? are you saying you dont need to heat anything other than the cpu and gpu? thanks!

Don't have a heat gun ........ or that magical paste shit.

Also, can I use rubbing alcohol instead of flux? Like will it be better than nothing? But no clean flux is better than rubbing alcohol? Or it is bad to use rubbing alcohol for the process ?
A reply is greatly appreciated.

What kind of setup do you have for your gaming system. (screen, speakers, projector, etc)
computerbux 1 year ago
@computerbux I'm using an Epson Home Cinema 8100 projector displaying on an 84" screen (I want a bigger screen, but my room size won't allow it), Sony STR-DA333ES A/V receiver (which desperately needs upgraded), Paradigm speakers (including sub), various different players (WDTV Live Plus, DVD, Laser Disc, etc) and of course a PS3 and Xbox 360.
djwhetzel 1 year ago
@computerbux The projector looks MUCH better with the lights off. Projectors are really meant to be used in a dark room.

Why did you heat up the whole board in your other video? Why not just the cpu/gpu?
Thanks
Tygkudde 1 year ago
@Tygkudde In the other video I pre-heated the entire board to try to prevent warping. If you use a jig like I made in tip #1 then you won't have to pre-heat the board. Actually, you don't have to pre-heat it at all, but the board may warp a lot more when you do focus heat on the processors.
djwhetzel 1 year ago
@djwhetzel Okey. Thanks btw. I fixed my ps3 just an hour ago.

bkzsoldja24 1 year ago
With the Aluminum foil wrap, should we still heat up both sides of the board then wrap it and then heat the cpu/gpu?
Lookthatasianguy 1 year ago
@Lookthatasianguy Nope. If you use aluminum foil you shouldn't need to heat both sides.
djwhetzel 1 year ago
@djwhetzel Awesome because I didn't on my fix earlier today. Worked out pretty well so far, hopefully it'll last me a bit. Gonna learn about the "permanent fix" but that's some fairly complex stuff for me to learn so I'll be taking my time.
Lookthatasianguy 1 year ago
is there a permanent fix yet?
Ive fixed mine 100 times and im tired
DigitalArtsSociety 1 year ago
@DigitalArtsSociety The only permanent fix that I know of is what I mentioned in the video. A reball.
Reballing is a very tricky procedure though and requires some special tools. I have everything to do it, but I'm not sure I want to make a video on the process because it is so involving.
