i love coleen sexton very much, her voice is wonderful. but i have to say i like Idina better as elfie and christen chenoweth better as glenda. ... just my opinion but still bravo..
@jaszon27 Victoria's Elphaba was by far the weakest performance I have seen in the role. Vocals were all over the place and I wasn't able to connect with her acting at all. Also, she was paired with Christina DeCicco, who is the weakest Glinda I have seen (I like her in other shows...just not Wicked).
Coleen Sexton is my second cousin. Altough ive never met her shes doing what i dream of doing one day. if u think im lying u can ask me . like i said i never met her but shes my dads cousin and my step mom and cousins went to see wicked a couple years ago and it was a night she was playing elphaba uhmm i think i spelled that wrong. lol

I loved both actresses, but I hate the quality of the video. The audio and video are clear, but this one and the Kristy Cates videos have this sort of "dark" quality to them, if you know what I mean. It's sort of vague. Do you know what I mean?
the only way I'll ever see this piece o crap musical again is if COLEEN is playing that witch. she RULES. This music is like a nap on the beach for her after singing 2 years of Wildhorn's Lucy, the most difficult role ever written for a belter. Puh-lease. Coleen rocks this crappy role and makes the crappy song sound like nobody's ever sung it before her.
@in2whitwhitwhit Wicked is one of the best musicals ever...Please go take an English class, then take a music class to know what the fuck you're talking about.
don't get me wrong, i LOVE Wildhorn's Jekyll and Hyde but the part of Lucy isn't exactly challenging. vocally or emotionally, and it's nowhere near as iconic as this role. and i know for a fact that he role of Elphaba is far more challenging from a technical point of view as it has a much wider range and less breath-breaks.
@in2whitwhitwhit that stuff i said in the last message about being technically harder is pretty much indisputable (unless you're an idiot) but from a personal point of view, i don't think Coleen was anything special in J&H and she isn't the best Elphaba. i mean, she's okaaay but she cracks horribly on that final note.
Coleen is a beautiful and talented woman, but she isn't up there with Ruthie Henshall or Bernadette Peters or any of the other great leading ladies in musical theatre.

@RedKingCommandz Personally, I thought Coleen was brilliant in Jekyll and Hyde and is vastly underrated in Wicked. She sounds absolutely fantastic and is far stronger than some more well known Elphabas. As for the crack on the last note, I actually find it amazing that she pulled through it and still ended the song well - most people would break and have to stop, breathe, and restart. Coleen manages to pull through it and sounds fantastic afterwords - an extremely difficult task.

i can't get to the fact that the wizard is the bad guy here. which the timeless classic got a twist to the bizarre. love the songs but it's like making superman the villain and lex luthor the good guy.
@archangelcats Well in the show here he and Elphie are about on the same level. Not very good but not very bad either. They're both worse in the books though. In his case he's possibly the greatest conartist in Oz. Like the Emerald City isn't even green, he makes everyone wear special tinted glasses to make everything look green just to make it SEEM more magical just to show how "magical" he is even though he's a complete fake. We know something bad happened between him and the witch cause he
@archangelcats *continued* tells all four members of the group "All I ask is KILL HER" to which, I think Scarecrow brought up "Didn't you already ask someone else to do that?" to which he replied "I don't care who kills her, I just want her dead." and then comes up with a story for what she did, but then later that gets debunked so we really don't know what happened. If memory serves me right. He's not a nice man, but I wouldn't say he's a bad guy either. Perhaps its just me though. |D;;
I don't get what people are griping about. Sounds like all the notes are there to me. She's got some good technique and hit the money notes at the end. I never worried for her once. Good job.
I'm sorry but I do not understand how anyone can like this woman. She was awful as Lucy and she was awful as Elphaba. Her voice is high, nasaly and annoying. She screeches when hitting the higher/longer notes and it's just bad. I mean if this your cup of tea cool but I can't stand her and I kinda wish she'd just go away.
I wish there were cast recordings of each cast. It may be the same songs, but each actor/actress puts their own style into their character so some songs give off different vibes according to who's singing it.
Ok so I saw a video of her in jekyll and Hyde and was not impressed BUT this I am very much impressed!! Strong vocal notes with passion and not screaming.. Totally in her range and completely made it get owns.. In a very very good way!! I give credit where credit is due and this is a great performance from her!!!
I HATE HATE HATE it when there is a really good Elphaba who puts all her heart and soul into this song and morons say on EVERY video "No one can top Idina because she was the original" FFS everyone has favourite Elphabas and some of them are brilliant and you are NOT giving them any credit! How about lay off the whole Idina competition and praise these actors for once instead of bringing them down all the time?! Coleen is excellent so stop marking her performance in comparison to Idina's!!
I still like idina menzel better! Coleen was great in Jekyll and Hyde but I am a HUGE wicked fan and I don't really like what she did with the song she cuts off some long phrases that sound amazing when you hold them out and I think Katie Rose Clark is the best glinda ever!!!
@NekoGirlsLOVE I saw Katie Rose Clark when I saw Wicked and I found her so annoying and I love Colleen's voice for Elphaba... funny how we have opposite views. :)
SHe is amazing, i loved her in jekyll and hyde. But also i have to say Alexia Khadmie is an unbeliveable elphaba! I saw her live in the west end and she was truly sensational!
it's the acting skills of idina that spelled the difference since then.. i agree that a lot of them(different elphaba) can surpass the voice of idina menzel because even in my opinion, her vocals is not as powerful as hers (collen sexton) and other elphaba's out there.. Idina's strength is her acting ability, that's it.. *grin* :P
Its From The Rock Version Of Defying Gravity By Kerry Ellis Type it in on google Rock Version Defying Gravity By Kerry Ellis and it should pop up its really good!
She's wonderful! I really like the way Coleen stylized the song with vibratto and riffs, and I also really like that she doesn't really belt her head off. It sounds stunning and she has really unique riffs for the last three lines.
Idina Menzel is the best Elphaba :) coleen did a great job this song is very hard to sing, i didnt mean to sound mean in my other comment... i just love idina kristen as a pair, thre my favorites but colleen does a very good job in jekyll and hyde, she did well here to :)
haha are you joking? idina is awful, shes so inconsistent. she'll have like 5 good shows but then like 10 bad ones, and then the standby goes on for like 2 cause she has to go on vocal rest cause she blows her voice.
Idina Idina Idina... blah! I mean, yeah Idina's great, but she's not the definitive Elphaba... Have a listen to some others, like Eden Espinosa, Patrice Tipoki or Willemijn Verkaik... Amazing!
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Oh Willemijn puts almost every Elphaba to shame....She has so much power and spot on vocals that it just shouldn't be legal!! Her No Good Deed (Gutes Tun) gives me chills
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
the reason why she was a standby is because idina menzel is the elphaba... she is was and always will be elphaba... her shoes are extremly hard to fill. and im sorry but colleen sexton did not fill them very well. sorry but im a idina fan:) not say colleen isnt good... because she is an extrordinary preformer... specially in jekkyl and hyde... but not as good there either.
indinas shoes r extremly hard to fill in this show and coleen did a wonderful job!! her and one other girl whos name i cant remember are the only people i think fit the character of elphie.(besides indina). why she was a standby i will never know.
i agree with you totally.. why she was a stand-by, well i will never in my life understand that.. but thank god she was a stand-by in wicked when i saw it in columbus ohio, she was simply awesome.. i also saw her in jekyll and hyde in ny.. amazing is all i could ever say about that performance.. she should by no means ever be a stand-by.. someone dropped the ball on that one
She KILLS this song. Her riffs at the end - good Lord, she doesn't even seem like she's TRYING! SUCH a fan of hers. Definitely on the top of my list of Elphies.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
i've never heard coleen sing this before and i'm sorry but i don't think she can hold a candle to idina. coleen is FABULOUS in jekyll&hyde, but i think that idina is the original elphaba and no one can top her
@lisambofoh I really am not impressed by Idina, she was only first - her top was really nothing special - very little colour in her Ebs. She's a great singer, but certainly not the best it gets
@lisambofoh Agreed!!!! SJB, Donna Vivino, Coleen Sexton, Marcie Dodd, Jackie Burns, Eden Espinosa, Teal Wicks, Vicki Noon, Kerry Ellis plus many more are all better than Idina
The first time I heard this song with Idina, I thought she rocked, but as I hear the same song with Coleen and Eden I realize Idina is overrated. Don't get me wrong, please, I really like Idina and she will always be the original Elphaba, but vocally speaking Eden and Coleen are better. Idina is the best Maureen in Rent, but Eden is the best Elphaba and Coleen is really close to her.
I love Idina, but I agree...she's still my favorite, but others have done just as well as she, at least vocally.
I kind of disagree with Eden being the best vocally. Don't get me wrong, she's extremely talented, but I think others have done better than she did vocally.
I think Eden has a very good voice, although she can overact sometimes, maybe that's why she is not perfect. although as you say, she is really talented.
I love it too!! So unique!! I've never noticed her expression at 7:52 before, but she looks out and does a little cheeky smile and laugh!! It kinda reminds me of Saycon Sengbloh (who smiles during the 'bring me downs')- it almost suggests that they are really confident and have shown everyone in Oz that they are extremely powerful and are proud about this fact!!
she is INCREDIBLE! wow! i didn't think anybody could come close to my favorite elphie (teal wicks) but WOW!!! Coleen is a close second...maybe its a tie...lol (And for those of you who are like "its not a competition, stfu"...i know it's not a competition, but i'm allowed to think that somebody has more talent than another...it's perfectly normal and fair to do so)
I totally agree! If it's not Idina, then it's gotta be Coleen. Either that or Stephanie J. Block, she is incredible! I just hope it won't be an All-star cast with people who are only Hollywood famous rather than Broadway famous. The movie musicals with Hollywoods in them basically never have the raw vocal talent that these cast members have, and I would just die if I saw Wicked sink down to that level as a movie. It would break my heart =[
except that they released a statement saying that they weren't going to cast anyone who had been in the show before in the movie... probably because they know fans would be in an uproar if their favorite didn't get cast. this is all subject to change of course as the date of the actual release gets closer but i do know that as of now they are not considering anyone who has been in the show before.
Just saw her tonight. I loved her. She sounded a lot like Lucy from Jekyll and Hyde to me but hey she was my first!! Do you by any chance have an audio of her in J&H?
her "leap" very nearly made me turn it off, but i suppose it wasn't horrible. not my ideal Elphie (even though Dee IS Elphaba, Sho kicks ultimate Wicked-ass), but decent enough.
i love coleen sexton very much, her voice is wonderful. but i have to say i like Idina better as elfie and christen chenoweth better as glenda. ... just my opinion but still bravo..

I loved her as Lucy, I adore her as Elphaba. She's amazing.

I like her more as Elphaba
jonsmith3030 2 years ago
I'm a very hard Elphaba critic, and I must say that I really enjoyed this performance. She is quite good. I liked it, a lot!
dramastar1991 2 years ago 2
Idina Idina Idina... blah! I mean, yeah Idina's great, but she's not the definitive Elphaba... Have a listen to some others, like Eden Espinosa, Patrice Tipoki or Willemijn Verkaik... Amazing!

Oh Willemijn puts almost every Elphaba to shame....She has so much power and spot on vocals that it just shouldn't be legal!! Her No Good Deed (Gutes Tun) gives me chills

amen lol i love her, there are very few elphabas that im not fond of. i looove coleen tho

the reason why she was a standby is because idina menzel is the elphaba... she is was and always will be elphaba... her shoes are extremly hard to fill. and im sorry but colleen sexton did not fill them very well. sorry but im a idina fan:) not say colleen isnt good... because she is an extrordinary preformer... specially in jekkyl and hyde... but not as good there either.

indinas shoes r extremly hard to fill in this show and coleen did a wonderful job!! her and one other girl whos name i cant remember are the only people i think fit the character of elphie.(besides indina). why she was a standby i will never know.
julssg16 2 years ago 2
Was she Eden's standby?

Can someone explain to me WHY she was a standbye?
fondantcakes45 2 years ago 3
i agree with you totally.. why she was a stand-by, well i will never in my life understand that.. but thank god she was a stand-by in wicked when i saw it in columbus ohio, she was simply awesome.. i also saw her in jekyll and hyde in ny.. amazing is all i could ever say about that performance.. she should by no means ever be a stand-by.. someone dropped the ball on that one

i've never heard coleen sing this before and i'm sorry but i don't think she can hold a candle to idina. coleen is FABULOUS in jekyll&hyde, but i think that idina is the original elphaba and no one can top her
bwaygal 2 years ago
No one can top Idina? Most of them can. She was good and all, but a lot are better than her.
lisambofoh 2 years ago 38
@lisambofoh I really am not impressed by Idina, she was only first - her top was really nothing special - very little colour in her Ebs. She's a great singer, but certainly not the best it gets
Drelnis 1 year ago
@lisambofoh Agreed!!!! SJB, Donna Vivino, Coleen Sexton, Marcie Dodd, Jackie Burns, Eden Espinosa, Teal Wicks, Vicki Noon, Kerry Ellis plus many more are all better than Idina

yeah you can see it almost in every video, its all good!

GiselleKan 3 years ago 6
I totally agree with you!
epilot757 3 years ago
i saw Idina do this live in the pre Broadway run i though she was fantastic, then i saw Eden do it on the tour and i was like "Idina who?"
5660201 2 years ago 3
I love Idina, but I agree...she's still my favorite, but others have done just as well as she, at least vocally.
I kind of disagree with Eden being the best vocally. Don't get me wrong, she's extremely talented, but I think others have done better than she did vocally.
ElisaTompkin 2 years ago
I think Eden has a very good voice, although she can overact sometimes, maybe that's why she is not perfect. although as you say, she is really talented.
GiselleKan 2 years ago
I love her "From me". What does she do at 7:52
Imflyinghighdefying 3 years ago
I love it too!! So unique!! I've never noticed her expression at 7:52 before, but she looks out and does a little cheeky smile and laugh!! It kinda reminds me of Saycon Sengbloh (who smiles during the 'bring me downs')- it almost suggests that they are really confident and have shown everyone in Oz that they are extremely powerful and are proud about this fact!!

she is INCREDIBLE! wow! i didn't think anybody could come close to my favorite elphie (teal wicks) but WOW!!! Coleen is a close second...maybe its a tie...lol (And for those of you who are like "its not a competition, stfu"...i know it's not a competition, but i'm allowed to think that somebody has more talent than another...it's perfectly normal and fair to do so)
Simbafan 3 years ago
if idina menzel and kristin chenoweth end up not being casted in the movie version of this in 2010 she should DEFF!!! be elphaba in it!!
Kaylea1323 3 years ago 8
I totally agree! If it's not Idina, then it's gotta be Coleen. Either that or Stephanie J. Block, she is incredible! I just hope it won't be an All-star cast with people who are only Hollywood famous rather than Broadway famous. The movie musicals with Hollywoods in them basically never have the raw vocal talent that these cast members have, and I would just die if I saw Wicked sink down to that level as a movie. It would break my heart =[
RENTfanatic2011 3 years ago
except that they released a statement saying that they weren't going to cast anyone who had been in the show before in the movie... probably because they know fans would be in an uproar if their favorite didn't get cast. this is all subject to change of course as the date of the actual release gets closer but i do know that as of now they are not considering anyone who has been in the show before.

her "leap" very nearly made me turn it off, but i suppose it wasn't horrible. not my ideal Elphie (even though Dee IS Elphaba, Sho kicks ultimate Wicked-ass), but decent enough.
