This would be the third Tales games that's particularly good, the others being Symphonia 1 and Abyss. The only thing that Vesperia needed to be the best was a real villain, instead of just throwing one bad guy in for a few hours before they get killed or something and then throwing in another, over and over until the end of the game.
@Onlymaybe7 trust me it is good this is one of my favorite games for 360 and you will become a fan of the tales series and it is a bit hard to find depending on which game, when i bought this there were only 2 copies left, and if you do enjoy this game i recommend playing tales of the abyss on the ps2 and tales of symphonia on the gamecube
@lucas96180 Yes! I totally agreed. I beat this game in a week or so. I train hella. I thought this game was really good! Love the battle system and the story-line. Yes I already played "Tales of Symphonia" on teh gamecube. I wanted to play Abyss but that game is hard to find too. Just like Vesperia. I was lucky it was in store. Someone just traded it in and I called and reserve it right away. lol
@Onlymaybe7 Yeah, I can hardly ever find Tales games around where I live at all anymore, I had to order this one online. I dunno why, but even when it was new, I had trouble finding Dawn of the new world too, found it used though...
I came close to finishing TOS, then forgot it for a while. In that downtime, I started and finished Vesperia; I loved it. Going back to Symphonia now, I really couldn't reccomend it over this.
So heres my dilemma: I hear that the sequel to Symphonia is both vastly inferior to its predecessor and much more similar to Tales of Vesperia. Dare I take the gamble? Yes, I own a Wii. Would I like it despite its flaws?
@killifish2000 It's not an awful game, but ToS is way better. The story is all over the place, the original ToS characters are portrayed way differently (not only is Colette the only one to retain her original voice actor, but the characters don't have the same charm they used to), the new characters range from mediocre to just plain annoying, and the whole monster taming system is alright, but I wouldve been just fine without it. It's not a terrible game, its just not the sequel ToS deserved.
@tanarai Plus you do not get the option to play as any of your favorite characters from the first game. And they only accompany you for a while before leaving. (Though they do come back at the end,)
@IRONiHonakoo tos 2 was a disaster =P alright..it was average..but so lackluster.
tales of symphonia 1 is by far my favourite jrpg EVER ^^ vesperia is pretty damn good too, although raven recembled zelos a bit too much for me to prefer it more than tos
@tarkeke Zelos was by no means the first ladys man of the Tales series, and I like how Raven acts alot more then Zelos but that's just me I also love ToS 1
@IRONiHonakoo I think Zelos is the best tales character, so much depth and awesome dialoges =P but yeah raven was a good character, I was just a bit jarred by the strong recemblance that's all =(
zelos may not have been the first ladies man in the series, but the reason why the girls wanted him was different, that reason is what made him a great character imo
@tarkeke Well they don't really have much of a recemblance other then being a "ladies man" for one Zelos was popular with most of the ladies where Revan was not at all lol
SPOILER BELOW IF YOU HAVEN'T BEAT VESPERIA AND SYMPHONIA
@IRONiHonakoo zelos was just popular with the ladies because of his role as the chosen, it is revealed at some points in the game that he doesn''t really like it, raven is very popular in the guild town, and it is revealed that he actually dislikes it too =P
raven turned out to be a con-artist setting them up and the fact that he used a "mask" to cover up who he is similar too zelos who imo had a cooler motive, siding with the strongest
@tarkeke I know that Zelos did not really like it. I was just stating the fact that he was popular and raven was not. and keep in mind the motive for doing somthing is a major part of a character, i'm not saying who is cooler imo i'm just saying the characters are not all that much alike.
they are comparable, and that's what's kinda bothersome. and on some levels they are VERY similar, on others they differ, but in all honesty I literally spelled out what would happen with his character before it even happened, it's a bit of a shame considering that raven actually is a pretty cool character, I might just be picky about this, because I think things like that ruins the flow of the plot, which is otherwise pretty good, although a bit episodic for my taste
Looks great but I'm going to haver so much trouble remembering Yuri's name...I keep getting him confused wiyth Rita because Yuri somehow doesn't seem like a guy's name...I wonder why. Especialy not the type of guy Yuri seems to be.
Why is a console called "bad", just because it prefers a new kind of control over better graphics? I own a Wii and a Xbox 360 and I'm having lots of fun with both consoles.
Are you implying that the GC is bad? Everyone knows that GC is better than Wii that's for sure, but the GC was an amazing console. Next to the N64, Nintendo's best console, hands down.
@80sNMusic I disagree. I think the wii's inovative control scheme (while hard to get used to) put's it way above the gamecube. While my favorite console is still the nintendo 64, the wii is a close second.
@sirsniffy I totally agree. I wish I saw this comment sooner. ToS2 was a horrible abomination of a game. Boring battles, ANNOYING characters, mediocre voice acting, an obvious lack of polish and super low budget, only 1 anime cutscene and that cutscene is poorly animated, 90% of the time is spent doing filler tasks, the story is horrible aside from one twist... it was horrible. I've only played Symphonia and Legendia before it and I thought those were MILES better than the crap called ToS2.
no but there are things called "burst artes" that allow the character to tap into their hidden powers and unleashed a short but decently powerful attack.
Depends on who youre using for me in terms of combo's Guy>yuri>luke Luke jsut seems liek a heavy hitting type, though i have seen some pretty sick combos with him, but iv seen more impressive ones with guy and yuri.
For the most part you are correct, as I've played most games in the series. There are notable exceptions in the series, however. The biggest of which was Tales of the Abyss... that game had an above average story for any game, and the character development was phenomenal.
As far as the story goes, I might agree that it was overwritten, but overwritten is certainly better than underwritten, and that's definitely more than most games in the series can say. But to say it made no sense... I'm sorry, but it made perfect sense to me. But hey, to each their own.
As for the characters, to me it seemed the whole theme with the cast of Abyss was that at first glance they seemed to be the same generic jrpg characters we've seen a million times before, but they weren't...
...they all had their own little twists and flaws that clashed with their generic image in a crippling manner; Guy was your usual handsome and dashing swashbuckler until you find out he has a crippling case of gynophobia, Jade seemed to be your usual spectacle-wearing, magic-using intellect until you realize the guy is a complete and utter sociopath, and so on. The game essentially tricked you into thinking it would be generic, and I think that's what made it great. Just my opinion, though ^_^
the character development in this game is just...brilliant than any tales series,i mean seriously you can find an handful of likable main cast but in this one all of them including Karol is extreamly likable.
Very detailed, in depth review! They hit ALL of things future players NEED to know about this game to a tee. Very great game! Only thing wrong with this review is the fact that they didn't give it a 9! :)

oh, err, tales of the abyss
the story was the biggest load of noncoherent, overwritten twaddle ever seen in a jrpg.
It made absolutely no fucking sense, garbage.
Tales character designs are all pulled out of a big bag called 'fucking generic anime character stereotypes', take your pick. Abyss was garbage.
