Saw what must have been their 1st gig in London, Camden Music Machine (later Camden Palace)...in 1978 (?). They were so solid...we were knocked out! His performance here a cross between Johnny Rotten and Bowie..well that´s who I thought of at the time!

The intensity of the live version of it is BEAUTIFUL! "I'm in love with Frank Sinatra!" "I'm in love with DOING THE TWIST", "I'm in love with the SUPREMES"... So many great digs. Anyone notice that the UK version of the first album has a visual ref to the Velvet Underground? Interesting influences. Stooges, psychedelic bands, velvets, UK punk.. love 'em!
This band is in any book about music of that period all around the world. They are very famous and are certainly considered legend.what makes anyone think they werre unknown or ignored. They got on american radio in places .Not Rolling stones rich but I don't think were going for that in the late 70's early 80's. People post odd notions here.30 years later people are still talking about this band!
The more I watch these guys (saw them live three times in their heyday) the more I I think that they were, sonically, visually and lyrically one of the the greatest bands of a generation. it is a crime they are not considered legendary.
Very underated band indeed and should be held in higher esteem, top songs and stage presence I wish I could have watched them live. So many top bands from the 80s!
Yeah! I saw them twice in 1981. This brings back so many good memories! Richard Butler was such a charismatic performer. And Duncan KILLED it on the sax!! :-)
@ieatorbs Glad I don't see that tv show. Maybe you meant you play with yourself in front of the TV. Please ....if your gonna make a comment at least make it comprehensible to the rest of mankind. And keep your bigoted, juvenile, homophobic views to yourself.
You're welcome to 'Spank me later' mate. But I've a wife and two kids so I'd probably tear your head off before you got within a mile of me.
Let's do it! I will develop a You -Tubesite for earyt Furs tunes, shows and memorabilia. This band kicked ass with so much snarl and lyrical depth and chaos and rebellion and energy and pulse (great tune, by the way) that I am amazed they don't get the credit that The Pistols, Ramones, Buzzcocks and Joy Division get. Unbelievable!
i first wittnessed this band at the nashville london 78ish,next time at the music machine camdon town, someone chucked a glass at mr butler this made the whole performance even more intense what a night,we sleapt at euston sta,if u can call it sleep,3 4 a £1
Here's what I liked about this song-it was a perfect bridge between Roxy Music and the real 'new wave'. The saxophone is absolutely Andy Mackay, even down to the Enoesque treatments. But while Ferry was becoming soft and complacent around this time, Richard Butler was the snarling cynic we needed.
perfectly said if i may say so myself. the pinheads who are so quick to dismiss butler as a bowie imitator (although he's a great one to aspire to) dont get it. that not only denigrates one the most seminal and underrated postpunk groups to come out of england or anywhere for that matter, but it just might keeep this generation from enjoying just a balls out genius in the psych furs. by the way, i was fortunate enough to have caught them on their 1st tour at a little club called tuts in chicago.
I was impressed with how the Furs smoked cigarettes during their shows. I remember one of the guitarists had some sort of cigarette holder on his guitar.
I saw the Furs in September 1981 in College Park, Maryland. Talk Talk Talk had just came out. They played everything from both LPs, ran out of material, and played a few songs twice. A fantastic show. My girlfriend and I were dancing right in front of the amps.
I saw them, same tour, Kansas City in july (maybe june) '81. They were fantastic and played what seems to have been the entirety of both albums. It remains one of the best shows I've ever seen. Incredible lighting with simple white spots silhouetting each band member from behind, while slides were projected over them from both sides of the stage. I really miss that band - especially with that original line up.
I'm in love with fools like you!

The Furs get compared to Bowie so much, probably due to Richards looks but to me this sounds a LOT like early Hawkwind

Love both Bowie and Rotten but Butler, at this particular moment in time, had his own ´thing` going on.
And the voice! What a voice!!!
