Just a couple of points: Burj Al Arab is a fantastic hotel, beautiful rooms and a fantastic setting. The Ritz in London AND Paris are nowhere near as plush, the London one is particularly shit. We live here in Dubai. Yes it CAN be expensive to visit, it can also be inexpensive to visit. It depends what you want to spend as Dubai is one of the places in the world that caters for excess and more excess. That said, it is a beautifull city and one of the safest in the world. The reason that Dubai is doing all of this, making monuments and highly expensive buildings, is of course tourist attraction. WHY? Dubai is running out of oil and projected to run out i think 2016 so therefore they are trying to build a grand city so that later it can run on tourist money not on oil.
