The F-16 has set an example for other - much later- aircraft designs. Such as for the French Rafale. The F-16 at the time of its first production was way ahead of all other jetfighter developments in the world.
Regarding Russian designs: all Russian and Chinese aircraft are for at least 75% stolen copies of existing western (mainly american) aircraft....
@simeon5541 I think if the serbians had F16's and Nato used Mig29 we'd get the same kind of result. I think the difference here is not so much that the F16 is greatly superior, but that Nato (and US) airforce is more numerous, better trained and better maintained. That's the reason why F16 has fared better than Mig29's in the history of operations. If India and Pakistan went to war we'd probably see things be much more on a par.
Still, F16 is a great plane, stood the test of time.

@mig21lover Against the Germans in air excercises the E/F block is downing Mig-29's with no issue at all in dogfights. I suggest you look up some of the air to air camera action showing the F-16 owning the Mig-29 repeadetly.

@265justy The MiG-29 is a multirole front line fighter, it is a counter of the US F-16 and F-18. The Su-27 is to counter the F-15. Also the MiG-29 is state of the art, in fact US pilots acknowledged that it was training that made the difference, thus it was all to the pilots themselves rather than the jets. So please be more specific, if a MiG-29 shoots down several Raptors flown by first graders for example, would you say the MiG is a raptor killer and the Raptors are shit buckets?

A Raptor will blow a Mig 29 away befoe it even knows its there. F15 & F16 pilots find the Raptor untouchable in Red Flag exercises. So a Mig 29 or SU27 dont stand a chance.
@265justy My point was that the pilot matters, and here it is not about my age or yours, it is about what is stated. MiG-29 and Su-27 have had a good long service amongst many nations including my country and earned a great deal of respect, but they are old and need replacements. Currently MiG-29s in Eastern Europe are being upgraded to MiG-35s, to which planes like F-16 and F-18 are considered inferior. The Raptor has a competitor of its own - the Russian PAK FA which is about to enter service.
@zaho87 That PAK FA aint going to be in service yet for a long time mate. Its only in prototype stages & testing sence last April. It will be 10 years or more before it enters service and it looks like a YF23 copy. Ye might respect the Russian Mig 29 ,but there is a lot of eastern European nations starting to look to the West to replace there ageing Migs with F16s and Grippens.

Should I also indicate that the F-22 Raptor is a threat to small nations alone, all 130 Raptors so far are of little concern to Russia or China. And we are modernizing our airforces in Eastern Europe, which means that we are looking for modern equipment, not newly made old F-16s, only Poland has purchased some so far.
@265justy You can see the purchase orders by some other governments for upgrades to their MiGs, as well new ones being delivered. Russia has weapons contracts with many countries in Europe. Actually the days of the F-16 can be considered as over, since it is not capable of competing any newer aircraft, while MiG-29s can be upgraded to generation 4++ MiG-35s, same applies for many other Russian built jets. The Grippen is nice too, but this doesn't put the MiGs out of commission yet.

If any aircraft entusast or pilot wants to compare a fighter to another,they always seem to compare to the F16 to the fighter of choice. Its like the F16 is the plane to beat! Most F16s may be almost 20 to 25 years old but the F16 is still one of the greatest fighterjets of all time. Its a great dogfighter with lots of air to air kills WITHOUT LOSS & a good multirole platform.
@265justy F-16s do have losses, in dogfights and by AA weapon platforms. The F-15 and Su-27 are the ONLY two aircraft in the who saw action and did not have any losses. The F-16 is not a fighter of choice, however it presents the largest percentage of aircraft serving NATO and their allies. It is common for NATO pilots to compare to it, the Russians do the same for their MiGs. A friendly advice is to read something before saying anything, the WITHOUT LOSS statement was silly.
@zaho87 I will have to agree that the F16 isn't one of the top fighters esp. if you get caught up in a twisting turning dog fight even with a MIG 29 with a good pilot you'l be looking for a way out,and with a Su 27 or a 30 your in big trouble. Actualy during the Veitnam war there was a MIG 17 pilot who took out 10 F4s ,just skill ,guts and guns and no AA missiles.

Isreal claims never to have lost a single F16 in its war with Syria in the 80s,but claimed over 40 Mig kills for its F16s. Pakistan claims to have lost a single F16 in an owngoal,but claimed 7 kills .The USAF never lost an F16 in aircombat & have claimed a Serbian Mig29, 2 Iraqi Mig23s & an Iraqi Mig25. A Dutch F16 also has a Serbian Mig29 kill.
@265justy Then there is a loss, and you admit it yourself. There is a difference between no losses and losses by AA weaponry, just because there were no losses in areal combat doesn't mean that there weren't any. You should also check a variety of sources in order to get a clear picture. You should also know that USA may hardly admit any losses of its own aircraft, deeming the side claiming them as false. This was done in many occasions in order to project some sort of invincibility to people.
@zaho87 You should also know that the Russians will always try and claim kills for the planes they manufacture to promote sales ot there aircraft and not give them the bad name they already have. Look up ACIG.ORG. Its a great website and well worth the look at. Anyway kills or no kills, the F16 is still a great fighter and better than the Mig 29. The Mig29 was produced cause the Russians shitted themselfs when they saw the F16s capabilitys.
@265justy Also I checked some stuff as well, a Pakistani F-16 was downed by an Indian jet during the 1980s, however, the type of the aircraft is unknown because India denies participation in the event. Serbia claims a gun kill of an F-16 by a MiG-29, however, US sources neither deny or acknowledge it. Greece claims an F-16 kill from Turkey, however, the Turkish air force claims the opposite. In overall, 7 nations claim kills of F-16s in a dogfight.

Mig25 dosen`t need to be maneuvrable. It`s an interceptor, not a fighter. Those "poor avionics" were the best avionics available at the time and I`m pretty sure that the F15`s airframe would not be able to resist at Mach 3 either so think think before saying something as stupid as that. Mig25 was not made to counter F15. If you want to compare the F15 with a russian fighter, compare it to the Su27 or Su30

Well I love the Viper. In all honesty though it comes to pilot training in some cases like German Mig-29 vs. F-16 it would be the same outcome if the planes were traded German pilot win. Truthfully the Mig-29 is faster and more manueverable b/c it was made to counter F-16s and 15s. But the Viper gives you more bang for your buck across the bored being a superior multi-role frame that Mig-29 users wish the fulcrum could do.

There is a report in which a German pilot was able to get a lock on an f16 (the Block 50 version) 11 times before even the F16 got a missile lock.
The highest attack angle the F16 can reach is 25 degrees. Mig29 can go as high as 45 degrees while Mig29`s with vectored thrust can go as high as 120 degrees
And Mig29 beats F16 in BVR too becuase it has higher thrust/weight ratio and lower wing loading

PROVEN IN AIR FORCES MONTLY MAG. 2- Speed dont mean nothing in the dogfight. Eg. Subsonic Mig 17s vs F4s & F105s in Vietnam & Harriers vs Mirages in the Falklands. 3- F16 as manoverable if not better at all speeds and more manoverable with full weapons load. 9G+. 4 -Ive seen F16s fiy higher angles of attack at airshows & its not a MUST HAVE MANOVER ANYWAY.

As soon as the Migs fuel goes low they have to run from the dogfight giving its opponent such as an F16 the perfect chance to give chase and shot it down & the F16 has a topspeed of Mach 2.2 or 1500MPH which is still very fast and is enough for any fighter. All the modern fighters like Typhoon,Rafale only hit Mach 2+ anyway.
i`m not making excuses. That`s the truth. They lacked over 10 years of maintenance and were completely stripped of spare parts. They could barely fly and they were far from being combat ready. And f16 IS NOT MACH 2,2 CLASS. It barely reaches Mach 2. Mig29 don`t run out of fuel that easily though and F16 don`t carry much fuel too. F16`s combat radius is not much bigger than Mig29 plus dogfights last only a few minutes. mig29 has enough fuel to go in, kill the F16 and get back to base
By the way It`s not MIG`s (in plural). It`s MIG because only 1 Mig29 was lost due to enemy fire (which was downed by an AIM-120C, If I`m right). Just read my reply below

No, that`s not unfair at all. Unfair is using an F16 against an Mig21. All Mig29`s come with HMD, it`s an essential feature. Should we get remove of the second engine and IRST sensor too, just to make it a fair match for the F16 maybe?

HMD does not compensate the lack of a second engine or the 25 degrees AOA limitation and more important it will not make the F16 more maneuvrable then it already is

The USSR was way ahead of the USA in stealth technology in the 60`s-70`s but eventually they realised that stealth compormises aerodynamic performance and gave up. All the research was declassified and later translated in english. Both B2 and F117 were designed upon Petr Ufimtsev work. If it wasn`t for him (a russian) you would not have stealth aircraft at all
When the F-117 came out it had very, very poor aerodynamic characteristics, even worse than those of 2nd gen. aircraft. For the Russians a similar compomise in aerodynamic performance was NOT acceptable, but now technology has evolved and stealth aircraft have much better aerodynamic performance

During the war, an American B-29 had to make an emergency landing in far east Russia. The Russians gave us our aircrew back, but kept the B-29. Then the Tu-4 showed up, an exact copy of the B-29.

@simeon5541 I think if the serbians had F16's and Nato used Mig29 we'd get the same kind of result. I think the difference here is not so much that the F16 is greatly superior, but that Nato (and US) airforce is more numerous, better trained and better maintained. That's the reason why F16 has fared better than Mig29's in the history of operations. If India and Pakistan went to war we'd probably see things be much more on a par.
Still, F16 is a great plane, stood the test of time.

@265justy The MiG-29 is a multirole front line fighter, it is a counter of the US F-16 and F-18. The Su-27 is to counter the F-15. Also the MiG-29 is state of the art, in fact US pilots acknowledged that it was training that made the difference, thus it was all to the pilots themselves rather than the jets. So please be more specific, if a MiG-29 shoots down several Raptors flown by first graders for example, would you say the MiG is a raptor killer and the Raptors are shit buckets?

A Raptor will blow a Mig 29 away befoe it even knows its there. F15 & F16 pilots find the Raptor untouchable in Red Flag exercises. So a Mig 29 or SU27 dont stand a chance.

@265justy My point was that the pilot matters, and here it is not about my age or yours, it is about what is stated. MiG-29 and Su-27 have had a good long service amongst many nations including my country and earned a great deal of respect, but they are old and need replacements. Currently MiG-29s in Eastern Europe are being upgraded to MiG-35s, to which planes like F-16 and F-18 are considered inferior. The Raptor has a competitor of its own - the Russian PAK FA which is about to enter service.

It will be 10 years or more before it enters service and it looks like a YF23 copy. Ye might respect the Russian Mig 29 ,but there is a lot of eastern European nations starting to look to the West to replace there ageing Migs with F16s and Grippens.

@265justy According to the Russian ministry of Defense, the PAK FA will enter service in 2013, currently the prototype has passed successfully all tests so far and looks promising. Should I also indicate that the F-22 Raptor is a threat to small nations alone, all 130 Raptors so far are of little concern to Russia or China. And we are modernizing our airforces in Eastern Europe, which means that we are looking for modern equipment, not newly made old F-16s, only Poland has purchased some so far.

@265justy You can see the purchase orders by some other governments for upgrades to their MiGs, as well new ones being delivered. Russia has weapons contracts with many countries in Europe. Actually the days of the F-16 can be considered as over, since it is not capable of competing any newer aircraft, while MiG-29s can be upgraded to generation 4++ MiG-35s, same applies for many other Russian built jets. The Grippen is nice too, but this doesn't put the MiGs out of commission yet.

If any aircraft entusast or pilot wants to compare a fighter to another,they always seem to compare to the F16 to the fighter of choice. Its like the F16 is the plane to beat! Most F16s may be almost 20 to 25 years old but the F16 is still one of the greatest fighterjets of all time. Its a great dogfighter with lots of air to air kills WITHOUT LOSS & a good multirole platform.

@265justy F-16s do have losses, in dogfights and by AA weapon platforms. The F-15 and Su-27 are the ONLY two aircraft in the who saw action and did not have any losses. The F-16 is not a fighter of choice, however it presents the largest percentage of aircraft serving NATO and their allies. It is common for NATO pilots to compare to it, the Russians do the same for their MiGs. A friendly advice is to read something before saying anything, the WITHOUT LOSS statement was silly.

Isreal claims never to have lost a single F16 in its war with Syria in the 80s,but claimed over 40 Mig kills for its F16s. Pakistan claims to have lost a single F16 in an owngoal,but claimed 7 kills .The USAF never lost an F16 in aircombat & have claimed a Serbian Mig29, 2 Iraqi Mig23s & an Iraqi Mig25. A Dutch F16 also has a Serbian Mig29 kill.

There is a difference between no losses and losses by AA weaponry, just because there were no losses in areal combat doesn't mean that there weren't any. You should also check a variety of sources in order to get a clear picture. You should also know that USA may hardly admit any losses of its own aircraft, deeming the side claiming them as false. This was done in many occasions in order to project some sort of invincibility to people.

@265justy Also I checked some stuff as well, a Pakistani F-16 was downed by an Indian jet during the 1980s, however, the type of the aircraft is unknown because India denies participation in the event. Serbia claims a gun kill of an F-16 by a MiG-29, however, US sources neither deny or acknowledge it. Greece claims an F-16 kill from Turkey, however, the Turkish air force claims the opposite. In overall, 7 nations claim kills of F-16s in a dogfight.

Mig25 dosen`t need to be maneuvrable. It`s an interceptor, not a fighter. Those "poor avionics" were the best avionics available at the time and I`m pretty sure that the F15`s airframe would not be able to resist at Mach 3 either so think think before saying something as stupid as that. Mig25 was not made to counter F15. If you want to compare the F15 with a russian fighter, compare it to the Su27 or Su30

Well I love the Viper. In all honesty though it comes to pilot training in some cases like German Mig-29 vs. F-16 it would be the same outcome if the planes were traded German pilot win. Truthfully the Mig-29 is faster and more manueverable b/c it was made to counter F-16s and 15s. But the Viper gives you more bang for your buck across the bored being a superior multi-role frame that Mig-29 users wish the fulcrum could do.

How many times did I mention the advntages of the mig29 over F16? If you still haven`t understood why the mig is better i`ll rewrite it all below:
1-Mig29 has much more thrust. It has 2 engines, F16 has only 1
2-Mig29 is faster and has better acceleration, rate of climb etc
3-Mig29 is much more manuevrable at low speeds
4-Mig29 can perform at 45 degrees AOA, while F16 is blocked at 25
5-Mig29 has better thrust/weight ratio and lower wing loading

PROVEN IN AIR FORCES MONTLY MAG. 2- Speed dont mean nothing in the dogfight. Eg. Subsonic Mig 17s vs F4s & F105s in Vietnam & Harriers vs Mirages in the Falklands. 3- F16 as manoverable if not better at all speeds and more manoverable with full weapons load. 9G+. 4 -Ive seen F16s fiy higher angles of attack at airshows & its not a MUST HAVE MANOVER ANYWAY.

1-It will stay in air for a shorter ammount of time. And so what? A dogfight dosen`t last 2 hours or so.

@stalingradComando Dont be making up lame excusises about the Yugoslav Migs. The F16s blew em away. END OF STORY! And staying in the dogfight for longer does matter. As soon as the Migs fuel goes low they have to run from the dogfight giving its opponent such as an F16 the perfect chance to give chase and shot it down & the F16 has a topspeed of Mach 2.2 or 1500MPH which is still very fast and is enough for any fighter. All the modern fighters like Typhoon,Rafale only hit Mach 2+ anyway.

i`m not making excuses. That`s the truth. They lacked over 10 years of maintenance and were completely stripped of spare parts. They could barely fly and they were far from being combat ready. And f16 IS NOT MACH 2,2 CLASS. It barely reaches Mach 2. Mig29 don`t run out of fuel that easily though and F16 don`t carry much fuel too. F16`s combat radius is not much bigger than Mig29 plus dogfights last only a few minutes. mig29 has enough fuel to go in, kill the F16 and get back to base

Mig 29 is MACH 2.35. Mig29 is more maneuvrable at subsonic speeds too if that`s what concerns you.F16 is not a better fighter at all. It`s cheaper, plus it is better in the ground attack mode. Did you expect NATO countries (or other US-allies) to arm their forces with Mig29 during the height of the Cold war maybe?

The only reason why they got those 2 lucky kills in Serbia is because the Mig29`s were in very poor condition and their electronic warfare system were not working at all. This applies to F15`s too. No, that`s not unfair at all. Unfair is using an F16 against an Mig21. All Mig29`s come with HMD, it`s an essential feature. Should we get remove of the second engine and IRST sensor too, just to make it a fair match for the F16 maybe?

HMD does not compensate the lack of a second engine or the 25 degrees AOA limitation and more important it will not make the F16 more maneuvrable then it already is

The USSR was way ahead of the USA in stealth technology in the 60`s-70`s but eventually they realised that stealth compormises aerodynamic performance and gave up. All the research was declassified and later translated in english. Both B2 and F117 were designed upon Petr Ufimtsev work. If it wasn`t for him (a russian) you would not have stealth aircraft at all

When the F-117 came out it had very, very poor aerodynamic characteristics, even worse than those of 2nd gen. aircraft. For the Russians a similar compomise in aerodynamic performance was NOT acceptable, but now technology has evolved and stealth aircraft have much better aerodynamic performance

Mig29 is an F15 copy, as much as F15 is a Mig25 copy
Mi28 is much more similar to the Mi24 then to the Ah64
An-12 is not a C-130 copy, but a military version of the An-10
T-50 is much more similar to the Su-27 and YF-23 then to the F-22

@stalingradComando If you want to do some real serious research staliongradComando, you will see that our A-5 Vigilante had square intakes, and the same wing format as our F-15. The A-5 first flew in 1958.
The twin tail design was also used on our XB-70, also before the Mig-25 took flight.
In fact, your MiG-25 is a copy of our A-5 Vigilante and the XB-70.
You really lose this argument.

So now you are saying that all aircraft using square intakes are copies of the first aircraft to use square intakes? Or that all variable wing aircraft are copies of the first one who had variable wing design?
What`s that crap about cargo planes anyway? All cargo planes look alike and basically they all have the same airframe. Does this mean they are all copies of each other?
A copy is an aircraft using exactly the same airframe as another one. Like the J10 and F16 or the J11B and Su27

@stalingradComando No. I'm not saying that, you inferred it when you made reference that the F-15 has square intakes like the MiG-25. You were obviously that factor to compare the two planes, since the MiG-25 flew before the F-15.
All I did was point out that we already had the designs that mentioned in our XB-70 and the A-5 which flew before the Mig-25.
Now you come back and want to rewrite the script. Face it, you lost, the F-15 is not a copy of rhe MiG-25.

F15 is not a Mig25 copy, right, you got me on that but the other aircraft you mentioned before are not copies either. Borrowing a few design elements does mean necessarily that one of the two warplanes is a COPY. So unless they have the same exact role and the same exact airframe they`re not copies. Actually the only TRUE copies I can think about are the two chines planes I mentioned before

I'll look into those Chinese planes you mentioned at some point, but a real "copy job" by the Soviets was the Tupelov 4 bomber of yours which went into service after WW2.
During the war, an American B-29 had to make an emergency landing in far east Russia. The Russians gave us our aircrew back, but kept the B-29. Then the Tu-4 showed up, an exact copy of the B-29.

Sorry man but the F15 was built in the late 60s before the west got its first look at the Mig 25 up close after a Russian pilot defected to Japan in the 70s. Yeah the T-50 is a copy of the YF23. Yor right there for once! And i dont think the US would copy a piece of shit like the Yak141. That Yak141 was a failed copy of a Harrier Jump Jet.

The whole F15 program started because of Mig25. They knew about the Mig25 way before it even made it first flight
PAK FA is not a YF23 copy at all. I said that it is more similar to the YF 23 than to the F22 but their airframes are very different
Yak 141 and Harrier`s airframes do not even look alike. Yak 141 looks more like Mig25 then Harrier. If the stvol f-35 is not based in the Yak141, then why did Lockheed-Martin pay $400 million to Yakrolev to build 3 new prototypes?

@stalingradComando I aint lying. When you say Yak141 ,i tought it was the Yak 38. which was a copy of the Harrier. The Mig 25 was built to counter the YB -70 Yalkyre which never went into service , so the the US were building the F15 to replace the F4 anyway, They just made it a better plane than the Mig25 which could not turn in a dogfight at all. Even Iranian F5 Tigers got kills on the Iraqi Mig 25s in the Iran /iraq war. But the T50 is very very like the YF23. ITS A COPY.!

The US didn`t knew that the Mig25 was an interceptor. They though it was an agile fighter, while the Mig25 was not not meant for dogfighting at all.
T-50 is NOT very very very like YF-23 at all. The shape of the wings is completely different
