Varit i Thailand nu 2 gånger. Spenderade andra gången här nu på Khao Lak bara 1 vecka sen. Vi gick på Tsunami museum och såg den där polis båten också som spolades upp 1 km av vågen. Helt otroligt hur dom har lyckats komma upp på fötter igen. För att vara ärlig så skulle inte Sverige klara det. R.I.P alla som dog i Tsunamin.

There's a lesson to be learned from this. If you're ever on a beach and the 'tide' suddenly goes out alarmingly fast: Get off the beach and seek higher ground! Because that tide is coming back up and then some, and it won't be pretty.

The ocean just simply starts to rise. It depends on whether the crest or the trough of the wave arrives first, which in turn depends on the mechanics of how the wave was triggered.

@ProgHead777 Actually, if you watch the very beginning of the video, you'll see that's exactly what happens. At 10:20 the woman is climbing into a boat, knee deep in water. The video skips to 10:25 and that same boat is completely beached and the water level has dropped at least 6 feet in 5 minutes. By 10:29, like you said, the sea level has risen dramatically above where it was even at 10:20. That's when everyone starts to panic.

I thought at the 10:25 mark the cameraman had moved away from the water and the woman was walking away from the boat that she was climbing into at the start of the video. It is true, however, that not all tsunami are preceded by recession of the ocean level.

While I agree that the Japan disaster seemed worse it's mostly because of the amount or stunning video that came out of it. The Japanese have a early warning system in place and unfortunately, at the time there was no such system in place in the Indian ocean. If the water recides back, and things arn't looking normal, you get the hell out of there. You see waves start comming in with force, run like hell is on your heals. It's sad that something like this has to happen to reteach us this lesson. Though not everyone can notice these signs so in the end even the most prepared can get caught off gaurd.
