Years before this game came out, I had a dream about a game where you played as shadow and Maria followed you through a level. So I freaked out when I played this level :)
This is a game with it's good bits and bad bits, just like any other. For me... it's just... really polarized.
I have a lot of beefs with it, lots of reasons to call it garbage, but at the same time, there's a ton of things it has that I enjoyed. I honestly cannot choose an absolute for it.
If you still like the game thats fine. I'm not trying to make everyone hate this game. Everyone is asking "why dose everyone hate this game?" so I thought I sould explain.

Let me try to explain the view from the side that hates this game. The controles were slippery, the missions were repetative (with the "kill all alliens/gun troops" being the default out of ideas mission), the guns were just dumb, listening to shadow say damn was painful, and the camera didn't help. As for the story I thought it was trying to hard to be dark and edgy and the big plot twist (spoilers) that shadow was made with Black Doom's DNA was rediculous.
to reiterate, I don't despise this game, I like it, to an extent, the gameplay is more superior to Heroes, everything after it, and hell, even SA2B.
But, It has flaws, the ones I've stated below, generally people denied this game for the mediocre visuals/story, which tend to be the main cause of people not giving it a chance, in addition to the fact that it has Shadow in it.
Similar to the Werehog concept, this game would have been well recieved if it wasn't a Sonic game.
What people don't realize, this game was large and expansive, it was very intuitive with it's gun system and the exploration and platforming in this game is no doubt astounding.

The sad thing is that many of the mainstream gamers didn't like shadow the hedgehog because it wasn't like any of the sonic games, this was more like a graphic novel, it was to shed some light on the questions about shadow from Sonic Adventure 2. uh...there wasn't really any questions left after Adventure 2. What needed to be told about Shadow's story when he was originally planned to stay dead was told in Adventure 2 itself.
If this is the stage I think it is getting those 30 chaos creatures s a PAIN. he hero route was basically kill these 30 creatures. I got to 29 and could never ind the last one DX. Still adore this game though.
Artificial Chaos were successfully pushed back by Gun Forces and Shadow, prior to the incident on the Ark. LOVE THIS GAME, but this level was very bland. I only kept playing because of the inspirational vibe I got off of it
The Music is so sweet and sad :').....such a peaceful song it actually kinda fits and when Maria speaks aww memories....But this level is the Worst Level in the game.....Horrid even if your doing the Normal Mission you might take a wrong route but the Hero mission is so worse
I gave up after an hour since I couldn't ind the last few RPs...So I just went to the Goal Ring - E RANK -_-
@Zephyricalus I know this game is already old, but I say try it out. Don't listen to professional reviews. They are for the most part, telling you bullshit. I can tell you that it's a decent game with flaws. There will be some bad level design in some stages, but if you can get past that and some flaws, you might enjoy it somewhat.

@K83b2 It's sad how much hate is put into this...Sonic 06 I can understand...but shadow was REALLY fast, weapons were optional which is what most people were bitching about...and graphics could use some work, but if you like Shadow, I say you can enjoy this game just fine...I find it creative how it has branching paths, though most of the endings could use some work...but those aren't canon anyway, Last Story is.

remember Shadow was originally created as part of an experiment to find a cure for a deadly disease that maria had at the time. I'm sure that after the project was complete and maria was administered the cure, side effects included physical (and maybe mental as well) abilites were enhanced to the point of being superhuman.
This could mean it might be possible for maria to actually return in a future game, maybe (.01%).
Looks like i'm not the only one - I clocked up about 35 minutes looking for the last "research experiment", having found 34 of them, but in the end just gave up and went for the other objective. I played this game for the first time yesterday and the levels are massive.

@soniman32 I really don't think the level was THAT bad. They just made the number of artificial chaos to destroy quite a bit too high. Their locations were also pretty convoluted and hard to track down. But the neutral mission was far too easy.
I just love this song... I was going through some rough times when I had this game and this song just claims me down when these memories are brought up... Shadow Kills ALL!!!!
the song sounds so.... sorrowful... i think it suits Maria so well. at the end, when you deafeat all of the Artificial Chaos, (which took me 4 days :( it is hard ) i keep thinking she would say "Shadow... Shadow, you've done enough!"

the only way to REALLY beat the game is to get PERFECT on every level (an A rank) which is INSANE!! if you do you will go through a super secret "training" level!!! (and you have to have beaten the last way and gotten ALL of the level combinations theres over 300!!!!!!
Actually according to my friend theres an easier way to beat the game. im not sure about that training level though but all you have to do is play every row and beat both bosses for each row. I think thats how he got to Black doom
theres only 1 way to get to the final boss! i said that you have to beat devil doom AND get all the A ranks to unlock a training (i think... i have yet to unlock it) level

I only played this game for two weeks, since I was borrowing it. So I most likely missed parts...
Oh, you missed ALOT of parts! You need to spend a month playing in order to get (most of) all the levels. I already have all the levels, an impressive collection of music libraries, all the music (But for some reason I don't have event 5), and Last Story beaten, and all the special weapons. The one thing I don't have is the expert mode.

Ya, so would I. But Shadow's equally fast in anything else. But I think Shadow's better. He can use chaos attacks with only one emerald. He doesn't even need a superform to use them either. In this game, he has a gun and Sonic doesn't. Shadow is SO better than Sonic.
Not sure if guns necessarily make Shadow better (although guns were bashed more than they should have since they weren't necessarily broken), but yeah Shadow is pretty cool character. Sometimes I'll choose him over Sonic and then vice-versa.
Well sometimes I'll just like to choose Shadow over Sonic and then choose Sonic. I'm making it sound confusing, But anyhow, I just think both characters are cool. And Vice-Versa means the opposite.
I beat them easy but many times died. Those ark in base level sucks. when i first played my timer showed that i beated The Doom level in 27 minutes...wohoo...

the song sounds so.... sorrowful... i think it suits Maria so well. at the end, when you deafeat all of the Artificial Chaos, (which took me 4 days :( it is hard ) i keep thinking she would say "Shadow... Shadow, you've done enough!"

You unlock expert mode once you get them all. I have yet to do that.

the only way to REALLY beat the game is to get PERFECT on every level (an A rank) which is INSANE!! if you do you will go through a super secret "training" level!!! (and you have to have beaten the last way and gotten ALL of the level combinations theres over 300!!!!!!

Actually according to my friend theres an easier way to beat the game. im not sure about that training level though but all you have to do is play every row and beat both bosses for each row. I think thats how he got to Black doom

theres only 1 way to get to the final boss! i said that you have to beat devil doom AND get all the A ranks to unlock a training (i think... i have yet to unlock it) level

This song always made me feel sad. I really wish I knew more about Shadow spending time with Maria. And I want to see Shadow smile for once. Like a happy smile. Not a smirk or.... whatever else. @___@;;;
I only played this game for two weeks, since I was borrowing it. So I most likely missed parts...

Oh, you missed ALOT of parts! You need to spend a month playing in order to get (most of) all the levels. I already have all the levels, an impressive collection of music libraries, all the music (But for some reason I don't have event 5), and Last Story beaten, and all the special weapons. The one thing I don't have is the expert mode.

Yeah, doesn't surprise me... At first when I was playing, I was so confused. Aliens? Black Doom? Androids? (Which I sort of ignored.)

Yea if u check my playlist out Shelbernettah then you'll see The Doom the Ark not really all the way but its alright Shadow is the bomb period better than sonic just not in speed

What do you mean less in speed? Shadow is still pretty damn fast, even in his own game. If you mean like in Sonic Next Gen, then I'd agree there.

Ya, so would I. But Shadow's equally fast in anything else. But I think Shadow's better. He can use chaos attacks with only one emerald. He doesn't even need a superform to use them either. In this game, he has a gun and Sonic doesn't. Shadow is SO better than Sonic.

Not sure if guns necessarily make Shadow better (although guns were bashed more than they should have since they weren't necessarily broken), but yeah Shadow is pretty cool character. Sometimes I'll choose him over Sonic and then vice-versa.

I beat them easy but many times died. Those ark in base level sucks. when i first played my timer showed that i beated The Doom level in 27 minutes...wohoo...
