There are longer videos about the build up to this overtaking. It took several laps from Hakkinen to get into that position. Easy to find from Youtube. By the way Schumacher congratulated Hakkinen about that move. When asked in Top Gear "Were there any driver he feared, He Said: "Hakkinen". They respected eachother..
I don't understand why the overtake from Hakkinen on Schumacher at Spa 2000 is valued as such a great overtake. Schumacher had problems with his car and was noticeably slower than Hakkinen. Despite this, Schumacher kept Hakkinen behind him. It wasn't until they ran into the backmarker and Schumacher could no longer defend his position.

i do not understand why people dislike the new super aerodynamic cars with a ton of downforce and DRS and KERS. As I see it, pushing the car faster to the limits of new physics with these new technologies takes up an absolutely new realm of skill and feel. I think all seasons of F1 were great in their own way, they succeeded and pushed the capabilities of the technology that was present in their moment.

@Maierpartie Huh? There's plenty of moves by Ferrari drivers in here. Don't forget this is ALL of the overtakes using backmarkers from 1980-2000 (basically). If a team or driver falls short there is only one reason why, they didn't make any such move. End..
Why can't we just have NA, 500hp V8 F1s with slick tyres and no fancy aerodynamics? Also, tracks like Dijon and Jarama should make a comeback into the calendar.

I believe the 2000 season may have been my first season watching too. That's still the best pass I've seen in F1. Only thing close was the pass in the same spot this year between Webber and Alonso at the same track. Spa is definitely my favorite
Because despite in my opinion Schumacher being arguably the greatest F1 driver of all time, he will also be renowned for 2 very deliberate moves. Firstly, in 1994 when Hill went to overtake, Schumacher turned into Hill crashing into his side taking them both out of the race meaning he won the championship by default. Then in 1997 @ Jerez, he tried the same thing on Villeneuve but this time only he crashed out and Villeneuve took the title. A great driver but some shady tactics!
@Neutreus in 1994 the guilt was on both sides..schumacher was on the outside but at the front, hill was very optimistic and schumacher closed the door... only 1997 was schumachers fault..

No Surprise to me that Mansell was the star of so many of these clips but seeing Senna loosing out in so many of them was a surprise. When it came to carving our way through lapped traffic he was The Man.
@MGH74 Unfortunately, it simply isn't possible to pass another car without DRS or blue flags. Modern F1 cars rely too heavily on wings for their downforce and when they get close to another car they simply lose too much downforce.
If modern F1 cars relied more on ground effect-generated downforce it would be much easier. But then the cars would be signficantly faster and safety would be even more of a concern than it already is...
The first F1 season that I remember I was watching was 2000. An it's still the best season I've seen. Why? Because it was classic Schumi vs Häkkinen season, they had unlimited V10s, no DRS or KERS...
@Kyoshomies OK. In '98 they introduced those stupid tires and made some other changes and I dunno everything seemed to go downhill from this point on. Schumacher-Häkkinen fights were nice (and they got along very well) but overall the series wasn't the same any more.
@xxWhyIsTheRumGonexx I think the Formulas were pretty good in still in early 00's. Then they started to limit the engines, they started to mess around with different gualifications and the last few years have been pretty bad. Old school tracks have gone one by one... those tire rules are just stupid. If you want pit stops, bring the refueling back.

I think Reutemann`s overtaking on Lauda during the 1978 British GP should be added to the compilation. There was a huge rivalry that year between Lauda against Ferrari/Reutemann and also between Michelin and Goodyear!
Lauda didn`t want to go the podium after the race...
@PS3GameProductions Of course they were exciting but still I didn't enjoy them as much as I did at those early 2000's. Limited engines, Kers and now DRS just kills the racing for me. I don't see the ultimate race car on earth, I just see a bunch of rules. And if four driver are in one point after the last race, can you say that the champion was truly the best? Of course, all the glory for the winner but like those Two driver battles more.
BTW: MS has by far the best starts this season. Not only does that show he's not too old, but it also shows he's not a bad driver at all. And everybody knows Mercedes is clearly worse than Red Bull, McLaren, and Ferrari. Last season, he was only getting back. Now he IS back. And if the relative car performance shifts in his favor next season, he will SERIOUSLY fight for the championship, however unrealistic it may LOOK from his PAPER results the last two seasons. He STILL has what it takes.

Good observation, but in my opinion the biggest problem is that many drivers cry when they meet a real warrior, as Mansell (dad said, he put a brick on the throttle at the beginning of each race :) ) or Senna. So for this attitude (look for example Hamilton in Monza, or Button in Suzuka) i would give a drive through penalty, after 3 a 10 place grid penalty. Why? Because in these conditions everybody would concentrate on his own work.

@Maierpartie Huh? There's plenty of moves by Ferrari drivers in here. Don't forget this is ALL of the overtakes using backmarkers from 1980-2000 (basically). If a team or driver falls short there is only one reason why, they didn't make any such move. End..

I believe the 2000 season may have been my first season watching too. That's still the best pass I've seen in F1. Only thing close was the pass in the same spot this year between Webber and Alonso at the same track. Spa is definitely my favorite

Because despite in my opinion Schumacher being arguably the greatest F1 driver of all time, he will also be renowned for 2 very deliberate moves. Firstly, in 1994 when Hill went to overtake, Schumacher turned into Hill crashing into his side taking them both out of the race meaning he won the championship by default. Then in 1997 @ Jerez, he tried the same thing on Villeneuve but this time only he crashed out and Villeneuve took the title. A great driver but some shady tactics!

@Neutreus in 1994 the guilt was on both sides..schumacher was on the outside but at the front, hill was very optimistic and schumacher closed the door... only 1997 was schumachers fault..

great vid, I miss these old days of drivers having to use skill on back markers, it really seperated the men from boys. BAN BLUE FLAGS thats what I say.
No Surprise to me that Mansell was the star of so many of these clips but seeing Senna loosing out in so many of them was a surprise. When it came to carving our way through lapped traffic he was The Man.

@MGH74 Unfortunately, it simply isn't possible to pass another car without DRS or blue flags. Modern F1 cars rely too heavily on wings for their downforce and when they get close to another car they simply lose too much downforce.
If modern F1 cars relied more on ground effect-generated downforce it would be much easier. But then the cars would be signficantly faster and safety would be even more of a concern than it already is...

The first F1 season that I remember I was watching was 2000. An it's still the best season I've seen. Why? Because it was classic Schumi vs Häkkinen season, they had unlimited V10s, no DRS or KERS...

@Kyoshomies OK. In '98 they introduced those stupid tires and made some other changes and I dunno everything seemed to go downhill from this point on. Schumacher-Häkkinen fights were nice (and they got along very well) but overall the series wasn't the same any more.

Then they started to limit the engines, they started to mess around with different gualifications and the last few years have been pretty bad. Old school tracks have gone one by one... those tire rules are just stupid. If you want pit stops, bring the refueling back.

I think Reutemann`s overtaking on Lauda during the 1978 British GP should be added to the compilation. There was a huge rivalry that year between Lauda against Ferrari/Reutemann and also between Michelin and Goodyear!
Lauda didn`t want to go the podium after the race...

@PS3GameProductions Of course they were exciting but still I didn't enjoy them as much as I did at those early 2000's. Limited engines, Kers and now DRS just kills the racing for me. I don't see the ultimate race car on earth, I just see a bunch of rules. And if four driver are in one point after the last race, can you say that the champion was truly the best? Of course, all the glory for the winner but like those Two driver battles more.

BTW: MS has by far the best starts this season. Not only does that show he's not too old, but it also shows he's not a bad driver at all. And everybody knows Mercedes is clearly worse than Red Bull, McLaren, and Ferrari. Last season, he was only getting back. Now he IS back. And if the relative car performance shifts in his favor next season, he will SERIOUSLY fight for the championship, however unrealistic it may LOOK from his PAPER results the last two seasons. He STILL has what it takes.

Good observation, but in my opinion the biggest problem is that many drivers cry when they meet a real warrior, as Mansell (dad said, he put a brick on the throttle at the beginning of each race :) ) or Senna. So for this attitude (look for example Hamilton in Monza, or Button in Suzuka) i would give a drive through penalty, after 3 a 10 place grid penalty. Why? Because in these conditions everybody would concentrate on his own work.
