I thought trees as symbols of christmas started when christians conquerers invaded pagan lands and cut down Thor's tree. Decorating started in the 1500s. So, I thought this bible passage was about making idols by cutting trees, carving them in the image of gods, decorating them, and carrying them to town. That's what it says, so that's how I interpreted it. It didn't occur to me until recently that atheists and some christians (jehovah witnesses) see it as a warning against christmas trees.
I happen to be a pagan, and this was very interesting to me, I actually learned some things I never knew about different sects of my own belief, so I thank you even though you don't agree with the concept of a god. Will you do one about Halloween? I dunno if you have already cuz I haven't gone through your entire list yet.

As a christian I do not celebrate Christmas. Also, in America one should really think about where it's coming from with yule tide,yule log, Mistletoe ect. I had never heard of this during Christmas in the country that I came from.

I have been taught that Jesus was born in the spring. Spring is when the Lambs give birth.-Lamb of God... Anyhoozer, we now celebrate Xmas because people wanted to cellibrate the solstice. The church conformed to society in order for its people not to feel bad.

Great vid... but there's a lot that you missed. As the winter solstice approaches, the sun sinks lower and lower into the sky (meaning, it rises lower), eventually passing over the constellation Crux, or the southern cross (crucifixion?). After getting to its absolute lowest point, it stays in that position for 3 days (dead for 3 days?) and rises up again 1 degree on th 25th (ressurrection?). It's all symbolic of the sun's light winning out over the darkness of the night.

Well it depends on which "Christian" you are refering to. I don't view a power hungry person as an acting christian. In fact I see it as quite a burdening belief system to where you have to stay pretty vunerable througout your lifetime to truly achieve even close to the lifestyle it demands. However, I've read versions of how it all came to be. In most atheists eyes it was forced modification. According to most christians they were simply trying to incorporate the significance of Jesus' birth.

Oh dear...I am not one of the "happy holiday" frowners. I always take that with complete appreciation. I live in too large of a melting pot. I think there are more people however that are well informed of the origins of our pretty tree, wintery deco rituals. The small town trailor lights on the redwood street may not be in the know but they are in the dark with most things. I think all too often every creature that calls him/her a christian gets categorized in this bunch.

In English I like Winter's Veil, the World of Warcraft version (yes, the online game) better than Christmas or winter solstice. It has a much more poetic sound to it.
In Finnish my entire family uses the word Joulu, inspite of some being atheists, some being religious and some in-between.
Joulu just sounds better than the word for winter solstice (talvipäivänseisaus). Even the month December is called joulukuu (Christmas month).

I like this vid KH. It is fun to read on how solstice & Christmas developed and have naturally been tied together. You do well to show the connections. The bottom line being the awareness/celebration of the physical and spiritual nature of life/death/rebirth, life after death ect. It's all very deep and meaningful.

i can remember being in so many "christmas" plays in my private schools and i would usually be a lead actor who came forth with "the true meaning of christmas." now that i'm an atheist i say fuck x mas and hail the solstice!

I like Christmas, it is virtually devoid of Christianity anyway so let's just have a happy Christmas and enjoy ourselves. The word contains the name of a mythical deity but so does Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, January, jovial, saturnine, mercurial and aphrodisiac.

Great vid... but there's a lot that you missed. As the winter solstice approaches, the sun sinks lower and lower into the sky (meaning, it rises lower), eventually passing over the constellation Crux, or the southern cross (crucifixion?). After getting to its absolute lowest point, it stays in that position for 3 days (dead for 3 days?) and rises up again 1 degree on th 25th (ressurrection?). It's all symbolic of the sun's light winning out over the darkness of the night.

Well it depends on which "Christian" you are refering to. I don't view a power hungry person as an acting christian. In fact I see it as quite a burdening belief system to where you have to stay pretty vunerable througout your lifetime to truly achieve even close to the lifestyle it demands. However, I've read versions of how it all came to be. In most atheists eyes it was forced modification. According to most christians they were simply trying to incorporate the significance of Jesus' birth.

Oh dear...I am not one of the "happy holiday" frowners. I always take that with complete appreciation. I live in too large of a melting pot. I think there are more people however that are well informed of the origins of our pretty tree, wintery deco rituals. The small town trailor lights on the redwood street may not be in the know but they are in the dark with most things. I think all too often every creature that calls him/her a christian gets categorized in this bunch.

In English I like Winter's Veil, the World of Warcraft version (yes, the online game) better than Christmas or winter solstice. It has a much more poetic sound to it.
In Finnish my entire family uses the word Joulu, inspite of some being atheists, some being religious and some in-between.
Joulu just sounds better than the word for winter solstice (talvipäivänseisaus). Even the month December is called joulukuu (Christmas month).

Well I am materialistic, that's for sure, but not anti-religious, just non-religious. I would bet "KingHeathen" is much more anti-religious than I am.
Apparently we speak a slightly different language. What you and I consider an atheist is a different thing(BTW, I have not changed my definttion), I don't care, so I wonder if you have a term for someone like me who goes beyond just atheism. Again, just curios.

anything else believed is extra bullshit people attach. and is neither a requirement nor a cancellation to atheism.
your definition of atheism is apparently only those who are materialistic and have zero religion. like i've already said, that's not a requirement to being an atheist..regardless of how prevalent that type of atheist is. therefore your definition is superfluous.

The subplot of the video is the history of the Christmas holiday. And so you know, you can believe in an afterlife and even something you may call "hell" and still not believe in a god. How exactly is it "expected" for you to be an ass just because I made the video?

I never said to each their own; I said I WOULD have said it, had it the cause been more constructive. I'm not offended or upset; I rated the movie 5 stars.
I admire your ability to dig up facts about things like this, and I supportive when you're out to set aggressive Christians straight when they're out stepping on other people's ways, but I don't know what to think about this one. Interesting, yes, but I don't know if I should support the motive even though I appreciate the information.

First of all whither you believe in an afterlife doesn't have any affect on if there is one. Believe all you want and I'll not believe all I want; neither one has any affect on reality. Secondly I do agree that this guy is a jackass, not because he made this video but because he has created his whole identity around atheism, which is a negative. I'm an atheist, but atheist means I don't believe in god, I don't bother describing myself by telling people what I am not.

I might say 'I'm an atheist' but I don't make that my personality, not even on the internet. So I wouldn't say that was hypocrisy, probably just miscommunication. To clarify I'm not annoyed by people who say 'I am atheist' I'm annoyed by people who are only capable of saying 'I am atheist.'

Just curious....have you ever had a Christian get in your face about the fact that you don't believe in their god? I live in the Bible Belt of the South and I can tell you that I have heard the retarded argument that "atheists still celebrate Christmas so they must believe deep down" and the idea of the "war on Christmas" because some people want to include other religions...stuff like that bothers me. Because there are much much worse things and I wouldn't feel any better after making 332 videos on youtube about it. Also there is not going to be prayer in public schools just like racial segregation isn't coming back, just like slavery isn't coming back and so on. Yes they are getting in the way of stem cell research and a lot of other crap but I don't have the same kind of save the world attitude you have.

The people of God who were called israel in the Old Testament were commanded not to participate in or learn the way of the heathens, but to follow the ways of God, but they got mixed up in them anyhow. God still commands His people to not be involved in these things, but to leave them to the heathen. If you do not believe in God that is fine...if you do then fear Him and obey him, or else do not think that you have any part in His glory!

The jews do not believe that Christ was the messiah, thus they used to not celebrate x-mas...but Channukah, which was just another way to have a festival. Now alot of them do both because it is "fun"...which is all it should be associated with, a drunken festival!

This is the sort of video that can only be met with rational thought... which, in esence, means that the Christians have no arguments. This was pieced together to perefection, and you can't deny the obvious copy treatment to all these Pagan holidays. Good job on the video, and keep 'em up!

I like this vid KH. It is fun to read on how solstice & Christmas developed and have naturally been tied together. You do well to show the connections. The bottom line being the awareness/celebration of the physical and spiritual nature of life/death/rebirth, life after death ect. It's all very deep and meaningful.
