I just played this game for the first time ever the other day based on this video. I haven't gone a week without playing NES for years and actually had never once played a Master Sys (I live in Florida). It blew my mind how good it was. I am also amazed how under rated the SMS is in the states.
This game is actually beautiful. It changed my life too. I appreciate it more because of this game! I'm a musician and artist and games like these informed my aesthetic world view, and my idea about how you can create worlds through art.
For me this is the best game and the most influential that has ever been produced cause it opened up so many doors to the great Final Fantasy games for ex and a lot of others whove taken bits and pieces from it and no true gamer should ever let this game go unplayed even if they think its only for nostalgia its worth it.
Anyone who havent played this game PLAY IT. Its worth it now in 2011 i do, and just think of how old it is and still so good.
Its mindblowing back in the day this game opened up so many doors for other games the whole fantasy era broke up starting with this game in style.
For me its no doubt that this is the best Phantasy star too the music is epic and its just a game that was 5-10 years before its time and in gaming years that tells a lot thats like 50-100 years IRL.
I have a painful memory with Phantasy Star. I went to some dude's house who had a sega master system which was a miracle on it's own since everyone else had a NES at the time but me, and he didn't lemme play but watch. My dad bought me alot of games when i was young. As much as he hates games he gave me great memories lol. He goes nuts when he hears I still play games at my age. what can I say, i'm a video game cohort. Thanks and sorry dad lol.
My story with this game is kinda funny. This one was a big hit in brazil back at the time mainly because it was translated to portuguese. I was 7yo when i first played it and i must confess that it scared the shit out of me : The dungeon music, dying everytime i went for a refreshing walk on the beach and obviously the feeling of powerlessness that raises when you don't know how to proceed in a game. This one had a totally different mechanics that i didn't grasp back then.
I only managed to play it again when i was 14 and that time the story was different: I've had a blast playing it! The RPG genre that i hated so much (and i blamed PS for that) become my new beloved discovery, and running deep inside the plot and mysteries became my new drive for gaming in the years to come.
Phantasy Star is one of my top favorite games ever. Hope that the new generation of gamers can get their hands on it and appreciate its beauty as we are now!
"Had to play D&D in my basement. Which sucked!" I don't get why you would say that. I always loved playing D&D. In some ways it's still better than anything on pc or console. There may come a day when the experience can be matched but that day is not here yet.
i remember this, playing me and my two brothers early 93 or 94. my mom used to not like this game.. but the game was great and we had to ignore her. lol
then I repeat the game after long time, and the game was still great, the feeling on it, the simple mechanism which just works fine.. also got the chance to play phantasy star 2 and 4 (I rly dunno what they did at 3.. but still I wanna take a look at this one closely)...
thanks man, yes.. this game made me gamer too.. and love RPG.
I dunno why these games worked so well, I think the fact that the graphics look as they do the story tends to stick out more. Where now I haven't played a game where the story really hit me. The old FF's for example, these new ones are very pale. Kingdom Hearts was good at first, but then it got all complicated...
I believe simplicity is best, and that's what old games did. The story had to be good to keep you motivated, where now it's just about "woah awesome graphics" I don't like the new.
Hey everybody! I have released my new album 'Progenitor' which has electronic music inspired by great games such as the Phantasy Star series. You can check it out and download it for free on my youtube channel if you're interested!

PS1 is a timeless classic. I love the plastic, brightly colored look to everything and the backgrounds and enemies during combat are awesome to this day.
i agree... this is one of the best games of all time. i actually started playing Phantasy Star II first, then I got curious and went out looking for the first one.
@Wildcatbeer How did you finish it in 4 days? I can't even beat most of the monsters in the beginning. There's a lot of leveling up starting out.. Is there less grinding as the game goes on?
Some grinding at the start, to get a better weapon from the store in the 'city' SW of your starting place. After that you don't really need to grind much, except money occasionally.
@EnigmaHood Used a walk through, especially for the dungeons! Grind on Fishmen for a while when you get Odin and always stock up on Burgers. The first time I played this game it took me about 2 months. The end guy took me 9 tries because I wasn't a very high level.
I totally agree with you wow o,o i never knew somebody out there had almost the same rants as me, and another thing :p the newer generation should tape their mouths shut and be forced to play 99 Atari games to find out what it means to have a good decent game.
Why do nostalgic adults all assume that "us kids" don't appreciate what old stuff was like? Lots of us still play old videogames. I play NES games all the time, and I've played games older then that. Nethack is in my top 5 games, and I'm on a hunt for Pokemon Blue right now. Oh, and I'm 16.
@FortWhenTeaThyme 1 word...ROFLOL!!!!! For starters nostalgic adults - and other teenagers think that because that is 90% of the chance true now adays. Over half of my friends no longer watch cutscenes, dislike games with bad graphics, and only care for the graphics thats alreayd disregarding the ps1 and gc. Im glad that your not like that though...and I too play the SNES, NES, Atari, and others....Im on the hunt for Zelda Oracle of Seasons for the game boy color. And btw...I'm 16.
lol, i always think of you as my brother or something. we always love the same games, and have the same rants about games :-)
even nostalgic things... my sister bought the house were i lived as a child, and when visiting her, i always think about the games i played were the tv stood;-)
There's a RPG for the Japanese Famicom ( NES ) called Lagrange Point. It had a VRC7 chip which added FM Synthesis to the NES. Lagrange Point also seems to borrow quite abit from Phantasy Star.
Waiting for my university exams to be done before I invest some time into RPGs, but I do plan on getting around to playing the original Phantasy Star 1, I have the Sonic's Ultimate Genisis collection on my PS3 (Ultimate Megadrive Collection in my own PAL territory).
So I am just waiting for the right time for me to start investing into this game after my university exams are over in the next few weeks.
However the first game to make me become a real gamer, was Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time.
It was the first time I ever played a game that had a story, before that it was all Super Mario or Mario 64 or Yoshi's Story or Mario Kart 64 for me.
I did have Pokemon on the Gameboy, but that was after I got Pokemon Stadium on the N64 and I wanted to form a team of my own Pokemon so that is where I got my first Pokemon Gameboy game, 18 moonths after I got Ocarina of Time
Now I have ALLOT of RPGs and ALLOT of Anime compared to what I used to have.
We never forget our first times...
My first time on a Japanese RPG was with Skies of Arcadia for the Gamecube that was originally on the Dreamcast and ported to the Gamecube.
I had to track it down allot before I got it first, and when I did I played it and it was at this moment that I knew that I loved Anime and Japanese RPGs with Anime visuals.
I was a kid like you once who had nothing much except a few things....
I was around 13 until I had my own console that was an N64.
So I definitely know what it was like to be without any good RPGs.
I know what it was like to be without Anime too, as Anime only appeared on early morning TV shows and I really wanted to tape allot of Pokemon and Dragonball and Yugioh so I could have Anime to watch.
I take it that they never release an English version for the Sega Genesis system =(. I've came across this game, I really liked the music which is why I still remembered it, but they only had a Japanese version.
Unlike Final Fantasy Phantasy Star requires skill, luck, and a whole lot of using your head. You can actually DIE in your first encounter, and the story is second to none. Phantasy Star is my favorite series of all time. My only regret is that the ages remakes are japan consoles only.
when i was 5 and started to read,my uncle had this game new but we had no sega.I had no idea there were other video games.it was the weirdest shit i ever seen cause other than mario 1 and 3 i knew nothing.I remember trying to read the title,i could not (even worse being spanish my first language ) and i never realized how to, it was until not long ago when i saw the cover and i knew i had seen it before and i was shocked by the price that game goes for in ebay(sorry for the stupid comment)
I'm playing through this now, got Myau and doing a little levelling in forest and on the beaches before heading off to rescue Odin. Its all good in Phantasy Star!
Holy crap I remember Dragon Warrior! And the metal slimes would always run away from me and the magic wyverns and yellow werewolves (forgot the name) were tough! I managed to max my level (30 if I recall correctly) and beat the last dungeon.
Yeah i Totaly agree this is the best game of all time just in the change of gaming in general so many good role-play games came after this, but this one was the first and blew my mind also back in the day.
Anyone else think its really cool that he has the acutaly copy that got him hooked on games in general? The graphics for this game had to be... like... 12 bit (yeah, I know... dont say it...).
After watching you video, I went out and bought Phantasy Star Collection for GBA and popped it into my Gamecube. Very cool, thank you for tge recommendation!
Bought it for $5 off the Wii shop channel, and I don't regret it for a single moment. Despite how the graphics have aged i think they are still beautiful for 8-Bit. As for the grinding, well it's not that bad but can get tedious. I haven't beat it yet but it's great so far. 8.5/10
@nallenthepuh Trust me. It's better! i LOVED that game and to this day, i still miss it. i would play that game for hours on end and have dozed off with the controller in my hands. "Oh... Battle's over. Next stop..."
@nallenthepuh I just started it too, I really wanted to start from the IV one on genesis because of better graphics, becuz the original looks so awful, and no I'm not worried about graphics but still........but anyway I took his and everyone else's advise and I'm playing the first one for the past couple of days, it's a great game and annoyingly goods sometimes too. Tooke me forever to get out of the cave where u find Noah
@cdubmeyer hmm the graphic is actually pretty good in the cutscenes, the 3d dungoens are awsome and the battlescreens isn't too bad either. the only minor complains overall on the graphic might be the overworld.
i really recomand to read story in the booklet before playin the game,
@nallenthepuh dude I think the overall graphics over everything is terrible considering these days and I'm a huge debater on games can be great without graphics, I don't care about the graphics in this game but since it is the subject we are talking about I don't know where or what your comparing the graphics too to call them good in certain areas
Dinosaur or not, everyone should appreciate the origins of their favorite genre. Be it Wolfenstein 3d or Doom for the FPS'er, this or any other classic for RPG gamers.
One thing - did PS1 come with a Map or is it just the map in the instructions manual (the mini-map with clouds over certain areas)? Further, does PS3 have like a poster/map thing? Anyway, it was a great review.
The only problem with PS1 is that you can literally get stuck in the game. If you saved on Motavia, go get the Luverno ship, and cast return somewhere, you wind up in Motavia and can't do anything unless you have the landrover/ice cutter/hover craft.
Yep, I remember I had this and II, III, and IV. Great game at the time. I remember Sega photocopying and sending me some maps for dungeons. It was awesome. PSII was good, but it was totally tedious to wander the dungeons with tough enemies. PSIII was slow and had poor animations. PSIV was great and the best overall. But I liked PS1 the most. The good old days. I sold the games back then so I could go to school...
I remember my next door neighbour (a kid) showed me Phantasy Star for the first time complaining that it was boring. So I decided to grab it off him and give it a chance. I WAS HOOKED! I played that game so so so much back in what must have been 1989. I just loved the backdrops, the animation, the freakin' hard dungeons. Having played it gave me good experience to take with me to working in the Sega Hotline at the time. CLASSIC STUFF!
I don't know if my favorite is Phantasy Star II or IV, II makes cry a lot, but IV gets better music and pictures also it has many other characters for elect. But Nei is irreplaceable :( I miss her.
You Phantasy Star. And for that reason alone I Subscribed to your Channel lol. Great game, Great Series. (Pre PSO and PSU.) Even to this day I am no where near bored or sick of them.
argh, i can't remember the name of this sega game i used to play when i was a kid... all i know was that it was an RPG and you got to pick who your main character was at the beginning, and i know that at least two of the characters could be a demon or a robot/cyborg. later on you could ask some of the characters to join your party. can anyone help?
hey, thanks for the reply, i found out what it was as soon as i typed it. it's called the 7th saga and it's for the SNES. i hadn't played it for 17 years, so things get a bit fuzzy! challenging rpg though since you only get 2 party members max.
This game is amazing... I played it online for free on an website emulator and it was just as challenging as it was then. I had to google hints lol. This game really did change home video games. Oh and if you are a hard core fan, google the Phantasy Star Novel, based on the video game. It is amazingly written and you can even email the author about it.
@HappyConsoleGamer Dude i was 6 years old when i moved to brasilia (brazil). My neighbor was 17 and he had this game, we got pretty close and he showed me this game at his home and i freaked out. He sold it to me for 5 reais (2 dollars) and i played it every single day of my childhood. This is my favorite game of all times and it's the game that made me a gamer, i'm now 17 and my old neighbor is still a big friend. We have kinda like the same roots /salute you sir for that. Subbed!
You're not from the U.S? That's not important or anything, I was just curious cuz you sound like you can be from the U.S, but in the video you mention otherwise. Phantasy Star is my favorite series. Phantasy Star Online is the best game ever.
You're not from the U.S? That's not important or anything, I was just curious cuz you sound like you can be from the U.S, but in the video you mention otherwise. Phantasy Star is my favorite series. Did you play Phantasy Star Online?
I'm 13 and i am growing up in the modern day gaming and I dont like call of duty or anything like that. No, what some might see as terrible graphics and tedious level grinding, I see it as a thing of beauty. I know that sounds really nerdy, but I just have always loved the old consoles and have lots of memories playing the super nintendo with my brother and my father when I was 3 and 4. Ever since I've been an old school gamer as well as retro everything. The times arent as awesome as they were.
They have the first 4 Phantasy Stars on Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection for ps3 and xbox, not to mention it has about 50 games total for like $20 at Gamestop. Definitely a good buy.
i totally agree with you man. Phantasy Star was/is my favorite game of all time. You said pretty much everything I always thought of the game. This game blew me away and nothing since has come close to that feeling. I too played D&D, and I think this was my first taste of that on a home system. The immersion the multiple planets, the number of dungeons, vehicles. Everything about this game was way ahead of it's time. And it was all done on 8 bits. Everything after played catch up.
yea i agree with you about kids who prefer next gen systems but i tried playing ps1 but i just couldnt get into to i moved through the others and luckily i fell for ps4 its awsome ass hell
Nice video man. :D Hey, do you know where I can get Phantasy Star 1 for PSP? This game isn't in the compilation "Sega Genesis". I really want to play this game in my PSP!
@Paulguajolotero im guessing its because phantasy star 1 is a master system game, and the sega collection on the psp is a genesis collection, and not a master system collection.
Nice seeing Phantasy Star again. But I think you'd be surprised at how many kids are open minded with these older games. A few years ago I picked up an old NES with a few games and when I hooked it up to the TV and put on Super Mario Brothers, the two kids of the people I was living with at the time were enthralled with it. The Wii and the PS3 in the house and the games with the amazing graphics weren't even touched for weeks, all they wanted to do was play Super Mario Bros.
I never forget this game! I was a bit frustrated at first, but when I gained access to the airport; I was hooked. It was a great way for a 12-year old to learn english as well. :)
Great tribute Johnny, all those memories eh! I entered Algol around the same period and still haven't found my way home yet. Safe to say Chaz, Alis, and gang have definately impacted my life. Loved how you turned this review into an nostalgic road trip going back to the source where it all began. Your passion for the series really radiates man! I just love this type of positive energy people have when talking games, you really can't beat it in my view. MEGA mate :D .
I´m gonna be honest with you, I´ve never been a huge sega fan, but the game looks and feels much, much better than what I had imagined! congrats on the great memories and cherish them like we all do.
Playin' PS1 right now, first playthrough =D I just recently played through Dragon Warrior 1 on the NES, and I gotta say, Phantasy Star hands Dragon Warrior 1 it's ass on every level. I think this might be my favorite 8-bit RPG now =D
i played this game a few years ago as i played ps4. after you play for a while you forget about the graphics and become involved in the story. really good game, highly recommended
was trying this out today it's a simply good game for it's time. Lol, i actually had to make maps for the dungeons today doin that brought back gamer memories.
I really want this on my psn or a EU mega drive cart. this is still my fav game. I play through it every year. I love the music(dont understand why ppl diss it all the time) and it still rocks. even my wife started to love it 2 years ago:) so its a tradition thingy now. trying to finish it with less and less equipment every year:)
Got this for the Wii VC tonight and the audio is a lot slower than usual. It doesn't ruin the game, but its a slight disappointment as I'm used to the tunes at their normal pace...
when ur pissed i think its cuz when u played the game she was a human but then they got diff races so they turned her either into a beast (high ATK) or newman high (TP and MST) i dont know i could really see her ears lol
It wasn't released on the Genesis, it was a Master System title. That said, it's rather rare: the one copy I saw on eBay was going for about $39.
However, there is hope: Digital Eclipse released a Phantasy Star compilation, containing the first three Phantasy Stars, for the GBA! It should prove to be much easier to find. Also worth checking is Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection (?) for the Xbox360--it's got all 4 Phantasy Stars, as well as Shining Force.
Phantasy 1 is for the Sega Master System not Genesis. Although it did get rereleased for Genesis in Japan, the only English version is the SMS original which usually goes for $30 complete. You can buy a Power Base Converter for Genesis to play SMS games, or you can play this in the Phantasy Star Collection for GBA, Wii Virtual Console, or Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection for PS3 and 360.
I grew up with a Master System, and always wanted this game. My parents wouldn't buy it for me because of the price tag on it, it was one of the higher priced games because of the battery back up if I remember right. Later I had a Genesis and got a used copy of Phantasy Star II, which I played through and thought was awesome. Phantasy Star II is what got me hooked to RPGs. Now I have 1 - 4 on the Xbox 360 Genesis collection and will be playing through them in order.

FortWhenTeaThyme 7 months ago

I did have Pokemon on the Gameboy, but that was after I got Pokemon Stadium on the N64 and I wanted to form a team of my own Pokemon so that is where I got my first Pokemon Gameboy game, 18 moonths after I got Ocarina of Time
TBoneTony 7 months ago
Now I have ALLOT of RPGs and ALLOT of Anime compared to what I used to have.
We never forget our first times...
My first time on a Japanese RPG was with Skies of Arcadia for the Gamecube that was originally on the Dreamcast and ported to the Gamecube.
I had to track it down allot before I got it first, and when I did I played it and it was at this moment that I knew that I loved Anime and Japanese RPGs with Anime visuals.
TBoneTony 7 months ago
I was a kid like you once who had nothing much except a few things....
I was around 13 until I had my own console that was an N64.
So I definitely know what it was like to be without any good RPGs.
I know what it was like to be without Anime too, as Anime only appeared on early morning TV shows and I really wanted to tape allot of Pokemon and Dragonball and Yugioh so I could have Anime to watch.

Unlike Final Fantasy Phantasy Star requires skill, luck, and a whole lot of using your head. You can actually DIE in your first encounter, and the story is second to none. Phantasy Star is my favorite series of all time. My only regret is that the ages remakes are japan consoles only.

Bought it for $5 off the Wii shop channel, and I don't regret it for a single moment. Despite how the graphics have aged i think they are still beautiful for 8-Bit. As for the grinding, well it's not that bad but can get tedious. I haven't beat it yet but it's great so far. 8.5/10

Tooke me forever to get out of the cave where u find Noah
cdubmeyer 3 months ago
@cdubmeyer hmm the graphic is actually pretty good in the cutscenes, the 3d dungoens are awsome and the battlescreens isn't too bad either. the only minor complains overall on the graphic might be the overworld.
i really recomand to read story in the booklet before playin the game,
nallenthepuh 3 months ago
@nallenthepuh dude I think the overall graphics over everything is terrible considering these days and I'm a huge debater on games can be great without graphics, I don't care about the graphics in this game but since it is the subject we are talking about I don't know where or what your comparing the graphics too to call them good in certain areas

@gewddoogie Yes, you can defeat the Succubus/Incubus in the governor's mansion. It only gives like 32 EXP or something.
SF3Marky 11 months ago
One thing - did PS1 come with a Map or is it just the map in the instructions manual (the mini-map with clouds over certain areas)? Further, does PS3 have like a poster/map thing? Anyway, it was a great review.
The only problem with PS1 is that you can literally get stuck in the game. If you saved on Motavia, go get the Luverno ship, and cast return somewhere, you wind up in Motavia and can't do anything unless you have the landrover/ice cutter/hover craft.
SF3Marky 11 months ago
Yep, I remember I had this and II, III, and IV. Great game at the time. I remember Sega photocopying and sending me some maps for dungeons. It was awesome. PSII was good, but it was totally tedious to wander the dungeons with tough enemies. PSIII was slow and had poor animations. PSIV was great and the best overall. But I liked PS1 the most. The good old days. I sold the games back then so I could go to school...
SF3Marky 11 months ago
Any ever level up just so you could beat that head thing first time to visit the governor just to see what might happen.

No, what some might see as terrible graphics and tedious level grinding, I see it as a thing of beauty. I know that sounds really nerdy, but I just have always loved the old consoles and have lots of memories playing the super nintendo with my brother and my father when I was 3 and 4. i totally agree with you man.

How much does a copy of PS 1 on Genesis go for?
HistorysMysterys 1 year ago
@HistorysMysterys
Levitz9 1 year ago
@HistorysMysterys
Soukyugurentai 1 year ago
@Soukyugurentai Damn, but there are plenty of sequels on Genesis thankfully.
HistorysMysterys 1 year ago
I grew up with a Master System, and always wanted this game. My parents wouldn't buy it for me because of the price tag on it, it was one of the higher priced games because of the battery back up if I remember right. Later I had a Genesis and got a used copy of Phantasy Star II, which I played through and thought was awesome. Phantasy Star II is what got me hooked to RPGs. Now I have 1 - 4 on the Xbox 360 Genesis collection and will be playing through them in order.
