Here's what i think happened last year. David Stern saw that Boston was doing really well with their trades and likely going to be in the nba finals, so he manufactured a bogus trade to get pau gasol on the lakers without the lakers actually giving up anything of value. Lakers vs Celtics rivalry is renewed, and the NBA cashes in big time. The nba absolutely hates teams like the spurs and the pistons, and there was no way the nba was gonna let either one of those teams make it to the finals.
