@robertrobin10 I agree with you! It really is sad that you don't hear these songs on the radio anymore & very well written!! This song takes me back when I had a Schwinn Sting Ray!! Those were the days!
One of the first rock 'n' roll albums I ever heard was Up To Date by The Partridge Family. 'You Are Always On My Mind' is (arguably) their greatest number. Susan Dey should go down in history as 'the prettiest rock star who never really wasn't'.
@jannyrcobs Up to Date was the first album I ever owned (in 1972!) This song and "I'm On My Way Back home" were my favorites - then and now. Also love "Bandala" from 1970
I used to listen to the 8 track with this song (Partridge Family - Up To Date) while sitting in the back of my dad's VW Bug! thanks for bringing back a fond memory!
I think I was about eleven years old when this aired in 1971. I had a big crush on Susan Dey. Now forty years later at age fifty ...I look Shirley Jones and say, what a beautiful woman! (Susan Dey looks like a little girl) Funny what age does to a person.
Question about this video: how were you able to get a full video clip? Most of the performances shown during each episode were edited down to a couple of minutes at best. This looks like a true concert performance. Amazing.
The joy with which Shirley Jones performs this song brings me back fairly often. It's just so good to see talented people enjoy their craft like that. I share their joy.
That's a great camera angle with Susan Dey in the foreground and David Cassidy/Shirley Jones in the background. Those are 3 really attractive people. Fine song as well.
Donetyathink...music actually had...dare I say it...MEANING?!?!? OMG...people actually, like...LOVED EACH OTHER !! They actually knew who their baby's Dad was!! Hell..my parents never had to do a DNA !!! Love this old stuff!!
i love song so so much i am 15 and i got the show on VHS when i was 6 or 7 and fell in love with then the music of my age is so stupid this is pure heven
@kittybug123 Good for you! It's music that actually just makes you feel good. It's melodic and emotional, and the lyrics are great. The songwriters were just very talented. You restore my faith in the coming generations that all is not lost. There are still those who are sharp and think for themselves and recognize something good, rather than only going with what is current. Thanks kittybug.
I don't think they were the first .. what about THE MONKEYS? The Beatle's had one cartoon, but their voices which was a sit com/music. I'm sure there would be more if I thought about it. The Partridge Family were really good, though, I used to enjoy the show. And yes, I think Shirley Jones is beautiful too. She was a quite a few things when she was younger. Look for the musical CARESELL,, I'm not sure how to spell that.
Got this song. I remember going up to Springfield Mo. when I was a kid and buying those 45's. Mostly @ The long gone KMART on West Sunshine near KY3 TV in 1970 and 1971 with my parents in our 67 Mercury Montclair
Oh no no no! Did he get busted for drunk driving! And here I was thinking he was doing okay. It's ridiculous that I should care so much, but it really upsets me hearing of this. I've loved David Cassidy since I was 10 or eleven (I'm 49 now). I clearly remember the first picture I ever saw of him. I'm from Denmark where PF was never aired, so I saw it for the first time on DVD about a year ago. DC was really special and very talented.
David Cassidy-if there was a picture dictionary beside the words "Teen Idol", David Cassidy's picture would be next to it. I hated it when he got busted for drunken driving in Florida recently.
@RobertJohnM I wore out the grooves on this song when I was 8. Much darker than Sedaka. Maybe his homosexuality fueled it. Even this song, which sounds chipper enough- seems to have a reference to threatening suicide. If anything else, it's a song about obsession- which isn't healthy.
OMG I loved this man so much back in the days. I wanted to marry him and I would count how many more years before I would be legal enough to marry him.
This was such a major part of my adolescence. A wonderful part. The music ...the show........and now all these years later still love it.....maybe more.
Why did this show get cancelled? It was before MTV, before regularly aired videos, and before the internet as we know it. Today, GLEE is to us what The Partridge Family was to the early 1970s.
@55westend It's from the first season, episode 21 "A Partridge up a Pear Tree". The one where Annette O'Toole plays Keith's girlfriend. I love the song - and the episode.
You don't have to be "old" to enjoy this, elainacamille! I'm 30 and I'm crazy about this music. This particular song is possibly my favorite Partridge song, but I love so many of them! David Cassidy was a truly talented singer.
Not sure about the background vocals... guess they are trying to sound like kids... but this is a great song. Maybe I'll grow out my hair like that, I hate getting haircuts!!
oh my God, I have for years try to come up with an explanation whenever I saw this as to Shirley's behavior and THATS IT!! Climaxing on National TV!! I knew the music as good but HOLY CRAP!!! Then she walked off stage, lite a Camel and had a glass of zinfandel. ROFL
I can remember watching re-runs of the Partridge Family. When I had volleyball games that were home games I would go home, b4 the game and watch the Partridge Family, I even done it b4 I left 2 go on road games. I'm 23 now and I still love the Partridge Family.
@GJNCA I'm always in favor of a major/minor workout with a middle eight! This song is easily the chipperest song in the obsession fueled/threatening suicide/love ya forever mode.
I don't care what anybody says, Shirley Jones, is, well.....was anyway....frigg'n BEAUTIFUL. She was hot in Elmer Gantry when she was even younger, but in the Partridge Family, she was just so classy looking & gorgeous. It also goes without saying that Susan Dey was a hotty. As a kid I had a major crush on them both! Along with oddly enough, Mrs Carol Brady, & of course, Princess Leia. Also Joey from Facts of Life, Malory of Family Ties & both sisters from Little house on the Prairie.
@gjc82071 I totally agree with you! I was 11 years old and I was in love with Shirley Jones! She was awesome. She was beautiful! I sure miss those days.
@alexdelrio45 Me too. I used to watch the Partridge Family every day after school on a UHF channel (if you know what that was) I miss/love the era from like 1976-7 to 1984-5. Because of that, I do almost everything I can to kinda live in/lose myself in that era. I watch a Magnavox 25in console T.V., use a rotary dial teleph☎ne, wear 70's style clothing etc, ☞JOKE☜. But I do keep it alive by watching/listening to ♪♫music♬ & movies of the era, & playing classic video games (Atari,C64, etc). ☺
@virnman Actually I did forget. Now that you mention it, I did have a childhood crush on her. Also, Linda Carter/Wonder Woman, & of course, Charlie's Angles (the original), Krissy & Janet from 3's company, Ginger & Mary Ann from Gilligan's Island.............man, I was 1 horny little kid! I seemed to show an interest in women & a particularly young age. :-)
@Tre404 I never mentioned Gimme a Break, but in any event, regardless of whether "Jo's" name was written in full, you obviously knew exactly who I meant.
I just have to say this one corny-ass thing: Seeing Shirley Jones' heartfelt, ebullient and joyful performance here really takes me back to when I was 3 years old, and my mother would play these records and sing along with them (and with me - I knew all the lyrics at that age!), with the same joy... brings a tear. In particular, I can recall her singing (to me) "I've Got Your Love All Over Me." Such a long time ago... haven't seen her in over 20 years, in fact. But that's the way it goes.
I do believe I single-handedly kept Tiger Beat in business buying all the mags with David on the cover lol. I never missed one of his shows and am so thankful to find him here on youtube for my viewing pleasure and also to introduce him to my 14 y.o. daughter.David's still looking good after all these years too and his music still rings true to every teen who had a crush on someone.
This may very well be my favorite Partridge Family song, and I love so many of them. I grew up on the PF Gang, and this brings back such great memories. Beautiful pop / rock, and the harmonies, well, what can you say?
Shit this was my favorite song by them when I was a kid. What great memories playing with my GI Joes and this song jaming on my record player. love it to death.
i am only 15 years old and this music is amazing!! My dad got me into music of this generation and it is a shame to me that the music of my generation is so horrible.. his music is just amazing he starting a timeline of great music to follow. They r just one of those artists where every single song is amazing! Like REO Speedwagon's Hi Infidelity.
I just remember when I was a little boy wishing that I looked like David. Well you know... all he girls just loved him. Man that was a long time ago. I'm 42 now. But I'll always owe it to David for such great memories.
You...u are always on my mind . . how can I ever forget The Partridge Family. . especially David Cassidy. . . I live and breathe The Partridge Family during my teenage growing years...still do and I'm 51 !!
Like the Monkees, the PF had the best studio musicians playing on their records.
Tony Romeo, this song's writer, was hot at the time writing hits for the Cowsills, Lou Christie and others and of course he also wrote, "I think I Love You."
@arlo1967 no they didnt. i was just reading about the guitarist who played and made up the opening riff for last train to clarksville.. his name is louis shelton.
I also got this album when I was 10. I was really inspired to be a musician and performer from watching David Cassidy. I finally got this album on disc some years ago and still play in my car. Interesting that the studio players (especially Hal Blaine on drums) were players for the Carpenters. Karn did not play her own drum parts in the studio. Such honest, refreshing tunes with nice melodies.
1972 i was 9. I broke my leg and everyone was buying me gifts. So i asked my mom to buy me the Up to Date album. This was probably my first "rock" album. I liked this song best along with Ill meet you halfway.
Great song. David had a distinctive, and great voice. They used the very best studio musicians, and background singers in the business. Listen to each instrument, and harmony. Superb. Only Shirley's award winning voice was used besides David's.
@p38p40p51 No doubt the harmony was great. Those 4-5 part harmonies really stick out, & are really tight. Except for country music, sadly, you don't really really hear much vocal harmony in music anymore. Remember the vocal harmonies of bands like....Chicago, The Beatles, Foreigner, America, Boston, Asia, etc? Actually I find that more & more, "singers" are doing less "singing", & instead relying on pitch correction, & auto harmonization electronics/software. Instant talentless "vocalist".
these songs just reminds me of a time in my life when there were no worries...no issues...and hopes of a lifetime! BOY HOW THOSE CHANGED Still love the heck out of em...like comfort food...lol
You all know that David never liked being a pop star. He was into Hendrix, Clapton, and so on. He went on to be the number one star for three straight years. From '71 to '74 he was bigger than anyone. And then along came Shaun.
I remember being in the Partridge Family fan club when I was ten. Wow I loved this show and the music, and had all the albums. Wish I still did, but mom sold them all at a garage sale..ratsssss
One of my favorites too... It took me until I was well into adulthood to realize what it was I liked so much about PF music - and that's it, it was MUSIC. You actually had to be able to carry a tune and negotiate key changes to sing along. I don't think it's a stretch for me to say that in some regards PF taught me to sing.
Thanks for posting, and thanks to all the writers and of course, the artists, David (yeah, I had the crush going to) and Shirley for giving us such fun music! :)
I still have all mine, but now you can get them on CD and they are a much higher quality. I still live and breathe David Cassidy. And I'm a lesbian!!!
if Ggiggles brother could sing like David,he would be very famous!I sure this is another example of a family member filling her bros head with false hope!!1lol
in 1820 a man named fredrick osloft one day he was working in his lab until a ghost came by and killed him the next morning fredrick was nowhere to be seen 100 years later two boys went in the lab as a dare the boys where never seen again where aparently murdered now that u have read this comment tonight when u go to sleep the two boys and fredrick will come and murder you but you can stop this by posting this comment on 5 other videos by midnight im sorry i relly hate these things :'(
To get it on CD first you need to click on the button which pops up next to the Video that says "Download This Video" (If you have RealPlayer) then once you downloaded it go to RealPlayer and then go to Libriary and the song should be on there. Then right click on the song, copy it do Burn CD, then put a blank disc in and burn it. :)
This guy's been going around making negative comments on anything that includes the Partridges. Pretty pathetic. Using the same line shows you are not too bright pal.

i am only 15 years old and this music is amazing!! My dad got me into music of this generation and it is a shame to me that the music of my generation is so horrible.. his music is just amazing he starting a timeline of great music to follow. They r just one of those artists where every single song is amazing! Like REO Speedwagon's Hi Infidelity.

@adamjoey44 Wow, an REO Speedwagon reference...early MTV days. If you like this you should check out the Jackson Five Ultimate Collection.

One of the greatest pop songs written. It has a light bouncy side and a dark deeper side.

I just remember when I was a little boy wishing that I looked like David. Well you know... all he girls just loved him. Man that was a long time ago. I'm 42 now. But I'll always owe it to David for such great memories.

are all of their songs original? i never understood if they were....
meravushke 2 years ago
There is at least one that David did solo xalled "Cherish." David was NOT the original of that, the band named "The Association" were the originals.

When I was much younger, Susan Dey was the hottie. Now that I'm older, Shirley Jones is equally hot.

Like the Monkees, the PF had the best studio musicians playing on their records.
Tony Romeo, this song's writer, was hot at the time writing hits for the Cowsills, Lou Christie and others and of course he also wrote, "I think I Love You."
owensclock 2 years ago 3
The Monkees played their own music, they just didnt write it
arlo1967 2 years ago
@arlo1967 no they didnt. i was just reading about the guitarist who played and made up the opening riff for last train to clarksville.. his name is louis shelton.
tiramisuzi 2 years ago
yes they did, they were a really band, and even had concerts
arlo1967 2 years ago
The Monkees wrote some of their own music. I think one whole album they released was mostly their work.

I liked this song best along with Ill meet you halfway.
journeyquest1 2 years ago 6
Great song. David had a distinctive, and great voice. They used the very best studio musicians, and background singers in the business. Listen to each instrument, and harmony. Superb. Only Shirley's award winning voice was used besides David's.
p38p40p51 2 years ago 17
@p38p40p51 No doubt the harmony was great. Those 4-5 part harmonies really stick out, & are really tight. Except for country music, sadly, you don't really really hear much vocal harmony in music anymore. Remember the vocal harmonies of bands like....Chicago, The Beatles, Foreigner, America, Boston, Asia, etc? Actually I find that more & more, "singers" are doing less "singing", & instead relying on pitch correction, & auto harmonization electronics/software. Instant talentless "vocalist".
gjc82071 1 year ago 3
@p38p40p51 don't forget the finest writers,"Tony Romeo" and a producer that made this a music hit reality " Wes Farrell".

You all know that David never liked being a pop star. He was into Hendrix, Clapton, and so on. He went on to be the number one star for three straight years. From '71 to '74 he was bigger than anyone. And then along came Shaun.

And then along came Shaun. Slow walkin' Shaun, Slow talkin' Shaun. Along came came long legged lanky Shaun!

One of my all-time favorite Partridge Family tunes.
David Cassidy was an amazing singer and the song writers like Romero certainly gave him great songs to show off his great voice with.
Carsurgeon 2 years ago 2
