@360felix I agree. In spite of most of the posts here the actual shape of the Earth isn't obvious to a casual viewer. BTW saying it's round is just about as dumb as saying it's flat. It's roughly spherical. I suspect many ancient people thought it was round and flat like a dinner plate. That's exactly how the moon appears to an observer... round and only one side ever visible to us here.
But there's no denying that for her to say it's too much to think about is just beyond stupid.

@360felix I agree. In spite of most of the posts here the actual shape of the Earth isn't obvious to a casual viewer. BTW saying it's round is just about as dumb as saying it's flat. It's roughly spherical. I suspect many ancient people thought it was round and flat like a dinner plate. That's exactly how the moon appears to an observer... round and only one side ever visible to us here.
But there's no denying that for her to say it's too much to think about is just beyond stupid.

It is not an obvious thing to observe as you had pointed out. I assumed that the lady has not been 'educated' about the structure of earth. Sure, you might see the curvature from high altitudes but there is no way you'd know if it is actually oval in shape. It could be an half sphere, truncated Icosahedron, perfectly round (which it is not) or it could be cylindrical among many other shapes. Your inability to factor these shows your level of IQ.

If you look at the shape of earth in 2D, it's not round but oval since the 2 poles are relatively flatter. IF you observed the curvature of the earth from one high point, there is no way for you to know all about it's structure was what i was trying to get through to him, albeit failing miserably.

People in the past had always assumed that the sun rotates around earth which they thought is the center of universe, that's what the basic observation of sun rising and setting on opposite ends told them.
