Actually the whole subject of the landing rockets disturbing the moon-dust is null and void. They didn't need to use rockets to soften the landing when gliding in on 1/6th Earth's gravity and those four huge things, one on each corner of the lander are shock-absorbers. Easily big enough to take care of a soft touch-down without the use of descent control thrusters.

Stop using what you learned in high-school physics outside high-school.

@TheTruemouse Well, they did need to use the rocket thruster to slow down their descent. It was a constant deceleration. Once they got to about 5 or 6 feet above the surface, if they were going only one or two feet per second, they could cut off the thrusters and drop from there. That much impact was within safe range, but they wouldn't want to do it from much higher than that.

@Astrobrant2 Point is they wouldn't have had the concentrated blast from the comic-book landing the hoax-squad seem to believe they would make, and certainly it wouldn't need the force they describe.

It just seems to me that folks forget this was the 'lunar landing module' it was designed to land on the moon. It wasn't called the 'hovering in the backlot of a poorly budgeted special effects company module'.

The clue is in the name.

In addition, the exhaust bell covered a very large area which spreads that force out a lot, thus minimizing the pressure on the ground. Add to that the fact that in a vacuum, that exhaust comes out at very wide angle.

I think Kaysing was the first to come up with this crater nonsense. I'm hoping hoax nuts will learn just how ignorant he was, in addition to confessing that he concocted this hoax nonsense at the request of an anti-American heroin addict.

Yep, not one person with a technical degree. No masters degrees or PhDs. Kaysing's title of "service engineer" is bogus. He did not have the credentials or experience or training to be hired as ANY kind of technical expert. He left Rocketdyne 3 years before Apollo and started all this crap when a disgruntled GI suggested it to him out of anger toward the government.

So Kaysing did not have to know a thing about engineering to do even that job.

I e-mailed Rocketdyne some months ago, but didn't get a reply. I'll try again.

It looks like you got the information I was looking for, but I'd still like to have more detail. I want a letter from Rocketdyne explaining all of this so I can post it as a reply to Jarrah's triumphant video where he posts the letter listing Kaysing's euphemistic credentials.

One television documentary did label Rene as a physicist. He later admitted that he had no such degree.

I'm not saying "we have" or "we haven't". All I was pointing out is that "proof" can be faked.

Case in point. The age old belief that the Earth was FLAT. Until is was proven, and that means actually sailed around, many people didn't believe the scientists of that time. This argument does NOT have PhDs and other experts on both sides. Not one qualified person in the world, for the last 40 years, has challenged the Apollo missions. This has been done ENTIRELY by uniquely UNqualified conspiracy theorists AND every single argument they have made has been utterly debunked. WE HONESTLY DO NOT KNOW. It's like religion and God...you go on faith. Pictures, film, radio broadcasts, interviews, all the other "proof" for both sides can be faked. We really have NO CLUE. All of the Apollo videos, photos, transcripts, and visual and radar tracking do prove that man landed on the moon, regardless of what the CTs and HBs say. More importantly, the moon rocks themselves, returned by the astronauts and which have been examined by dozens of nations, prove that man really did land on the moon.

If the USSR could have proved that the Apollo landings were a hoax, then it would have been the political coup of the century for them.

We went to the moon. It is not a matter of opinion. It is a fact. There are only people who KNOW and people who don't. It is probably the most thoroughly documented event in history. Not only would it have been utterly IMPOSSIBLE to fake, (especially with the Soviets intently tracking EVERY rocket we ever launched), but every single claim made by the hoaxers has failed.

When faced with that, it is lunacy for anyone to claim a hoax.

They learn that the hoax arguments have all been debunked, and they go on about their business -- we never hear from them again. Of course the fragments of concrete were caused by the heat not the pressure.

The heat evaporates the water in the concrete causing it to expand breaking of fragments. It is a well understood effect.

Holding up mathematics to a conspiracy theorist is like hold up a crucifix to a vampire.

I can understand how the physics might elude them, though. The effect of the thrust on the vessel is entirely different from the effect of the exhaust on the ground. The total thrust, regardless of the size of the nozzle, is applied to the whole ship. IOW, pounds.

The effect on the ground becomes a factor of the area covered by the blast, IOW pounds per sq. inch. Distance, of course, is also a major factor.

There is one default tag in the movie making screen, and that's Pinnacle. When I first uploaded this, (privately), I didn't put in any tags. The Pinnacle was still there. Then I got rid of that and put in the other tags. I wonder if it made these associations a first and didn't change them.

Good job Astro! You're estimates pass the muster. The nozzle looks to be about 3" o.d. and probably has fuel running through the wall for cooling, making the i.d. even smaller and hence, the pressure larger.

I wonder if your (very excellent) videos take so long to load at the beginning because your intro title has all that static in the background. I wonder if that bit, after being rendered, takes up a lot more space than the rest of the video. The progress bar shows it's much further along in the loading than it really is, and I wonder if it bases that on how many bytes have been transfered and it assumes it's loaded much more video than it has...

anyway, time for me to watch this one :p

Hitchcock briefly appeared, himself, or used an image of himself in all his movies. I think I should use his method of putting these early in the video so they don't distract people from the main message. He appears as a crater in one of my videos. A little nostalgia there.
