He should be referring to himself as gay let alone call women 'lesbians', if he doesn't like separatism.
Now, whenever I say that the whole coming out show thing is fucking retarded and people think I'm some gay bashing asshole, I can direct them to this video to see a gay man agrees with me on that.
I remember when I was a teen over thirty years ago hearing on TV the case of a gay teen who was a minor and kicked out of his home for being such, when the police got involved they didn't help the boy saying that they would have done the same thing if they had a gay child. So he became a homeless teen and the parents got away with it.
Even though I am far from being a teen these memories of the past still have influence over my thoughts and feelings for good or bad.
John Waters doesn't understand coming out because he was able to be who he is with his parents still loving and accepting him. It's different when you come from a family who think homosexuality is a sin and as a child you wonder if they will still love you and as a teen you fear being kicked out at an early age to fend for yourself while not being old enough to get a job, or get an apartment etc.
God bless John Waters. His kind of fearless trailblazer seems to get fewer and fewer by passing generations. He's the Irving Thalberg of good bad taste. It broke my heart that Edie didn't live to do one more film with him; I'd dreamed of him casting Larry 'Bud' Melman as Edie's boyfriend. That could have been a riot.
He seems like such a nice, self assured man that is happy being himself. How awesome is that. If we could all be as comfortable with who are are we would each be happier.
I got to meet him briefly at a fan expo in Toronto. Unfortunately the guy who took our picture was an asshole and now I don't have a picture with me and John Waters. Love you Mr Waters
