All Pat Metheny's music is worth listening to, however, this isn't anywhere near his best. Thousands upon thousands of guitarists could play this rock type sound. I always think of Pat having three distinct styles, rock orientated, ambient/world music mood music and jazz. For me, being a jazz and to a lesser extent a fusion fan, I prefer his jazz orientated stuff. His days of real jazz improvised innovation, I feel iare behind him. He has fallen behind the Frank Gambale's of the genre.
For a while, I thought Lyle Mays kinda looks like Paul Gilbert, but when he picked up the guitar and played it, he looks an awful lot like Billy Sheehan with untied hair..lol..only a few jazz guitarist could give rock music justice without sounding like jazz fusion..
When I went to the Imaginary Day tour - I'll never forget the part @1:54 hit me with a wall of sound waves that literally blew me away, backward, into my seat! Now I'm both spiritually, and physically moved by his music!
Nope I am not. Metheny would blow Hendrix to Kingdom Come. The only other guitarist who might could take on Metheny would be Allan Holdsworth but even he might get mowed by Metheny
Do not talk about the quality of artists because it's pointless ... You should talk and think and also feel the music and the meaning of it ... Besides, both of them are or were amazing guitar players ...
@CloneTrooper74 pat might not agree with that. remember pat came up in the jazz tradition- one which emphasizes a very high level of technique and harmonic literacy. Hendrix grew up listening to and playing blues. Pat has been known to admit great admiration for Hendrix's playing. Hendrix played sloppy a lot of the time, but his touch, tone, creativity, overall sense of music were fantastic.
Don't get me wrong though, Pat Metheny is a genius.
Fking love the way Pat gets all 20,000 leagues under the Sea on us, at 5.30 onwards. If that aint Giant squid in the Marianas trench music, i dunno what is. Pat, come on back to London.
"The Roots Of Coincidence" won the 1999 Grammy Award for Best Rock Instrumental Performance. I love that. Pat Metheny said in an interview that the way to really enjoy this track was to listen to it blaring while driving fast. I did that and pretty much had a religious experience! LOL
Hopefully not a religious experience because you nearly met God at that speed. ;) But it would be a good song for pretending to be in a car commercial, zooming around curves and hills at 120mph. ;) ... or 70 in your rattling '98 Taurus. LOL
I think we were going, oh, 85ish. Not too speedy. That's what I would have said back in '98 when the CD came out. Now that I'm older and wiser ... LOL
Don't you realize It's Hanz & Franz...all over again. It's are "Ole Boy Pat " doing a wicked rendition of some German Slick Euro Dance Music, ala KRAFTWORK. Remeber "Trans Europe Express.".. I would have spun this gem in the after hours club I worked in NYC in 1984 at 7AM in the morning,. The frecks would have flipped over this. Start Dancing, cause we're here to PUMP YOU UP.
Nothing like a synth Roland guitar and a masterful musician to make the music seep into your very Being. Thanks for the one that told me what a wonderful instrument is being played--all I know it is so fantabulous. Lifts you right out of sadness and all becomes "alright again" : -) Like a lovly bed time story from the 11th density musicians. : -) Love the faces of pure joy and involvment by the musicians as they put their heart and soul into their playing. Thanks to the ones that share.: -)
This is sooooo awesome, I cannot see how any group and solo artist could out due this team of musicians, They simply reach right to your spirit and help you ascend withour any special meditation. Simply DIVINE. : -) Thanks for putting here for us to view. : -)
The whole band just is one collective harmonious sound. You do not hear this often, the depth of the sound is one of the greatest I have ever heard. It sends me into another dimension, truthfully. Thank you My friend for sharing this. I am hooked. : -)
Buckethead and Pat Metheny are 2 different styles..How do you compare a jazz musician to a avant garde one? Finding the answer to that is like dividng by 0, it just cant happen
How can you compare? Stating Pat Metheny's work is is "too large and to amazing to even compare to Buckethead" is just simple ridiculous. You give a 40$ steak to a vegetarian, they'll puke in front of you. Regardless of how much you like it.
Pat is actually a fan of buckethead, he recommends his work on his website.
very different playing styles and genres, hard to compare the two, Pat is much more musically diverse but that's not really Buckethead's gag. They're both certainly great at their instruments, but I of course like Metheny better.
absolutely amazing. Thanks so much for posting. I work for George Bush and was up all of last night filling trucks with kids, cocaine and trillions of dollars of tax payers money so he can flee the country in case things get ugly but have his basic necessities. This music really cheered me up.
Awesome jam... Pat Metheny literally grew up about 5 miles down the road from where I live.. maybe some of his greatness will rub off on me. Just a superb spacey, precise, moody, heavy, rockin' jam with a beautiful melody on the guitar parts whether verse or solo
Maybe you know Jan Jacobson. She was my manager at Disney a few years ago. She was the one who got his garage caught on fire. Hence the album title american garage
While I like the clip because I remember watching the original broadcast, I don't understand why from 4:41 onward the music is from the album and not the broadcast. Why is that?
its his old Roland 303 guitar formerly used to drive the Synclavier being used to trigger a Roland VG-8. Its mostly the Roland guitar sound here with a slight MIDI sax sample (much like the Synclavier) and a VG-8 patch plus distortion
Pat says he only uses the GR300, I think this is it, has "Greco-Roland" insignia on it--I think this was made by the same company that makes Ibanez guitars
It's not a GR500. I'm a former GR owner and the way it works is there is a special electric guitar with standard pickups as well as a hexaphonic pickup at the bridge. The guitar has a standard output so you could plug it into a regular amp and then a 24-pin thick conductor cable that connected to the roland module. The modules were GR100 (hex guitar) and GR300 (guitar synthesizer). The GR100 can be heard on The Police's "The Other Way of Stopping".
The 300 is all over Metheny's work but if you want a virtual GR300 demo record get Andy Summer's and Robert Fripp's "I Advance Masked". LOTS of GR300 all over that record.
The GR100/300 would sit on the floor and could be controlled by footswitches.
The GR500 was a bigger unit that had a Les Paul shaped guitar with a large tabletop or stand mounted module that was probably 2x the size of the GR300 module. The 500 guitar and synth can be most easily heard on Tangerine Dream's "Force Majeure" - the guitar solo to "Cloudburst Flight" starts with a polysynth sound, fades to gr500 guitar then slams into a hex guitar solo that closes it out.
do a yahoo search on these terms: roland gr- 300 guitar synth brochure
the first link on the search results will take you to a page with photos (actually of the gr-808 which was an upgrade of the gr303 which was the guitar model used with thte gr300 syn [table top unit you mentioned]) at the bottom of that page are links to 1980 brochures with more pix. good luck trying to find one.
i don't think its the gr500. the gr500 has several more control knobs. the gr300 is simpler. plenty of online references to metheny and the gr300. compare gr500 and gr300 photos to the video, the gr300 is the match.
This is the most passionate I've heard him play. An exceptional composition - giving him chance to stretch out his more dramatic side.
