It wasn't a gimmick, Johnathan. I really am a doctor, after retiring from the ring I went to school. I was the ring doctor. The match was Chris Adams and Kerry against Black Bark and Johnny Mantel. Very stiff, brutal match. We did a setup in which Kerry sold injured ribs. I helped him out of the ring. He never went back in to the ring. He was, as usual, on drugs that night. I never saw him sober.
In Broken Bow, Oklahoma, early 80s, I climbed into the ring with the help of my Aunt and hit Kerry Von Erich as hard as I could in the leg. He turned around quickly, looked down, saw me, smiled and gave me a wink.
I was about 4 years old.
I never did "get" wrestling.
My cousin was the fan.

I'm just now finding out how big these people were.
And how many of them have committed suicide in the past few years.
@solomonopoly Drugs, ridiculous work schedules, grueling travel, plus they get beat up every night. Your body can only handle so much. Kerry Von Erich killed himself though. Woman was murdered.
This was not his last match. The last one took place at the Sportatorium on the Friday before he shot himself. I was with him in the ring that night. I was the last to stand in the ring with Kerry. Regardless, this tragedy never goes away for me. He was a really good fellow that just couldn't get straight.
@drjeff1111 Wow !! can you tell me more about that match ?? What was your gimmick, how was Kerry that night...Please, I am a huge fan of Kerry, i want to know.
Growing up, Kerry was one of my favorites...but this shows that he was such an ass! Wtf is up with the mask? forget that he's wearing his "Kerry" jacket...it's still painfully obvious...like MR. America was obviously Hulk Hogan, but I think they were trying to be funny with that one.
Here's the history of the von Erichs: Fritz and Doris von E. had a son, Jack, Jr. (Fritz' real name) who was electrocuted at age six, when he touched the metal door of a trailer, which had a "live" wire touching it, after a storm. David died in Japan, reportedly due to a stomach ailment. Mike commited suicide in 1989 (I believe), by taking an overdose of sedatives. Chris, 21, and Kerry, 33, killed themselves in '91 &'93, respectively, by gunshot. Only Kevin is alive. Fritz died, Doris is alive.
@TheManiacOnWheelsUSA I've heard so many versions of Jack's death. I really don't know which one is true. I do know that it was definitely by electricution.
@mkl62 From Wikipedia: Fritz Von Erich's first son died after accidentally being electrocuted and drowning in a puddle at the age of 7 in Niagara Falls, New York, United States.
I didn't get the info from there. I read it years ago in a wrestling almanac, if I remember correctly. Been watching for 26 years.
@TheManiacOnWheelsUSA I've been watching wrestling for 33 1/2 years. I live in SC and picked up the old Mid-Atlantic and Georgia wrestling shows. I saw Kevin live in Augusta, GA one night. He and Mr. Wrestling II took on and defeated Bryan St. John & Iron Mike Sharpe. In the main event, Terry Gordy defeated Ted DiBiase in a Texas Death Match.
@mkl62 I never got a chance to see the Von Erichs live. And I live in the Boston viewing area, which was one of the hottest syndicated TV audiences for World Class. It always drew great numbers in the ratings, mostly because it came after WWF programming.
@TheManiacOnWheelsUSA Because it came after wwf? all WWF showed was big names vs jobbers. At least world class had matches where you didn't know who would win everytime.
Well, mask or no, anyone who watched the Von Erich brothers would have known their moves and physiques the instant they showed up. Wasn't this match held after some sort of "suspension" Kerry recieved and was not supposed to be wrestling for awhile? It's been a long time since I've followed wrestling, so don't get upset if I'm not correct. Just wondering about it.
Hi Guys & Gals. Greetings from Dublin Ireland. I wish to tell you that I served as a UN solider in Lebanon in the summer of 1985 and can tell you that the one thing that the local kids lived for was to watch Kerry on the TV. He touched there lives and was great to give them a littel dream. The fact that his name was the same as a county in Ireland got my attention. But got to know a legend. So sorry to hear he passed away. So you guys remember he made an impression on young kids. Take care All
I believe 1986 or 87.Kerry lost half his foot in a motorcycle accedent and was out of action for almost a year. Shortly after his comeback he lost the WCCW belt to AWA champion Jerry Lawler in a unification match in Chicago. It was then that he went to the WWF. Kerry wasn't that old when sighned with Vince, he had just been through a lot, and was too loyal to his sick in head father. It's a real shame, by all accounts he was a good guy.
what promotion was this? I guess I should ask which shitty indy promotion this was? their heel is Sal Bellomo and his manager is some clown dressed up as the Grand Wizard?!?!?! poor Kerry he deserved so much better! I always thought Kerry shouldve been given a long title reign as NWA champ he was so much better than that creepy ugly Ric Flair, Kerry was so much better looking and he had a way better body, hair and all around look than that ugly creep Flair, yuck I always hated Flair :(
Unfortunately, Kerry was unreliable and on drugs at the time. He was a substitute for his brother David who was reliable but had died on a tour in Tokyo.
Didn't David die of drugs too? I saw a Von Erich documentary on WWE 247 where Wild Bill Irwin who was on tour with David and stayed at the same hotel said that David died of a stomach rupture from eating too much. That sounded fishy to me. what's your opinion on this?
That can't actually be proven because the official report is acute enteritis which is a severe inflammation of the intestines. It depends on who you believe. Most guys in those days were users, however, David was always reliable and at least seemed to be very smart about the business. That could not be said of the other boys, unfortnuately.
Good question Aliciadom!! Why did he have the mask on. Was it really Kerry Von Erich behind the mask? And what was Woman's real name anyway? I think she is in heaven now.
Of course it really was Von Erich. Kerry had his foot amputated so he walked with a noticable limp and he taped his fingers.
You can clearly see "Woman's Choice" with taped fingers and a limp, not to mention he's wearing his Von Erich robe which you couldn't buy off the street in 1993.
I did some reading that says it's legit, but I remember a video with Warrior where he quickly said it was kayfabe. Makes one wonder if it is one of the best sold kayfabes of all time or if Warrior was just full of it in that interview.
On a related/unrelated subject, Kerry Von Erich's daughter that is in TNA is MEGA HOT.
In any case, Warrior wouldn't be someone I would tend to believe. Most others from the family to everyone else acknowledge that Kerry's foot was amputated after the bike accident.
didn't Kerry's boot come off in a match and you could actually see that he had no foot? I'm not sure who was the opponent but it could've been Jerry Lawler. Kerry had such bad luck. If he would've had any luck at all he would've been bigger than that ugly Ric Flair and perhaps just as big as Hulk Hogan in the world of pro wrestling.
Actually, it was a match with Colonel DeBeers, I think I heard. You know, when Vince was gearing up for his big expansion, so the story goes, he wanted Kerry to be the face of the company. But when word got to him of how unreliable he was, he decided to go with Hogan.
I don't remember what source that story came from. I read it awhile ago. As I said, that was just how the story went. It's probably floating around somewhere else...
From what I have read when Hogan was courted into going to the WWF (late 1983), Kerry was still in the middle of a hot program with the Freebirds. SO I think it was more than just McMahon changing his mind.
That sounds right. I'm just disputing that he wanted Kerry to have the spot he gave to Hogan. There is no doubt he wanted the VOn Erich so he could take over the Texas market.
I certainly am only passing along what I had heard. Kerry and David were both charismatic guys capable of moving the crowd. I heard through a friend involved in the business that McMahon wanted David as a heel. I can't say how true that is, but that's what the rumor was.
We're both speculating, but then it is interesting to suppose.
That's true. But it's as alot of the wrestler's have said... None of the other promoters could compete with Vince McMahon. In fact, the one who held out the longest was one of the better respected but lesser known regional promoters, Don Owen. He held out until 1992. Other than that, they all fell in the 80s through their own poor booking and lack of business acumen.
yeah you're right Kerry's daughter is gorgeous. Kerry himself was a beautiful young man. I've seen tapes of him wearing shades and a headband and the kid looked better than any rock star I've ever seen. And he had a perfect body, even better than Rick Rudes' and Lex Lugers' he looked like a golden God. I don't know why in the world the NWA didn't keep its title on Kerry. He could've competed with Hogan, the NWA fans wanted a champ they could admire and look up to not like that ugly loser Flair
Who knows where Kerry's career could have gone if he didn't have a drug problem and killed himself? One thing many Flair fans forget to point out is Sting. Though Sting sucks with promos, Flair is nothing without Sting.
I've always hated Flair. I think the main reason NWA/WCW failed was because Flair was such a shitty champ. In the 80s Flair was always champ but he sucked, he was wimpy and cowardly, whereas in the WWF Hogan was a great and dominant champ. I think either Kerry or Sting or either of the Steiners would've made a better champ than Flair. Flair matches were always the same and he always won by some lame trick or got disqualified or some other kind of stupid "Dusty finish".
No doubt Flair was a legend, remember when someone threw him into the ropes he would run full speed n jump into it upside down n slingshot himself upright n hed be on the outside of the ring ropes.Pretty ballsy move,n i still havent seen someone do it.
@edvhou812 Warrior said it was legit. He said that Kerry tried to "kayfabe" it... in other words, Kerry didn't tell ayone about it and acted like the leg amputation never happened.
None of the other wrestlers knew about it. I guess Kerry didn't shower after matches... which is kinda gross.
He (and most of the von Erichs - but him in particular) had superstar written all over him. Incredible potential that was cut way too short, whether the motorcycle accident caused the addiction or not it was a terrible ending. Only surpassed in tragic by Nancy/Woman's ending - holy crap this a collection of lives with bad and WORSE endings.
He totally messed up....take a look at woman, she is following him around the ring trying to cover his name up with her arms. This is low budget wrestling, lets not give these geniuses to much credit...
Why does everyone think he wore the jacket as an accident? Come on people we've all seen matches like this.If it was an accident why did all of the backstage guys tell him to come on, why didn't someone stop him or even yank it off. Look at Woman, referee,or the opponents face, no surprise. Remember JYD having to leave MidSouth and then he comes in wearing a mask,(Stagger Lee).It was scripted this way people.
@dossmanos8 Morbidly funny how the more things were revealed to be "fake" the more brutal, dangerous, and tragedy written professional wrestling became.
Yeah the Jacket ruined to whole secret gimmick, I noticed the Kerry on his jacket before I read the info. Woman was his manager and are now both sadly no longer with us.

Why did he need pain pills for having no fooot? I would assume that having a stump instead of a foot would more of an annoyance than painful. Unless of course he never had it seen too and just thought it would grow back, which I wouldn't be surprised at....
you do realize that when ur foot is amputated bones are cut off, nerves are cut, a part of ur body is being chopped off...It's liike with any operation where you have recurring pain afterwards except for the fact that it can't heal like any normal operation would...
you know its a shame, how this country treats people that have drug addictions, like criminals.. Kerry von erich lost his fucking foot, he was a pro wrestler...he needed those drugs/help with drug addiction..they were gonna put him in jail for forging perscriptions????

did you read my whole quote??? i was stating that the wrestling business is so unkind to gay people that sometimes they turn to suicide. hellooooo??? i am gay and proud of it dumbass.
The legendary Von Erich family has been confirmed to be inducted into this year's WWE Hall of Fame. Other names confirmed for induction this year include "Stone Cold" Steve Austin, Ricky "The Dragon" Steamboat, "Cowboy" Bill Watts, and Terry & Dory Funk, Jr.
the von erichs have been yanked and replaced by Koko B. Ware for 2009. Rumor has it they will be inducted in Dallas as wrestlemania might be in the cowboys new stadium in 2011 or 2012 and both the von erichs and freebirds will be inducted at the tarrant county convention center.
the father of the von erich's should be ashamed of himself for not recongizing the problems of his children and being in total denial about what they might be caught up in...comon you dont lose this many kids to suicide unless your a f*cked up parent who has no business raising children
i think he had to wear the mask because he was not supposed to leave the state of texas after his drug arrest. i'm not exactly sure, but it seems like i remember reading that in one of the smart sheets. i mean if he was trying to pull off some sort of angle, he wouldn't have worn the "Kerry" jacket. He wanted peole to know who he ws i guess, but had to put reasonable doubt in the mind of the state of texas.
it WAS pretty silly of him to wear the jacket. and that's not speaking ill of the dead. that's just fact. if he was going to wear his own gear, fine. but the mask just looks BAD.
From the court records which are now public information, Kerry was looking at a max of 5 years in medium security with time off for good behavior and enrolling himself in an outside prison sponsored drug rehab program after he went inside. In all, he would've been out after two years had he complied with the courts wishes.
He worked under Salvatore Bellomo during an early to mid 80's WWF run and then later under this gimmick as Wildman Bellomo in ECW and other eastern Indy's during the 90's.

He could've competed with Hogan, the NWA fans wanted a champ they could admire and look up to not like that ugly loser Flair
gonzomoya420 2 years ago
Who knows where Kerry's career could have gone if he didn't have a drug problem and killed himself? One thing many Flair fans forget to point out is Sting. Though Sting sucks with promos, Flair is nothing without Sting.
edvhou812 2 years ago
I've always hated Flair. I think the main reason NWA/WCW failed was because Flair was such a shitty champ. In the 80s Flair was always champ but he sucked, he was wimpy and cowardly, whereas in the WWF Hogan was a great and dominant champ. I think either Kerry or Sting or either of the Steiners would've made a better champ than Flair. Flair matches were always the same and he always won by some lame trick or got disqualified or some other kind of stupid "Dusty finish".
gonzomoya420 2 years ago
Well, to be honest, I like Ric Flair... He was great in the ring and on the mic. But I guess you just look at it a bit differently than I do.
lawrence142002 2 years ago
No doubt Flair was a legend, remember when someone threw him into the ropes he would run full speed n jump into it upside down n slingshot himself upright n hed be on the outside of the ring ropes.Pretty ballsy move,n i still havent seen someone do it.

@edvhou812 Warrior said it was legit. He said that Kerry tried to "kayfabe" it... in other words, Kerry didn't tell ayone about it and acted like the leg amputation never happened.
None of the other wrestlers knew about it. I guess Kerry didn't shower after matches... which is kinda gross.

@Robohump
He did shower. Just wore his boots when he did it

great wrestling family - one of the sadest and most tragic stories of all time
ProCorona 2 years ago 2
He (and most of the von Erichs - but him in particular) had superstar written all over him. Incredible potential that was cut way too short, whether the motorcycle accident caused the addiction or not it was a terrible ending. Only surpassed in tragic by Nancy/Woman's ending - holy crap this a collection of lives with bad and WORSE endings.
jimzazz 2 years ago 2

Not only that, but he's still wearing his trademark boot with the tassles.

Why did he need pain pills for having no fooot? I would assume that having a stump instead of a foot would more of an annoyance than painful. Unless of course he never had it seen too and just thought it would grow back, which I wouldn't be surprised at....
GazGlitter10 2 years ago
you do realize that when ur foot is amputated bones are cut off, nerves are cut, a part of ur body is being chopped off...It's liike with any operation where you have recurring pain afterwards except for the fact that it can't heal like any normal operation would...

I remember the Von Erichs so well. They all had such incredible talent. Addiction is a terrible thing.
There are so many nasty comments here. I can't believe what I read sometimes. For those who judge, remember; There but for the grace of God go I.

The legendary Von Erich family has been confirmed to be inducted into this year's WWE Hall of Fame. Other names confirmed for induction this year include "Stone Cold" Steve Austin, Ricky "The Dragon" Steamboat, "Cowboy" Bill Watts, and Terry & Dory Funk, Jr.
roncorkern 3 years ago
the von erichs have been yanked and replaced by Koko B. Ware for 2009. Rumor has it they will be inducted in Dallas as wrestlemania might be in the cowboys new stadium in 2011 or 2012 and both the von erichs and freebirds will be inducted at the tarrant county convention center.

Eh, the Von Erich's were announced at this week's Smackdown tapings. They weren't yanked.

the father of the von erich's should be ashamed of himself for not recongizing the problems of his children and being in total denial about what they might be caught up in...comon you dont lose this many kids to suicide unless your a f*cked up parent who has no business raising children

i think he had to wear the mask because he was not supposed to leave the state of texas after his drug arrest. i'm not exactly sure, but it seems like i remember reading that in one of the smart sheets. i mean if he was trying to pull off some sort of angle, he wouldn't have worn the "Kerry" jacket. He wanted peole to know who he ws i guess, but had to put reasonable doubt in the mind of the state of texas.
TyTyMoney 3 years ago
Sorry that's ridiculous and...NO....the mask comes off 1 minute into the bout.....I don't think authorities can be fooled by a wrestling mask.

damn, u guys are harsh to each other. lighten up.
it WAS pretty silly of him to wear the jacket. and that's not speaking ill of the dead. that's just fact. if he was going to wear his own gear, fine. but the mask just looks BAD.

Kerry had been released by WWE and was facing felony drug charges when he sadly took his own life with a pistol he had given his father in 1993.
unlvbball 3 years ago 3
I heard he had a fake foot even in his WWF/E run Lost his foot in a motorcycle accident.
And thus that caused him to commit suicide because he was depressed over losing his foot.
B44501xRacerEX 3 years ago
He lost his foot a whole 7 years before he committed suicide. Even though that was probsbly very depressing, I doubt that's the reason he did it.
ScrotumCancer 3 years ago
He lost his foot a long time ago, before entering WWE. He actually wrestled in WWE with a prosthetic foot, believe it or not.

Kerry was going to jail...but what sentence was he looking at?
ShawnVanAngle 3 years ago
From the court records which are now public information, Kerry was looking at a max of 5 years in medium security with time off for good behavior and enrolling himself in an outside prison sponsored drug rehab program after he went inside. In all, he would've been out after two years had he complied with the courts wishes.

Who was Kerry's opponent in this match?
MikeyMikeisMe 3 years ago
He worked under Salvatore Bellomo during an early to mid 80's WWF run and then later under this gimmick as Wildman Bellomo in ECW and other eastern Indy's during the 90's.
