  • There's an important lesson for young people that this video teaches very well: If you want to connect with your audience and draw them in, you have to show them that you enjoy performing. Wilcox does this very well.

  • MAESTRO!

From the 514. Please do a show here!!!!!

  • Maestro!

  • Is that open E tuning?

  • He's in Open G (DGDGBD). Lately he often tunes his guitar 1 semitone flat, so it will sound like Gflat. (See my post from 5 months ago).

    WILCOX ROCKS!!!!

  • Ah... That makes sense. Open G is a decent slide tuning. Thanx.

  • Hey Texas,

you gave us george bush, and you dare talk about lame?

  • My Texan friend... if you don't like him, that's fine, you don't have to be rude. And heiro-fella underneath me, great that you seem to agree with me, but the f-word is not neccesary.

  • Who has friends (?) in TX????

  • fuck you

  • I concur with heiroglyphics.

  • A true Canadian legend, and possibly our answer to the Greatful Dead, David Wilcox is continuouly touring, and plays in local venues that anyone can attend. I've seen him several times, he's an under-rated guitar player, and a true Canadian treasure. Keep on rocking David.

  • playing calgary tonight =D

  • lame in comparison, i'm afraid.

  • I love COX!

  • Just found out he's playing the Salmon Arm music festival on August 16/17 - you bet I will be there - with my good friend of 20 yrs who is prob one of his biggest fans - can't wait! ;.)

  • Cant wait for him to come back to halifax!

  • woot, david wilcox ftw

  • So much joy on his face!! Love his music

  • David is one expressive kick-ass player! It's gotta be that Canadian beer up here!

  • Dave wilcox is the best beer drinkin', skirt chase'in party around here. Canada's the best place to live and party....Amen

  • I could not agree more.

  • @cantbeatcanada2 my uncle brought him to Sudbury, Ontario but Wilcox said in order to play there he would need two 26ers of JD

  • @shaners12345 My brother went to Queens Univ. and was on Student councell back in the 80's and they brought David in to play and my brother said it was in the contract to have a bottle of Jack Daniels for him. He is a great performer

  • @uptonman666 wouldn't be without JD!!!!

  • FUCK ALL HATERS

  • Can any one tell me wich tuning this song is in? Also what other tunings does dave use? Is this the same tuning for hot hot papa?

  • The tuning is Mars-major, David's own creation...good luck!...I believe Hot, Hot, Papa is in Neptune-minor?...no they are the same...no?...sorry...the three guitarists here in the room all disagree...Fair play to you ed563, if you can replicate this and some of his energy...you have good taste in music!

  • Sorry, my friend who typed that in is a huge Wilcox fan, slide player, thought it was in the spirit of David's sense of humour, didn't think it would offend you personally, sorry.

  • In the song hot hot papa, eADGBE strings are re-tuned to what?

  • Sorry, I wasn't one of the three guitarists in the room. I called my friend....but he left to tour this morning. If no one else gives you answer, I'll still send it on to you when I hear from him, at your mail. I know he definitely lowers the E string in tuning, like a lot of old-style delta/slide players, but I'm sure you knew that....

  • 10-4, Roger that, I'll be on standby, waiting for further conformation.... Over.

  • @SPAZZOBOXER i believe hot poppa is a open c tuning way down low

  • I think this song is in "Open G"(D G D G B E).

The only problem is.... Wilcox often tunes 1 step flat, so if you want to play along with this recording you'll have to tune as follows:

(Dflat,Gflat, Dflat, Gflat,Bflat, Eflat). Let me know if this makes any sense. I play "Bad Apple" in dropped D (D A D G B E). You can play the rhythm part using "2 string chords" using only the 5th 6th strings. If you need any other help just let me know. (If this advice sucks - let me know!!) WILCOX ROCKS!!

  • Sorry about the presumptious guitar lesson, (I thought I was replying to "ed563", didn't mean to bore everyone else with suspect advice).

    Oh Yeah - WILCOX ROCKS!!!

  • Thanx man, makes sence. I'v used that tuning before with my slider. I'll Try tuning a half step down also to get the "flat" u were talkin about. Thanx again.

  • Hey ed563,I just listened to Hot Papa on CD, it's in the key of C. The only way I can fake the intro is to tune 6th down to C, 5th down to G, 4th down to C. (Don't know what to do with the rest yet.) Try strumming 2 string chords on 5&6, and 5&4 strings with the CD.

God only knows how to do the lead stuff!?

  • LoL, ok. I'll try it out tomorrow. Bed time for me. Thnx. Let me kno what the other strings r tuned to when u get it firuged out. Adios.

  • (That last string in Open G is supposed to be D, not an E - obviously. Must have been late when I posted that.0

  • this is the same guy back in 87 kitchener waterloo club called coronet on victoria street where they carried him on stage at 11 pm 2 hours late did 2 songs threw up and cancelled the show hahahahahahah dave send me my 10 dollars will ya i want my money back

  • If you don't have anything nice to say; shut up.

  • Ohhh! Please!David rocks man.Get a life there pal!David's got more of an appeal than you've got in your lil' toe!(smile).

  • Hey buddy, what's with the swearing and violence?!? If you don't like Wilcox that's OK, just calm down. You obviously aren't a real guitar player, because you know what?- EVERY REAL GUITAR PLAYER IN THE WORLD RESPECTS ARTISTS LIKE WILCOX. Wilcox has absolutely mastered his instrument and taken it to a new level in his type of music. He copies no one and does a lot of stuff that is technically difficult yet still very musical (you probably don't know what I'm talking about,) and...

  • your a fag this man is a ICON he is soo good the looks only works for stone cold you do know that wrestling is fake right? but there is nuthin fake about this man DAIVD WILCOX he is GODLY

  • yo fuck head dont disrespect davie wilcox your the one watchin him on youtube loser he's more famous then your geek ass

  • I remember when I was younger,my eldest brother would listen to David.I grew up listening to him;to this day I have loved David Wilcoxs music.I will probably jive to his music until I am old and grey!!Rock on David!!

  • I love this Cat!!! Man he is the Canadian George Thorogood in his own Slass. I saw him back in the late 80's!!!

  • this is a good song except do the bearcat is better

  • oooohhhhh yeahhhhhh!

  • Wilcox is the man! seen him twice in concert he's awesome! check him out!

  • Remember gettin wrecked to the man?... I wish I could go back???.. The one who would be at your bar no matter where you were in Canada?.. The king!!!!

  • Makes me home sick now...live in NY, and wanna come back to Toque town eh!!! I will never love another Country more than CANADA!!!! I am a true hose head eh!!

  • Loves the great Canadian key of Eh!

  • what a great 18th birthday I had in 1978 seeing this guy at his prime at the El Macambo

  • Prime? this guy hasn't even Peaked

  • hypnotizin boogie is a great song fools

  • hahaha David Wilcox is so wacky, I love him. A Great guitarist! I love when he starts the 12 bar run haha he's just groovin along.

  • wilcox is 1 scary lookin bastard

  • fuck ya candian im canadian

  • Nice mouth! You should have said, "I am a white trash, trailer park excuse for a Canadian". Fool!

  • NO U!

  • I'm seeing him tonight!

  • He's great live but in intimate settings, I don't think he would be good in a large venue, this is why he never really got far. I don't think he liked making videos or playing at large venues. Got to be up close and personal with the people. He's more of an entertainer than a musician. He's probably the best "Bar Band" that ever lived.

  • seen this guy twice in thunder bay, ontario! totally awesome shows both times.LEGEND!!!

  • aha wilcox is the man i seen him and kim michele's live in collingwood a couple years back ahah the weed and booze went around there like crazy ahah best consert ever lol

  • I have to see this guy live - he's amazing!

  • thats why Wilcox is Canadian I guess,,he tought Bonny to use the slide ,and never said shit..

  • dude, that's my dad

  • Nigwump,

I feel you should be very proud of your father. Learn from all the bad but be proud of his contribution he has brought to not only Canadian music, but music in general. My question for you... why has he not don a symphony session. Everyone has. Why not him???? Can you please ask him

  • lol that's so not your dad... well it could be if you were simon wilcox, but clearly you're not ! haha

  • he looks a bit like rodney dangerfield

  • #1 Americans arent trashing the Canadian David Wilcox because the American Wilcox is folk easy listening music.

#2 The Canadian David Wilcox sacres young children and animals alike.

#3 WOW what a clip AMAZING!

  • American who? we had lighthouse, you got edison lighthouse, we had crowbar now whos crowbar? hell if you checked your dates and history you would see when it comes to music theres a whole fracking planet of talent just waiting to be renamed to a spitbox blurbfarting lipflappin bunch of ball tuggers down here. Hell there even rippin off DISCO of all things.

  • Get sober before you answer a post! David Wilcox (the American) did NOT steal his name from the Canadian Wilcox. He is a respected musician in his own right. You commented on a post of someone who learned to play Bad Apple listening to Wilcox when he was seven & saw him in concert at Ontario Place when 11 years old. If you are going to make comments at all, try not to show everyone what an uninformed fool you really are. You are one disgraceful Canadian.

  • The greatest!

  • There's nobody but nobody like Wilcox.

  • What an AWESOME entertainer!!!

Someone buy that man a drink :)

  • True root Canadian blues at its best!that was great!

  • Just an absolutely brilliant player. Too bad he never got the kind of recognition he deserved. He was a bit of a wild man back in his day. Now he's a kinder, gentler guy, but it isn't the same David Wilcox as we knew and loved back in the 80s. This tune is my favorite of all his songs. Thanks for sharing!

  • I'm glad to have seen this, as I have been playing it with the wrong tuning (standard) for more than 20 years. He lowers both A and E strings down to G and D respectively. Now I'm going to do it his way!

I watched Dave do Johnny B. Goode lying on his back for an encore at Kelly's Boogie Parlour back in the early 80's, and it was amazing...hehe. (Mind you, I think he was toast at the time...)

  • this muthafoya ROCKS...glad to hear a new guy that kills...thanx...what tufftone!!

  • Just plain awesome. Thanks for connecting me to this vid.

  • I am glad I see how he plays. I love playing Wilcox's songs in guitar.

This is like a guitar lesson.

    Thanks for posting this one
