John's 1st solo was overall better, but I believe Slash showed the blues-rock feeling better in his solos. Mayer's solos were cleaner, probably because he learned from the best, SRV.

Music isn't a competitive event! John and Slash were asked if they'd like to jam with ZZ Top, and they accepted. John and Slash play different genres of music: John plays mostly blues/blues based music, while Slash plays primarily hard rock. John's playing style fits well with ZZ Top, but if the tables were turned and John and Slash were asked to sit-in/play with a hard rock band, which player sounded and played better would be different.

Sounds to me like Slash is trying to rock more than blues on this. For his stuff that's fine, but for ZZ Top, you gotta bring the blues like Billy. It's hard for a blues fan to not have mixed feelings about John Mayer. On the one hand he's a great blues player when he wants to be, on the other, he plays douchey pop music. Would you make up your mind please, so we can either love you or hate you?

@jonathan1stewart I think John Mayer is a bluesman, he has to make poppy music to make money...It's not that he hates pop music, but if you listen to his interviews you'll notice that he'd rather be making blues all day long ;)

Music isn't a competitive event! John and Slash were asked if they'd like to jam with ZZ Top, and they accepted. John and Slash play different genres of music: John plays mostly blues/blues based music, while Slash plays primarily hard rock. John's playing style fits well with ZZ Top, but if the tables were turned and John and Slash were asked to sit-in/play with a hard rock band, which player sounded and played better would be different.

I've heard better John Mayer but let's face it. ZZ Top is a fun band but really not talented. Slash isn't even on the level as local bar talent! He make's many mistakes but the crap he plays is distorted and loud and often covers those misses.

I'll not slate Mayer cos he hasn't been playing this song for 30 years but please, don't talk crap about ZZ. They may have sold out, they may have got old but they sure as hell were and are seriously talented. That's why your boys are having trouble up there. B-)

I'm all speed when the song calls for it, but if you ever take a listen to John live, I mean a real listen, does he ever miss a note? The precision he has is remarkable and undervalued. Two blues players I wanna see on stage are John Mayer and Joe Bonamassa! That would be a KILLER show... people would come just to watch them play the guitar. They wouldn't even have to sing and the show would still be worth it! The solos in that show would be legendary haha

Let's be fair here. This is NOT the blues, this is rock n roll. It may be bluesy rock, it's still rock. ZZ Top and Slash are rock LEGENDS. They have staple rock songs with guitar solos that everyone and their brother can sing by heart. Their music will be the standard for rock n' roll forever. Having said that, it's fair to recognize that they are NOT in their prime anymore. John Mayer is a good guitar player who is still young and eager and full of energy. He better outshine these guys!

I would like to retract part of my statement however. I just saw Slash live yesterday, and he definitely IS STILL IN HIS PRIME!! FUCK!! That show was absolutely, in every way, completely fucking kick ass rock n' roll!!!!! Slash is better than ever these days. I was blown away.

Sounds to me like Slash is trying to rock more than blues on this. For his stuff that's fine, but for ZZ Top, you gotta bring the blues like Billy. You can't just be a rock or heavy metal guitarist with a name and hang with the likes of Billy gibbons. It's like "rock gods" going to NYC to the Iridium when Les was alive and getting their asses handed to them by a 90 y/o man!
