not every single raccoon have rabies... they have the same chance of getting rabies then all the other "cute" wild animal you encounter... plus you would know if the raccoon have rabies because it would act all ape shit.
im not sure if this works with racoons too, but i heard that if you touch a birds babies then they will throw them out of the nest because your scent is on it... :(
When I was 16 I found a raccoon in our garage so I let my dog out. I didn't know the raccoon had 7 babies too. The next morning, my dad told me there were half a dozen dead baby raccoons in the yard, so he started beating my dog. My dog yelped the hole time and got hit by a car two days later and died. So now, whenever I see a raccoon, I try to kill it. I killed 7 last year.
That was the cuttest raccoon. They are adorable. And don't you think we know we can get diseases from them you idiot duh. who doesn't know that. the point is that he's cute.
Jeese, people actually think these animals are so vicious or automatically get rabies at a certain age or something. Raccoons RARELY carry any disease and are quite docile
All those things are stigmas made up by people who just hate them for whatever reason.
@MischiefMeerkat people hype up the whole disease thing with racoons because it makes people fear them, and pest control companies can make a lot of money from that fear. peoples pet dogs and cats are more likely to give them a harmful disease than a racon or a rat. people just demonize wild animals in order to justify cruelty and make money.
Racoons are one of the most fun animal to raise and release into the wild. Most people say that you can't release them once you raise them, but you can. Racoons are very capable of surviving on their own after rehab. They don't need to learn hunting skills or flying, or whatever else most animals have to. They are scavengers. They simply eat what they find. Not a lot of training needed for that. Just don't handle them like a pet and they end up fine. Been raising them for years.
They're welcome to live here, I just laugh at human being feeling bad for "taking all the land which belongs to them". And sorry I think they're disgusting, option.. they're disease ridden, FACT. I'm sure you wouldn't cuddle with a road-kill eating Turkey Buzzard, so let me judge you a little for having an opinion!
@helianimal dogs can give you Weil's, Toxicarum, worms, Murine Typhus, and a whole host of nasties yet I doubt you bash people for liking them. and humans are riddled with diseases FACT. And I find humans to be discusting. :P
@helianimal Racoons aren't rodents! They belong to the order Carnivora (even though they are omnivores they are technically in the order Carnivora), whereas rodents like rats and mice belong to the order....here comes the kicker, you ready?....Rodentia! Maybe learn a tiny bit about biology before you claim an animal is "rodent" when you don't know what the hell it is! Then again, you probably think rabbits and hares are "rodents" too, when they're not...*shakes head*
Even if they put the baby raccoon back where they found it, its mother might abandon it when she smelled human scent on it. Some wild animals do that.
In California, there are plenty, they go from home to home at night looking for food. It is a shame, as we humans have taken all the land which also belongs to them. I have plenty that comes visiting every night. So there are plenty around. It is best just to watch them, but not too touch them. They are so adorable, but you have to do the right thing for their sake. The Mohter will growl at you, unless she gets to know you, then she is okay with her kits around you. Just don't touch!
Very correct. When caretakers release animals back into the wild, it is only on the back of them knowing exactly what to do and not to do to ensure the animal's ability to re-enter the wild successfully. If an untrained individual removes an animal from the wild they can never released it back into the wild or the animal will most likely die upon re-entry.
So wonderful to see! there is still hope for the human race :) And the mother would not have rejected it, only a few species, including misguided humans act in that fashion.

Another ridiculous statement from you as U.S. citizens had no say over where they were born. I also see no need to leave my country because some tree-hugger thinks we ought to give all our land back to the wild animals.
Logic is obviously not your strong point. The more statements you make, the more ridiculous you sound - keep talking.
anyhow, we are arguing semantics. Yes, SOME raccoons are violent/feral. This is the exception, and NOT the rule, period. End of story.
Clean your yard, keep the grubs out, and they wont habitate there unless you have a den-worthy shed, etc. In which case, you check it regularly. Problem solved. Don't want to get bitten? watch where you walk, dont step in a males path in peak season. done.
"Yes, SOME raccoons are violent/feral. This is the exception, and NOT the rule,"
It is IMPOSSIBLE to know which raccoons those are until one is attacked and then it is too late and the harm is done.
"...period. End of story."
This is a recurring theme in your posts as you seem to think that your OPINION is fact and that somehow you are entitled to having the last word on everything.
"Clean your yard, keep the grubs out, and they wont habitate there unless you have a den-worthy shed, etc...Problem solved"
This has not been our experience. Raccoons are creatures of habit and they keep coming back to our yards for reasons that are known only to them. They even have a habit of climbing on people's rooftops and congregating there for reasons which are not understood.
Animals do not always reject their offspring if another species touches them leaving a scent. My cat had 2 litters of kittens and with each delivery she allowed us to aid her and handle the kittens. Never once has she ever rejected a kitten. Although raccoons could be quite different because they are not domesticated animals.
Read my quote again - I said if it was full grown it probably would. And yes, they are extremely vicious when they decide to be. You don't know much about raccoons if think differently.
they are vicious if cornered, threatened, or if their young are threatened. Period. Raccoons deal with fear via nipping/biting, as many other animals do. This does not make them vicious inherently.
If she forcibly held an adult , wild racoon, sure she would get bitten. A domesticated/tame one, not as likely. If it was simply walking by, it would very , VERY likely not attack, but rather avoid or run away.
A little research goes a long way. I know plenty about raccoons. You do not, however.
Raccoons that live on the edge of the city like my neighborhood have lost their fear of man. They are bold and aggressive and do NOT run when confronted by people. They are more apt to turn on the person and defend their territory, even if it happens to be my own yard that they are defending against me.
The neighborhood kid that was bitten was walking from the garage to his house one night when a raccoon came out of the dark and bit his leg, requiring 4 months of rabies shots.
You really shouldn't give out uniformed advice in these forums anymore as you might get someone hurt. Raccoons can be very dangerous animals to approach in the city, especially if you don't know that they are hiding in a dark corner of your yard.
Anytime a person gets bitten by a wild animal they have to go through 4 months of rabies shots and spend more than $1500 for them. You wouldn't want to be responsible for putting someone through that because of your lame advice.
Fear-mongering doesnt help. The reason the animals are a problem in the FIRST place is because most people are misinformed. I live in the vicinity of a great many raccoons myself. I walk by at least 3 or 4 every night. Not once has one ever been an issue. If you aren't acting like a stupid shit, and the raccoon isn't feral/crazy, it is not a problem.
Teach people how such animals operate, rather than pandering a "RUN BECAUSE YOU WILL GET THE RAGE VIRUS!", as it is the sole creator of the issue
Just reporting the facts is NOT fear mongering. Just because YOU haven't had a problem doesn't mean that others haven't. Since you value research go do it as there are numerous documented raccoon attacks on the Internet.
"If you aren't acting like a stupid shit...it is not a problem"
This simply isn't true. Raccoons become territorial in people's yards and since they don't run, it is easy to literally stumble over one in the dark and get bitten.
to a point actually it IS true. Generally speaking, raccoons are only aggressive to the point you speak of during mating season, not all the time. They are, typically speaking, docile and noncombative unless threatened. Period. Experts will tell you the same thing.
The issue isn't the raccoon, the issue is the human. We encroach upon THEIR domains, not the other way around. They simply have a simple source of food in the city. Thus, they use it with little other choice.
The burden is on us to understand them, and in doing so, perfect our interactions with them as a species, rather than spreading rumors or fear because a few people here and there get bitten, and of those 90% are of their own stupidity. the remaining 10% were in the wrong place at the wrong time, really.
Can't blame the raccoon, when we are the ones raping their natural habitats in the first place. And hell, humans are more dangerous to humans ANY day.
I already understand them, you don't. They are cold-hearted predators, with no emotion, conscience, or sense of right and wrong. They are wild animals.
"rather than spreading rumors or fear because a few people here and there get bitten"
They are not rumors but documented fact. Had your son been bitten and had to endure 4 months of rabies shots you wouldn't dismiss him as one of the few people that was bitten because of his stupidity.
a) no, you don't. Are you a zoologist who specializes in racoons? No? I rest my case. Yes, they are animals. No, they are NOT predators. They are opportunistic omnivores.
b) a few isolated cases of rabies does not mean ALL of them are like that. This is like saying every muslim is a terrorist. Exactly the same, in fact.
"Are you a zoologist who specializes in racoons? No? I rest my case"
Are YOU a zoologist? What makes you the expert?
"a few isolated cases of rabies does not mean ALL of them are like that."
A few cases of innocent people having to endure rabies shots or even die of the virus is a few cases too many. You don't seem to like people very much. Maybe you should go live in the woods with the raccoons and see how well they treat you.
i wouldn't pick up a wild raccoon because it might have rabies they r cute and stuff but look at those claws! and if u leave ur scent on them the other raccoons will reject it and the raccoon will die.
That is the dumbest comment I've ever heard. How do you think rehabers raise babies. They have to touch them to eed them. Rehabed raccoons are released everyday.
"No, they are NOT predators. They are opportunistic omnivores."
ALL predators are opportunistic. They are only separated by a matter of degree. Raccoons are scavengers as well as predators, by predators nevertheless.
There is even a documented case of raccoons attacking a dog while the owner was walking that dog on a leash. That's a bit more than being just opportunistic.
"This is like saying every muslim is a terrorist. Exactly the same, in fact. "
This is a very poor analogy and simply not true. First of all, rabies are common in raccoons in the eastern United States - not just a few cases.
Second, saying a wild animal might carry a disease is not the same as calling a religious group of people terrorists. Only someone who is a complete fool would make a comparison like this.
"Generally speaking, raccoons are only aggressive to the point you speak of during mating season, not all the time"
This simply isn't true. Raccoons are well known for attacking and eating pet cats year round, and not just in my neighborhood but all over the country.
"The issue isn't the raccoon, the issue is the human. We encroach upon THEIR domains"
WRONG! I am just as much a part of nature as raccoons are and I don't consider my yard their domain; that is MY den.
This is irrelevant. animals FIGHTING does not enter into the context of this discussion in any way, shape or form. You are talking about raccoons being violent towards humans. Not cats. Territorial bickering with felines is irrelevant, therefore.
b)
right. So your house was there for hundreds of years, and has been in your family for that length of time? No. The city you are in has not always been there. And it was a habitat for animals long before humans :)
"This is irrelevant. animals FIGHTING does not enter into the context of this discussion"
I am not talking about animals fighting, I am talking about people's pets being attacked and EATEN. But, maybe you don't care about THOSE animals DYING.
"The city you are in has not always been there."
Nor have the animals that invade my space. And sorry, but I have to believe that PEOPLE'S rights have to take precedence over ANIMAL'S rights no matter what some tree huggers believe.
wow just so you know picking up baby animals is horribly bad... most mothers will kill or abandon their young when they have the sent of another species on them.
.... Just because its cute doesn't mean you can pick it up and touch it...-.-
Unlike you, I can see that Possibly children looking at these video's seeing others feeding them and playing with them might think it would be Ok to just pick one up that they might see .
So as irritating as it might be to read a comment more than once I feel two posts were not excessive. Hoping a child might at least be made aware.
oh its so cute that was adorable i wish i had a baby raccoon i once had a chipmunk :) but once it got big enought to take care of its self and was used to the wild me and my friend let it go
This is true for mammals (at least according to most sites I've researched). But they also say that if you find baby mammals like raccoons alone during the DAY, the likelihood is that they're orphaned and do need human intervention so they don't starve or become prey food.
yes they do... its been proven scientificly... not only that but my friend picked up my cats kittens... and after she did my cat wouldn't go near the kitten for a few days because of their new found smell.

Although raccoons could be quite different because they are not domesticated animals.
sandersxo 3 years ago
If that raccoon were full grown it would bite her face off.
Neil6000 3 years ago
But it would be damn cute doing it!
Kruschevez 3 years ago
actually , i doubt it. If she forcibly held it sure. They aren't vicious by nature though.
sayterdarkwynd 3 years ago 2
sayterdarkwynd:
Read my quote again - I said if it was full grown it probably would. And yes, they are extremely vicious when they decide to be. You don't know much about raccoons if think differently.
Neil6000 3 years ago
they are vicious if cornered, threatened, or if their young are threatened.
You do not, however.

sayterdarkwynd:
"A little research goes a long way. I know plenty about raccoons. You do not, however."
People that get all their knowledge off the Internet end up making ignorant statements like you.
I have lived at the edge of a woods for the last 24 years and have more than a dozen raccoons in my yard every single night.
"If it was simply walking by, it would very, VERY likely not attack, but rather avoid or run away."
Tell that to my neighbor's kid that was bitten by one awhile back.
Neil6000 3 years ago
sayterdarkwynd:
Raccoons that live on the edge of the city like my neighborhood have lost their fear of man. They are bold and aggressive and do NOT run when confronted by people. They are more apt to turn on the person and defend their territory, even if it happens to be my own yard that they are defending against me.
The neighborhood kid that was bitten was walking from the garage to his house one night when a raccoon came out of the dark and bit his leg, requiring 4 months of rabies shots.
Neil6000 3 years ago
sayterdarkwynd:
You really shouldn't give out uniformed advice in these forums anymore as you might get someone hurt. Raccoons can be very dangerous animals to approach in the city, especially if you don't know that they are hiding in a dark corner of your yard.
Anytime a person gets bitten by a wild animal they have to go through 4 months of rabies shots and spend more than $1500 for them. You wouldn't want to be responsible for putting someone through that because of your lame advice.
Neil6000 3 years ago
Fear-mongering doesnt help. The reason the animals are a problem in the FIRST place is because most people are misinformed. I live in the vicinity of a great many raccoons myself. I walk by at least 3 or 4 every night. Not once has one ever been an issue. If you aren't acting like a stupid shit, and the raccoon isn't feral/crazy, it is not a problem.
Teach people how such animals operate, rather than pandering a "RUN BECAUSE YOU WILL GET THE RAGE VIRUS!", as it is the sole creator of the issue
sayterdarkwynd 3 years ago
sayterdarkwynd:
"Fear-mongering doesnt help"
Just reporting the facts is NOT fear mongering. Just because YOU haven't had a problem doesn't mean that others haven't. Since you value research go do it as there are numerous documented raccoon attacks on the Internet.
"If you aren't acting like a stupid shit...it is not a problem"
This simply isn't true. Raccoons become territorial in people's yards and since they don't run, it is easy to literally stumble over one in the dark and get bitten.
Neil6000 3 years ago
to a point actually it IS true.
Thus, they use it with little other choice.
sayterdarkwynd 3 years ago
The burden is on us to understand them, and in doing so, perfect our interactions with them as a species, rather than spreading rumors or fear because a few people here and there get bitten, and of those 90% are of their own stupidity. the remaining 10% were in the wrong place at the wrong time, really.
Can't blame the raccoon, when we are the ones raping their natural habitats in the first place. And hell, humans are more dangerous to humans ANY day.
sayterdarkwynd 3 years ago
sayterdarkwynd:
"The burden is on us to understand them"
I already understand them, you don't.
Neil6000 3 years ago
a) no, you don't.
Exactly the same, in fact.
sayterdarkwynd 3 years ago
sayterdarkwynd:
"Are you a zoologist who specializes in racoons? No? I rest my case"
Are YOU a zoologist? What makes you the expert?
"a few isolated cases of rabies does not mean ALL of them are like that."
A few cases of innocent people having to endure rabies shots or even die of the virus is a few cases too many. You don't seem to like people very much. Maybe you should go live in the woods with the raccoons and see how well they treat you.
My guess is they would eat you for dinner.
Neil6000 3 years ago
i wouldn't pick up a wild raccoon because it might have rabies they r cute and stuff but look at those claws! and if u leave ur scent on them the other raccoons will reject it and the raccoon will die.
LILOLILLYJUBJUB 3 years ago 5
not sure if that what you ment, but you can't get rabies from claws. rabies is only in the head part of an animal
TheJohnOfJacks 3 years ago
That is the dumbest comment I've ever heard. How do you think rehabers raise babies. They have to touch them to eed them. Rehabed raccoons are released everyday.
Paintbug1 3 years ago
sayterdarkwynd:
"No, they are NOT predators. They are opportunistic omnivores."
ALL predators are opportunistic. They are only separated by a matter of degree. Raccoons are scavengers as well as predators, by predators nevertheless.
There is even a documented case of raccoons attacking a dog while the owner was walking that dog on a leash. That's a bit more than being just opportunistic.
Neil6000 3 years ago
sayterdarkwynd:
"This is like saying every muslim is a terrorist. Exactly the same, in fact. "
This is a very poor analogy and simply not true. First of all, rabies are common in raccoons in the eastern United States - not just a few cases.
Second, saying a wild animal might carry a disease is not the same as calling a religious group of people terrorists. Only someone who is a complete fool would make a comparison like this.
Neil6000 3 years ago
sayterdarkwynd:
"Generally speaking, raccoons are only aggressive to the point you speak of during mating season, not all the time"
This simply isn't true. Raccoons are well known for attacking and eating pet cats year round, and not just in my neighborhood but all over the country.
"The issue isn't the raccoon, the issue is the human. We encroach upon THEIR domains"
WRONG! I am just as much a part of nature as raccoons are and I don't consider my yard their domain; that is MY den.
Neil6000 3 years ago
a)
This is irrelevant. animals FIGHTING does not enter into the context of this discussion in any way, shape or form. You are talking about raccoons being violent towards humans. Not cats. Territorial bickering with felines is irrelevant, therefore.
b)
right. So your house was there for hundreds of years, and has been in your family for that length of time? No. The city you are in has not always been there. And it was a habitat for animals long before humans :)
sayterdarkwynd 3 years ago
sayterdarkwynd:

People, racoons can carry rabies they are about 2nd or 3rd on the list for being dangerous to handle.
They are cute and funny, and all that..But they really can be dangerous..
So be careful and not think you can just handle one when you see them around.
They also can have very nasty dispositions. Bites are easy to get.
Enjoy at a distance.

what do you do? go through every raccoon video and post this same comment?
i'm pretty sure people are not that dense that they would just let a rabid animal all over themselves
mrshammett 3 years ago 4
Unlike you, I can see that Possibly children looking at these video's seeing others feeding them and playing with them might think it would be Ok to just pick one up that they might see .
So as irritating as it might be to read a comment more than once I feel two posts were not excessive. Hoping a child might at least be made aware.
Sorry if this offends you.
am2gd2btru 3 years ago
And also..Rabies can be transmitted before an animal shows signs. So a cute little racoon might look just fine. But not be well at all.

You know, once you've picked him up and got your smell on him, the mother is likely to abandon him.
GaaraKittyNii 3 years ago
This is true for mammals (at least according to most sites I've researched). But they also say that if you find baby mammals like raccoons alone during the DAY, the likelihood is that they're orphaned and do need human intervention so they don't starve or become prey food.
Br2veHe2rt 3 years ago
If that's the case, I hope they're okay.
GaaraKittyNii 3 years ago
they dont abandon their young just because of scent, and day and night makes no difference.

yes they do... its been proven scientificly... not only that but my friend picked up my cats kittens... and after she did my cat wouldn't go near the kitten for a few days because of their new found smell.
