@Oktoberfesting I understand the Romney hate, but 2 of the candidates on your list are outright laughing stocks (Palin, Bachman) and one is 75 and shows pretty clear signs of mental decline (Paul). Once an enemy is 'hors de combat' it is "beneath the dignity of the King" to inflict combat or further humiliations on a captive. It's being gutless and the harm is to the honour of the iniatiator at the same time as to the health and safety of the recipient.
Any combat sport has laws, and so also does war. That is why those nations who value civilised humanity met at The Hague and at Geneva all those years ago. It wasn't just a prayer circle.
Torture aside, it's also morally questionable that Romney would support refusing to give these terror suspects legal representation. Whatever happened to due process?

people will eventualy confess to something they didnt do if they are being tortured, Obviously!! over 90 percent of people who are put in prison and later found to be innocent plead guilty' why, because the police basicly make them because otherwise they get in even more trouble, and they never even did ne thing in the first place'!!!!!!!!
I have lived in the south most of my life, but every cop I've known was racist. I can only sigh.
But there is something worse than even that: the drug war. It's up to $52 billion a year now. We spend enough money each year taking away people's weed to send hundreds of thousands of kids to college. Can you even imagine anything stupider than that? Our markets starve for skilled workers while helicopters flit about looking for mary jane. It's beyond madness. It's goddamn suicide.
Romney's not as stupid as these comments, but he's not that much smarter either. He doesn't fully believe he's saying here (at least I hope,.. who can know what he really believes), but it doesn't matter -- you're supposed to be a man first, regardless of your station in life. And Romney just doesn't believe in that.
I know that the truth can be a hard road to travel. Life ain't easy or fair, but you can only stray so far from that road before you never find your way back.
Romney's response to the old geezer should have been, "If Americans lives were at stake and we had disreputable proof that a prisoner possessed valuable information, would it then be alright to water board him ? "
He didn't have a rough torture,he broke his arms crashing his jet, something he did quite a bit of.His arms just didn't heal properly. He's hated by his former pows, who nick named him Songbird for chirping out a lot of important weapons information, including info about the latest smart bombs we had. There's more bad news.Read some books about him,not by him or his friends.I'd say he'd qualify as a pathological liar. You should be able to tell that just by what he said during his campaign.
McCain's a good man, but I don't get it. He had pretty rough torture; he can't even raise one arm. Why would he oppose an interrogation method that leaves no long-term effects, especially when LA was saved using water boarding?
Yeah well when people hate you maybe you can deceive them by treating them correctly instead of reinforcing what made them hate you in the first place. Sun Tzu also said something like «in a conflict who has the moral right» Meaning if in a conflict you are the moral person, you are most likely to get support from others and to motivate your troops.
The only hope the Geneva conventions have of holding anyone to a higher standard is if they don't apply to terrorist scum like K.S.M. Yet McCain wants to give the same protections we would give a regular soldier, in uniform, simply trying to defend his country, to evil murderous freaks that rejoice in killing innocent civilians and brag about personally cutting off the head of Daniel Pearl. If John McCain had any honor left he would not slander our armed forces trying to play politics.
I didnt vote for McCain, but his answer to the torture question was absolutely right. America should never stoop to the vicious tactics of our enemies.
What Romney was saying is that he would oppose torture that would be admited by the army but he agrees with torture that is done within military secret. I call that being full of shit.
Actually no, that's not what he said. What he said, plainly, was that we should not broadcast our playbook to the enemy. I happen to agree with that. Three of the top known terrorists in the world were subjected to "torture" that has no lasting effects and prevented a second wave of attacks that would have killed more Americans. And your problem with this is?
I agree that a wise country shouldn't broadcast playbook to the enemy. I think John Mccain agrees with that too. Romney just said something everyone would agree on instead of answering the question! Now to the question of torture I think people agree that in the short term it can give answers and help. But in the long term does it help if the anger against you rise or if current or further enemies can justify their torture on your people because you do it in the present or the past.
A few things: If McCain did agree then why did he keep pressing Romney to say he would not use waterboarding? Second this idea of reciprocity of treatment when dealing with the likes of al-qaeda is lunacy. There is not a country or terror group or any other possible future enemy out there that would decide to treat our soldiers better based on whether or not we waterboarded terrorists or anything else we did.
The way a nation or group treats captives comes from out of their own set of moral values. This is why we have treated these detainees much better than they have treated captive Americans. And thirdly, if other methods had worked in getting the information we needed out of these three high level, known terrorists, we would not have waterboarded them to begin with. One uses different tools for different jobs.
McCain was answering the question while Romney was avoiding it by answering to another question which would be "should the us make public the nation's military strategies". Of course oftenly its not wise to do so who would think otherwise!? I just wanted to mention that Romney was not using a good rethoric in my opinon. I don't want to say who I think is right in my opinon about use of torture. I just don't like in general when any politician argues unreasonnably. McCain, Obama or Romney.
Don't you think they'd tell us a lot more if we just treated them like human beings, instead of villains? If we stop deceiving them, maybe they wouldn't deceive us. I know, CRAZY idea, but we should try it.
How dare you people presume to live under the umbrella of freedom that we provide for you, then question the manner that we use to provide it. If you are ungrateful for what we soldiers, sailors, and airmen do to protect your bitch ass, then pack up your shit and MOVE TO MEXICO!
Hold on a second, I'm gonna call you out on this one phrase. "UMBRELLA OF FREEDOM." I think that's a little bit contradictory, don't you? Maybe a better image would be a "Field of Freedom," or an "Ocean of Freedom." I think you're actually talking about "protection," the kind that comes from a 1984-ish society under constant surveillance, full of secrecy and deception, cut off from the outside world, uncaring of the inhuman acts being committed to maintain this ignorant way of life.
You lying sacks of dung. What terrible human beings you have to be to lie about these things, and even worst to sanction them. How empty is the soul of such men???????
years ago, two parents went out for dinner. A few hours later, the babysitter was calling to ask if she could cover up the clown statue in the kids' room, the father said,"Take the kids and get out of the house. We'll call the police, we don't have a clown statue." The "clown statue" is really a killer that escaped from jail. If you don't post this letter on to 10 videos tonight, the clown will be in your bed at 3:00 am with a chainsaw in his hand;sorry i didnt want that happening to me
the thing is-- mccain was tortured with this not intending to get intel-- they were JUST torturing for the hell of it. they also did not have doctors present like the US does. I think it is torture, but I can understand the climate of the time and the fact that time WAS of the essence and they DID save Los Angeles. If my kid were in LA, I would have waterboarded the guy myself.
I disagree with breadym. The essential distinction between American values and that of Al Qaida is a defining issue. If we cannot even recognize when torture occurs or if we hide the practice behind the euphemism 'enhanced interrogation', then how are we different from those who take innocent life for any reason, religious or political? Our apparent hypocrisy is a powerful recruiting tool for terrorists. It is THE defining issue of our time.
So people we capture will not know what we are and arenot able to do....uhh thats why the geneva convention is their jackass!!! they can read it just like us????
McCain is a crotchety old man who doesn't listen. What Mitt said was spot on. It is not, as McCain stated, a defining issue. There are a hundred different issues that are more important to talk about and it's not wise to describe in detail the counter intellegence and terrorist procedure. It's like asking a team before the superbowl exactly what trick plays they are going to run.
WAKE UP -- Who runs Mitt? -- same bunch of crooks who bought and paid for McCain and Obama! Goldman Sachs $234,275 Citigroup Inc $178,200 Merrill Lynch $173,025 Morgan Stanley $170,350 Lehman Brothers $152,000 UBS AG $123,350 Bain Capital $123,150 JPMorgan Chase & Co $79,700 See it for your self at opensecrets -Link ---> tinyurl(dot)com/cqrzoj If you still love our country then you know it's RON PAUL 2012 --
LOL! I agree. The ONLY leadership the GOP has today is Nitt-Witt-Mitt Romney & he's personally flipped-flopped on so MANY hard-core conservative issues, he can't stand on his own 2 feet anymore. Jindal & Failin have proven themselves to be a national joke & dumber-than-diarrhea, while Rush has taken so much Oxy-Contin, it's eaten away ALL his brain.
It's GREAT knowing RepubliCONs have gone into exile & have ALL slithered back to the FLDS Compound where they originally came from. ~Ban Coulter
How is obama doing with that bush doctrine in Pakistan? Saw he is up 21,000 troops over Bush and increased the military budget 8% for 2009-2010 -- not a damn thing changes with phony left right politics -- Get on board with liberty and support Ron Paul --
im amazed that john mccain played the geneva convention card.. especially seeing as how we are the only country that follows the geneva convention. i will say this, the geneva convention is a joke. if we catch someone during wartime, they are fed medically examined and given certain rights. when the role is reversed and americans are captured we are treated totally opposite of geneva mandates. so basically why follow the thing if the rest of the world doesnt comply
"as a Presidential candidate it is not wise to speak out what we really think and be honest with you. We therefore admit to consciously mislead you and inform you of that fact. Why this works? We are all fucking corrupt and you have to choose one of us and I do not see one of you here on the podium. Lean over America. Lean over"
Romney is a sick guy. I hope someone waterboards him some day without trial and without any kind of freedoms. As far as torture goes, its a shame that this country has even done that to anyone. Thats what the terrorists wanted us to do. If we destroy freedom, we invite terrorism. Sad Sad day this video was made
As much as I REALLY dislike McCain, I actually completely agree with him on this issue. How can Mitt oppose torture when he can't even define what it is? Of course the president should have an idea of what is and is not torture. He is basically saying that the government can pick and choose when torture is or is not "okay".
I guess it's okay to torture a "terrorist", but torturing a U.S. citizen who happens to be a rapist, serial killer? That's a big NO NO. (SARCASM)
but there IS a difference. I do think it is torture, but when mccain was waterboarded, it was just for the hell of it. we did it to 3 combatants we KNEW had intelligence about an impending attack. and time was of the essence. If I had a kid in LA, I would have waterboarded the guy myself. the US also had doctors present whereas in MCcain's case, they did not. I understand the climate of the time, and do think it is torture, but understand why it was felt it was necessary. its a real quandry
Life isn't anything close to being easy for the vast majority of the world. No matter how low a person may be, there is never a good excuse to look down on them. Never. Self-righteousness is probably mankind's most malignant vice - all other virtues become casualties to it.
This is why I will always oppose Romney -- he looks down on people. When I think about the qualities of history's great leaders, disdain is not among them. It is the quality of demagogues and tyrants, not great men.
That is why he has made more money than you'll ever lie about, has been elected Governor of Mass. for two terms (the limit), enacted the first successful health care reform, redeemed the Salt Lake Olympics after 9/11 and the Olympic scandals, written two books, and raised five great kids, none of whom are in jail, addicted to drugs, or otherwise a burden on society. I saw him speak at a rally in Nevada and wasn't sold on him until the rally. Now I say: Mitt 2012!
McCain was the only Republican who had a slight slight slight chance of being marginally competitive against any democratic candidate...why, because he ran as a maverick, basically running against the Republican party, people knew he disliked Bush, and people also respected McCain for his military service, but the biggest reason is McCain has been known as a moderate on social issues, but neo-con on foreign policy...McCain they used you buddy
I'll make a comment and simplify as much as possible in order to save time and space. Everybody can can of it what they will.
People who are bad are uncomfortable around people who are good. Mitt Romney because he is a good guy tuggs at peoples' conscious and, I think, that is why he draws such polar reactions from people.
My goodness. Mitt is the only candidate that presented himself like a president should. McCain, just like he did in the other debates, just mindlessly attacked without listening.
Whoever is letting the people out of Guantanamo bay have to be moronic idiots. The people at Guantanamo bay should not be let out. They are an ever present threat.
You are assuming they are all guilty. Many of them were just rounded up, taken away and tortured without the government having any real evidence against them at all. God help this nation with people like you who do not understand how important due process is to our freedom.
you people are so funny. DONT YOU REALISE THAT THE PRESIDENT WILL BE WHAT THE RICH AND POWERFULL WANT? FOX NEWS IS OWNED BY THOSE PEOPLE AND THEY PROMOTE OBAMA.and censor the people that realy want good like Ron Paul.
you have been tricked if you think Obama is the best...

Last night McCain canceled with Letterman stating he had to fly back to Washington immediately. Middle of the taping, Dave got word that McCain was just down the street being interviewed by Couric. Dave kept saying "You don't suspend your campaign. This does not smell right, this is not the way a tested hero behaves."
If elected, when things get tough will McCain suspend being president?"

fuck them if I were in charge I would cut their feet off if it would save one American life, water boarding would seem like a vacation to these shit bags
I used to have that point of view ... but you have to look at the situation on a larger scale. It's what McCain said about taking the "High Ground" in this world. If we are going to go back to setting the moral example in this world, then we have to do exactly what McCain suggests ... and stop torturing others. Torturing prisoners will so absolutely nothing but enflame tensions even more between the US and rogue nations across the Globe. Our credibility in this World has been lost.
You must be kidding. We're talking about Al Qaeda, Taliban, Hezbollah, etc. That was a dumb thing for Biden to say. Who does he thing we are dealing with here? Al Qaeda cut off Nick Berg's head. Does Biden really think Al Qaeda,Taliban, etc. are sitting over there giving a rat's ass about what we do, and taking some example from it. Biden is a flake.

The cut and shut of it is - racism in America. Who cares if some 'raghead' gets tortured. They're all guilty by association.

Romney's response to the old geezer should have been, "If Americans lives were at stake and we had disreputable proof that a prisoner possessed valuable information, would it then be alright to water board him ? "
smoot0420 2 years ago
He didn't have a rough torture,he broke his arms crashing his jet, something he did quite a bit of.His arms just didn't heal properly. He's hated by his former pows, who nick named him Songbird for chirping out a lot of important weapons information, including info about the latest smart bombs we had. There's more bad news.Read some books about him,not by him or his friends.I'd say he'd qualify as a pathological liar. You should be able to tell that just by what he said during his campaign.
akaDickBush 2 years ago
McCain's a good man, but I don't get it. He had pretty rough torture; he can't even raise one arm. Why would he oppose an interrogation method that leaves no long-term effects, especially when LA was saved using water boarding?

Yeah well when people hate you maybe you can deceive them by treating them correctly instead of reinforcing what made them hate you in the first place. Sun Tzu also said something like «in a conflict who has the moral right» Meaning if in a conflict you are the moral person, you are most likely to get support from others and to motivate your troops.
VincentBlouin 2 years ago
The only hope the Geneva conventions have of holding anyone to a higher standard is if they don't apply to terrorist scum like K.S.M. Yet McCain wants to give the same protections we would give a regular soldier, in uniform, simply trying to defend his country, to evil murderous freaks that rejoice in killing innocent civilians and brag about personally cutting off the head of Daniel Pearl. If John McCain had any honor left he would not slander our armed forces trying to play politics.

What Romney was saying is that he would oppose torture that would be admited by the army but he agrees with torture that is done within military secret. I call that being full of shit.
VincentBlouin 2 years ago
Actually no, that's not what he said. What he said, plainly, was that we should not broadcast our playbook to the enemy. I happen to agree with that. Three of the top known terrorists in the world were subjected to "torture" that has no lasting effects and prevented a second wave of attacks that would have killed more Americans. And your problem with this is?
enochg 2 years ago

VincentBlouin 2 years ago
According to John Mccain there are more ethical and yes in a way maybe safer methods of interrogation.
VincentBlouin 2 years ago
I agree that a wise country shouldn't broadcast playbook to the enemy. I think John Mccain agrees with that too. Romney just said something everyone would agree on instead of answering the question! Now to the question of torture I think people agree that in the short term it can give answers and help. But in the long term does it help if the anger against you rise or if current or further enemies can justify their torture on your people because you do it in the present or the past.
VincentBlouin 2 years ago
A few things: If McCain did agree then why did he keep pressing Romney to say he would not use waterboarding? Second this idea of reciprocity of treatment when dealing with the likes of al-qaeda is lunacy. There is not a country or terror group or any other possible future enemy out there that would decide to treat our soldiers better based on whether or not we waterboarded terrorists or anything else we did.
enochg 2 years ago
The way a nation or group treats captives comes from out of their own set of moral values. This is why we have treated these detainees much better than they have treated captive Americans. And thirdly, if other methods had worked in getting the information we needed out of these three high level, known terrorists, we would not have waterboarded them to begin with. One uses different tools for different jobs.
enochg 2 years ago
McCain was answering the question while Romney was avoiding it by answering to another question which would be "should the us make public the nation's military strategies". Of course oftenly its not wise to do so who would think otherwise!? I just wanted to mention that Romney was not using a good rethoric in my opinon. I don't want to say who I think is right in my opinon about use of torture. I just don't like in general when any politician argues unreasonnably. McCain, Obama or Romney.

Romney is right. Even if we didn't water-board or torture anyone, it helps for them to think we might do it.
It's a moot point now that the Obama administration has released everything. Terrorists now know when to call our bluff.

the thing is-- mccain was tortured with this not intending to get intel-- they were JUST torturing for the hell of it. they also did not have doctors present like the US does. If my kid were in LA, I would have waterboarded the guy myself.
cherry32959 2 years ago
I disagree with breadym. The essential distinction between American values and that of Al Qaida is a defining issue. If we cannot even recognize when torture occurs or if we hide the practice behind the euphemism 'enhanced interrogation', then how are we different from those who take innocent life for any reason, religious or political? Our apparent hypocrisy is a powerful recruiting tool for terrorists. It is THE defining issue of our time.

(SARCASM)
What a HYPOCRITE.

but there IS a difference.
