I think it's all about location. If an area is really flat, not dense by any standard, and good visibility, light rail makes more sense. But if we're talking about a dense area, like Seattle and esp. Tokyo, monorail is by far the smartest option.
In the 60's Tokyo set the standard for dense urban mass transit w/ MR. The mystery is really why, in the past 4 decades, we here in the US haven't caught on... which is actually a little embarassing.
Well I'm sure that in the 60's when this line was finished it was very futuristic but the fact is, over 1.5 billion passengers on these rails here and not one fatal accident... light and heavy conventional rail can't say that!
