Cockroaches that have been found frozen in solid ice have the ability to crawl away and continue their lives as if nothing has happened when the Sun melts the ice away. I've done this experiment and learned the above is true. It would be interesting to have this experiment done on YouTube for school students to observe.
@wesquivel1 It's funny that if you keep their cages clean, they aren't any more "dirty" than a hamster or other commonly kept pet... roaches just have a bad rep because of their house swarming cousins XD Thanks for visiting! =)
hello my friend. i'm wondering if these roaches have that smell that is so particular of the common roaches out there? i think these are cute but i can't possibly have insects as pets.
@832existentialiste I didn't notice any smell at all while handling these guys. From what I've heard, the only time there is any significant smell associated with them is when their owners don't keep their cages clean. Usually, smells come from old bedding material/fodder used in the cage, or from the food that they are fed - especially if it's any older than a day or two. Excessive moisture will also help make bad oders, so keeping the cage dry and well ventilated is essential. :-)
@TheDarkMustang I've heard that they are relatively smart as bugs go, but I think that in this case they are simply climbing all over whatever gets in their way to get where they're trying to go! XD
I need help making a roach trap, I dont have any petroleum jelly, my mom is retarded and doesnt want to bother buying spray or a trap so I have to do it on my own, what can you recommend? Im currently putting water in a beer glass and some bread , and coating most of the inside with apricot jelly,
Are you trying to catch them alive, or kill them off? Boric acid powder is a safe and cheap way to kill them. Works great for ants, too. For live capture, a slippery-sided container with bait inside is your best bet. You'll need a shallow-sloped ramp on the outside so the bugs can easily climb up and fall in to the trap, and steep (or vertical), slippery walls on the inside to prevent traction and escape. Some dark places/things to hide under inside the trap will help keep them in, too.
@jcmegabyte I wanna get rid of them any way I can, so the jar thing how do i make it slippery, and i put it up against a wall instead of ramp I dont think it will be much of a difference. So how does boric acid powder work. Oh btw i have 2 cats, they dont help much its like they are completely uninterested in cockroaches. so i need maybe non toxic?
Boric acid is essentially non-toxic to people and larger animals (in small quantities), and pretty cheap. You can just sprinkle it into cracks and under things where the roaches walk around but where your pets can't get to it. They get it on them and end up eating it while cleaning themselves and such, and even take some of it back to the rest of colony and take them out as well. Making a bait container/trap could be tricky - you would need to experiment a bit to come up with something... :-)
@jcmegabyte alright well thanks , i think i might need a bigger jar, the one i have setup is a beer glass, but oh well lol none so far, the thing is. this morning I opened by cubbard door to get the bag of cat food, and when I was emptying some into the bowl like 4 roaches came running out, so i tried to kill some, i managed to kill 1. Im not sure where their colony is, but im guessing in the cubbard?
I'm not much of a roach or exterminating expert, but I'd guess they'd most likely hide in walls and other dark, hard to reach places where you can't hardy get to them.
I dont actually own any of these myself - they were filmed at the LANHM Insect Fair, but I get the impression that normal room temperature and humidity are just fine for them... Roaches are pretty hearty and should be able to handle just about anything we can. The most important thing is to keep the cages clean and well ventilated so the there's no chance of condensation happening inside :-)
@sdegroot1 considering madagascar is a trpoical island i'd say probably 80-100 (really 100 may be too much) degrees farenheit and probably the same humidity you would use for a emperor scorpion (this is just me guessing just google "madagascar hissing cockroach care sheet"
I always wondered if they would start breeding and take over a whole house if they ever got loose! XD On the bright side, you can probably sell any that you catch! =)
@JCMDIweirdStuff or u gotta get ur house sprayed to kill em happened to my friend and his mom is so scared of bugs so i had to be done hahahahaha and only 1 got loose lmfao
@DjPixelz i sell madagascar Hissing Cockroaches for $10.00 each i have males and females ready to mate im locateted in fort worth texas my email is jmccarthy1111@gmail.com i also ship Internationale too my phone is: 682-560-5088
They do have a pretty bad reputation for living in dirty places, but like any pet, they are really no more dirty or smelly than a cat or dog so long as their living areas are kept clean. Still, they aren't quite as fuzzy and cuddly as a puppy or kitten, and the extra legs do tend to freak out some people too! XD Anyway, thanks for stopping by! =)
I didn't notice any smell from these guys, but then I didn't put my nose right down in them, either! XD From what I've heard from their owners, they shouldn't have any more oder than typical housepets like a cat, dog, bird, etc... *IF* you keep their cage clean. Of course, your milage may vary... =)
Once I was in my room sleeping and then a giant green metallic cockroach climbed in my bed and on to my NECk, so I grabbed a can of wd40 and a lighter an turned on the lighter and sprayed it, like a blow torch and burned the shit outta that thing.
The variety of poeple waiting in line to grab some fresh roach was pretty amazing... The kids were all over them, while many pf the older visitors took it more as a challenge just to touch one! XD
Odds are good that you would never find one of these roaming around your house unless you happened to live in Madegascar... either that, or had some neighbors that had kept them as pets and let them escape! XD It does make me wonder though - now that these guys are in the country and people are raising them as pets, could escaped individuals start wild populations and eventually become an established wild/introduced species in the US and other countries? :-/
There is no escape! XD ...actually, I think all they really wanted was a dark place to hide and they would have been quite happy to stay in the box :-)
For some odd reason, most people seem to feel differently about these large, pet roaches vs. the smaller kind that infest some peoples' houses. I would definitely STOMP the house kind XD
@JCMDIweirdStuff i have one girl with a bunch of boys n i dont see any babies but um is it weird for them to eat eachother...? one just molted and i guess he doesnt like the potato chip i gaave him.
I think it's unusual for them to eat their buddies unless they're really starving.. However, they are very vulnerable when they molt, and might be a LOT more tempting to nibble on! XD Try giving them fruit or something juicy and see if they'd rather eat that than each other...
Maybe the deformed ones are a little deviant in their dietary tastes too! XD ...although it's not uncommon for insects to be cannabals. Latin is a funny language.. "antenna" is singular where "antennae" is plural. :-) Cheers!
@TheRosesBlood Check to make sure your temperature is between 75-90 degrees F and your humidity about 80%. You want a high humidity, especially when during the molting stage. And make sure your roaches have enough high protein food available, otherwise they may start cannibalizing each other.
I don't think this species can fly... I think that most Roach species can't, but I'm not sure (I'm more of a Lepidoptera guy, myself!) :-) Thanks for checking it out! =)
@JcmdiStockFootage when i moved to south texas i made a point to desensify myself to the tree roaches. I would capture everyone i found in my apt, put it in an empty fishtank and just kinda treat em like pets. sit there and watch em, talk to em. and it worked, they really dont scare me at all anymore. They're just like small dogs, they eat everything...shit everywhere...mildly intelligent. Yeah .. dogs
I did hear them hiss a couple of times while some kids were messing with them but they stopped as soon as I started filming! XD Maybe they were camera shy or something... Thanks for stopping by!
I know - I was dissappointed that they didn't want to make any sounds while I was filming them... Apparently they were so used to being handled that they didn't feel threatened enough to make the hissing defensive sounds. Thanks for watching anyway! =)

jcmegabyte 10 months ago
@jcmegabyte ya they didn't hiss for the same reason at my local museum
