Amaaaaazing... I truly have the feeling that every moment Caballe is going to leave her skin and flourish a huge irate Monster ready to regurgitate fire everywhere on the stage and beyound!
Adriana and the princess have exchanged insults and have discovered that each other is the rival for Paurizio's love. Adriana has been engaged to recite something at the Boullio's party and when asked, the princess suggest that she recited the monologue from The Abandoned Adriana. The prince suggests Phaedra instead and Adriana recited this monologue in which Phaedra admits her adulterous feelings. I'll post the text next
Just Heav'ns! What have I done to-day? My husband comes, With him his son: and I shall see the witness Of my adulterous flame watch with what face I greet his father, while my heart is big with sighs he scorn'd, and tears that could not move him Moisten mine eyes. Think you that his respect For Theseus will induce him to conceal My madness, nor disgrace his sire and king?
Will he be able to keep back the horror He has for me? His silence would be vain. I know my treason, and I lack the boldness Of those abandon'd women who can taste Tranquillity in crime, and show a forehead All unabash'd.
One more example of Caballe's incredible versatility. Who would think from seeing and hearing this that she's also one of the greatest exponents of bel canto! Powerful, directly from the gut performance.
Most Adriana's hate this scene as Phedre Monologue has to be delivered in the manner of Racine 17th century declamation style. Not easy for a singer.I have coached this scene many times if not done well it can just fall loosing the dramatic point.Caballe is supreb and so moving.Brava!Brava!!
It is unfair that her acting ability is so underappreciated. I have the old pirate recording with Magda Olivero. She, too, is moving, but a might febrile, whereas Caballe is rock-solid.

First class gay drama queen stuff... truly bad taste. Everything acting shouldn't be on opera stage...

The way she holds on to the chest register up to the very end where high notes are exposed is amazing!

Too weaping, overreacted, even rude in certain moments. Almost no amplitude and dramatic centre.

@nlupos Stop doing drugs, or maybe you're talking about Sutherland's rendition.
