apparently in a website called secret of sonic team it said that while metal sonic is standing there ring would fly around him(like in the special stage video)then the rings would disapear and metal sonic would start moving.so what he made might have been before the boss to give the player a chance to collect rings before out of nowhere the rings Come out.

Just a note: This might be hard for an ameteur to do, but in the original version, you could see Sonic's reflection on the floor.
