Hi Insel... good for you starting at 57, here's a bit of advice that will help you a lot:
Learn and play the pentatonic scales, just play the 5 notes in them until you can go anywhere in any 'Box.' (learn the boxes too.)
When you have mastered those you can then bring in other odd notes that go from the full 8 note scale, and start bending etc. That is the blues. At the moment you are just 'messing' about on the guitar and it's not very good.
