I also studied Okinawan Isshinryu Karate. On the last two moves of Kusanku, I would say, "Yes, Yeah!!" You complete this long kata, you deserve to. I never got to learn Sunsu, unfortunately.
Can anyone tell me the basic teaching motion around 0:51 after he turns from the right hand low block and left hand side block.
I was having trouble with the bits up til the elbow strike just before that, so that's all I've been doing the past week, and now I forgot the last move my teacher showed me.
He was just doing it half-heartedly, as many of us do from time to time, as a "quick-breeze" review of the kata. Nothing wrong with that. We all have those moments in training when we are simply just reflecting on a few sequences of the kata...
well fisrt off that is Master Tatsuo Shimabuku...i have no clue who any of you are talking about he is performing kunsaku in tacoma washington it was at Steve armstrong's dojo, who is now deceased as of decmebr or november of 2006 i was at the funeral as an honorary Marine, his son's where there with other members of the martial arts community of the Puget sound area, this video wasnt done while he was sick it was done about 1965 since isshinryu was created in exactly 1954
No. Isshin Ryu was created over a few yrs mate, and was continually progressing. It was aptly named by Shimabuku one day but for some time the his students were giving it names, Isshin ryu was not exactly created in one yr, who told you this?
I am told by Master Bohan long ago that the Kata's were made at the time a few students were leaving Okinawa. On the day these were made he was sick or had a cold of sorts and still obliged to perform the katas for them to take back. I received a copy and was told to keep it close hold in 1987.

I saw a video of two reknowned kung-fu masters engage in a full contact fight on you tube. They looked like a couple of school girls, they obviously knew nothing about true self defense, but they were expert in kata and they looked good kicking and punching in the air. Bunkai is extremely over rated. If that is how you plan on defendeding yourself , with Kata and Bunkai alone then you are in for a rude awakening. Kata alone is not going to prepare you for a real fight, naive to think otherwise.
Kata is the one of the best way to prepare yourself to fight in a self defense situation. You practice the moves in kata and not only does it hlp to perfect the techniques but your body will be more prepared to use the techniques on instinct rather than memory when it needs to. My head sensei often tells us of the story of two great grand masters who each took one student and trained only him for a year. One was trained only in fighting the other in kata. The student who studied kata won.

That's a cute story, but it has no basis in reality. You often hear those types of stories from so called senseis who only study kata and have never been in a real fight in their life and have no clue what they are talking about. Just because you wear a black belt and know some katas does'nt mean you can fight for real. A ballerina can fling their legs and arms in the air at a much higher level than any black belt in a set of choreographed moves. I suppose they are masters of fighting too!!!!
yes it was. if you knew anything about his history you would know that these videos of him were unknowingly distributed. grandmaster shimakuku was not happy to hear this because he knew that they did not resemble the true essense of the katas. tatsuo was the top out of all of his master's students.

It is hearsay that Shimabuku was a top student or even a student of any master. Please cite your source that any master ever claimed Shimabuku as a student let alone a top student. Shimabuku had some minor informal training under his uncle as a child and the rest he picked up along the way hear and there, so the story goes.
I am still quite curious to know why you are putting so much time and effort into smearing his name?
Once again I will say that if you really doubt his ability or his credibility, come step on the mat with me. We live in a physical world where things affect us physically, so quit hiding behind the Internet with your insults. Step-up and put-up or shut-up.
@kungfuxdrummer If what my teachers were told by theirs is right, while the basic motions Master Shimabuku were using were correct, he also didn't want his forms recorded because he believed in the idea of an evolving art: That whoever took over his place should be better than him and therefore, if they saw fit to change how they did and/or taught a kata, it was a good idea.
People that disrespect this should be burned, it is not all about the jumping spinning roundhouse kick, it is transitional, I my self have been training in Isshinryu for 9 years. One of my teachers just became the 10th degree. Grand Master Willy Adams. I am a second degree black belt.

I would imagine if he was sick or did'nt want to be filmed he would have said so, for he was the master. The changes he made to traditional karate, IMHO, are not superior techniques and was the opinion of many of his senior students who parted ways with him. Even footage of Shimabuku in his "Prime" lacks focus and power in his techniques. Perhaps he made such radical change to traditional katas because he could'nt properly perform them or had forgotten them over the years.
when I studied karate under ezio his brother we would just learn the movement of the kata first then we would go full power and perfect the kata. ive seen his brother Im sure he is trying to show the kata movements to preserve it.
its kinda stupid that people would call this slop if anything. if you did sum reaserch you would learn that master Shimabuku was just aloowing someone to record him doing all the katas as a demonstration so they could all be on film. he was just demonstrationg not doing them full power, as if he was training or in a tournament.
uminchu7th - that is slop? go to the spinning kicks, tell me how quickly and smoothly he is doing that. To me, that is not someone who is 'sloppy' or 'not putting his best effort'. Because it looks flashy or sounds like it's got power doesn't make it powerful.

From a historical perspective this is invaluable, however he is not putting his best effort into this kata. a lot of slop. His senior students here in Okinawa were younger and did a much better job of preserving the dynamic factor of his kata. Angi Uezu prior to his stroke was a master technician and others... this is not a criticism, but obvious reality.
haisai . Chatan. I don't know how good you are in Okinawa styls history , but almost every Ryu Ha has changed his kata. The most famous was Funakoshi.
I don't understand why shimabuko sensei could changed the original kata so dramaticaly, isshin ryu is a mix of shorin ryu and goju ryu however I can not see any of both in their movement.
This was in the 60's so this kata actually predates and is probably closer to the original one than whatever version you learned. All katas have changed over time and it's impossible to say with any confidence which version is the most original.
At 15 seconds, is he punching or doing a knife hand block?
