Because I was thinking the humans because it was the humans that drove to their extinction which during that event couldve blow up the statue of liberty, or was it the Apes that blew it up to keep the secret hidden? @FireStormBaller when dr. zaius blows up the cave to obscure the more advanced human, pre-simian civilization, the clincher was the talking doll in the form of a human--this is precisely the reason the statue of liberty was chosen--because it was the in the image of a human, revealing what happened to higher social ideas concerning art and liberty at the hands of the apes. because of these 2 strong parallels, the modeled human form showing intelligence & demolition, he is referring to the apes

Because the apes couldn't take over the planet unless the humans totally destroy themselves first. And during all the chaos, the humans destroy the statue of liberty. When Dr. Zaius blew up the cave, all it did was blow up the entrance, covering it, and you can clearly see that it didn't reach the statue of liberty.

In the biginning of the movie, he explained why he and his comrades were on the spaceship, because the world was being corrupted and broken, but they wanted the human species to live so they sent them in this spaceship, and since they know it's a long flight, they put that vacuum and gas chamber so they don't age as much and sent them to another planet to restart.

Which the government and space program and Taylor was talking about. And I doubt he's assuming. So the same can be said that Earth is the only planet known for having apes and horses, so shouldn't he know he's on Earth to begin with? Best surprise last scene ever... too bad it's been spoiled by endless references and even the graphic on the DVD cover. I remember seeing it for the first time in 1972, and getting goosebumps. It was amazing before everyone jumped on the spoiler bandwagon. Such a shame.
