GAH! David Tennant! Every time he tears up/cries/looks pained, I start crying. Especially when that dream sequence happened, I was in tears...then a few seconds later he makes me laugh by saying things like "You shouldn't have let me press all those buttons"
David Tennant's Doctor was a very cold-hearted person to those that did not stop when he asked them to. He always gave them a chance and if they didn't listen, he'd make sure that they never got the chance to do so again.
@Squiglypig David Tennant's Doctor was recovering from being the Eccleston's Doctor Who was so full of hate and rage and pain because of how eight had to end the Time War. Matt's Doctor is now the reborn Doctor and he's learned to be more humane... Have you seen the First Doctor? He was willing to bludgeon an injured Caveman to death with a rock... because he was slowing them down...
The music combined with Story, characters, dialogue, acting and this impending sense of a terrible fate for all the young men at the school because of the great war a year to come makes Human Nature and the Family of blood in my perspective the best two episodes of Series 3. I think they really did there research for these episodes. The Crimea Veteran and the Headmasters past in the 2nd Boer war those two little touches i think gave the story just that extra bit of depth
at the beginning he's almost sobbing when he's talking about being lonely. it shows how he really feels. like in the girl in the fireplace he says oh i'm always all right when his heart is shattered. he has to cover up his pain all the time and it amkes me want to cry. (yes, i know it's just a tv show!) and then when he's almost crying later on talking about how he fell in love and stuff i just think of rose and how dead he must have felt when she was gone because he really loved her.
thumbs up those who watch this on Remembrance Day, in memory of those who fought and died for us in WW1 and 2 and all other wars around the world and for those who are still fighting
Oh this is so amazing. And personally i think the fact david tennant is so shouty and human makes me love him more than matt smith. Hes an amazing actor and i actally believed he was still human when he gave them the timelord watch. Also david tennant crying is so... Beautiful i guess. So yeah. :)
I felt so sorry for the Doctor when he had that flash of everything he could have had. The human him was so in love and could have been so happy, but he had to go back and be the wonderful Doctor we all love, saving the universe while seeing his companions leave and break his heart one by one, for the greater good. It was a horrible choice for him to have to make. And that is why we love the Doctor - Human, Timelord or any variation thereof, and why Doctor Who is so beautiful.
"He still visits my younger sister, once a year, every year. I wonder if one day he might forgive her, but there she is. Can you see? He trapped her inside a mirror. Every mirror. If ever you look at your reflection and see something move behind you just for a second, that's her. That's always her."
"Falling in love; that didn't even occur to him? Then what sort of man is that?"
The amount of pain, confusion, anguish and terror in his eyes says everything John Smith couldn't put into words.
I was honestly a little upset and sad when I saw that The Doctor was back.
I think 11 was talking about John Smith when he was talking about the best of humanity. John sacrificed everything that could have made him happy for the greater good. Something not anyone could do. I couldn't...
Between these emotional scenes here, as well as the epic vulnerable scene in Midnight (my favorite New Series episode to date), it's a fact that David Tennant has the acting skills of a god!
I love how Tennant is able to play so different roles, being the same persons. Not many actors know how to do that. They'll just end up having the same type of roles movie after movie, episode after episode. But Tennant, played two (three) different types of roles in just one episode. I bow i awe.
Yes, David Tennant was a great Doctor but as is Matt Smith in his own way. Though I will get this out to those wanting David back... HE chose to leave, his own free will, Moffat nor the BBC have a right to drag him back into the role unless he says "Right, I'm willing to have another crack at it." So please, either enjoy Doctor Who with Matt or don't.

Family of blood and human nature was the best. I miss David he was amazing I love him so much n my grannie didn't like him in other shows but 4t he was the best doctor. Bring tennant back!!!
@BeccaLovesWicked You are completely aware that David Tennant left on his own free will and that he will never return as the 10th Doctor unless they decide to bring about a special?

@evilemperordude The fact is though that its quiet unusual for the doctor, who is a Time Lord from Gallifrey, to have human moments. rose had alot to do with humanising him, but I just think that RTD was just too obsessive with making the show a soap opra other than a Sci-fi show, which it is a sci-fi show at the end of the day. If say the 7th doctor was in this sitiation, he wouldnt have any of it at all, he'd probaly have disaplined Rose. I just think the chamelean arc was an excuse for-
@evilemperordude Tennant to show off his acting in elements such as Shakespear, not playing THE doctor. If i was the 10th doctor, i would have probaly disagreed with this story with RTD. I just don't think its right, in my opinion, Tennant was too human, emotional and a bit mockney as the doctor, he wasnt bad, but not my favorite.
@CoruptedCorupter My humble guess is this is something the Doctor never allowed himself to dream about because he knew he could never have it. Then in the middle of yet another adventure its handed to him, then taken away again. For the Doctor, I imagine this was payment in kind.
@CoruptedCorupter He was giving them what he wanted; to live forever. And The Doctor gave them a chance, that's why he turned himself human. But since they continued, he had no choice but to do what he did.
"He could never have a life like that." The Master aged him past several regenerative cycles, he had a daughter, his clone at least said "I love you" (probably, I heard this was confirmed somewhere) to Rose, he probably loved River Song, and he has saved billions of planets of living beings. What are YOU talking about, John?
Even as a human the Doctor is deprived of the things he can never have :(
David Tennant is just......Wow. To be able to portray one complex and intricate person with two completely different personalities and views, and with such amazing acting, is just mindblowing. Mr Smith being a normal man with normal desires, and The Doctor being....well, there is no way really to describe the Doctor, besides what Tim says. He is wonderful.
@unsightlytroupe1 I'm surprised they dont show em there, ide thought it would most likely be shown there than here in australia, even then, they show torchwood there aswell, ehy not doctor who? We get doctor who, torchwood and K-9, no Sarah jane adventures though.

The moment where John and Joan see what their life together would be reminds me of one of the better Star Trek The Next Generation episodes, "The Inner Light" (1992). In a few minutes Captain Picard lives an entire life as a father, grandfather, and community member. The cost of being heroic is not to have that normal life.
Season 3 in general I think was brilliant because it contained he best episodes. Paul Cornell's Human Nature/The Family of Blood, Steven Moffat's Blink and Russel T. Davies' Sound of Drums/The Last of the Time Lords. Out of all of them, Moffat won the Hugo award though.
After he like pushes the father, he stares directly at you at 9:34 That always sends shivers down my spine; 'cause at that point it is shown how ruthless he really can be... God I'm gonna miss David :-)
@theacut I disagree. Why didn't he just meet Joan instead of her descendant? Makes no sense. He does have this living time machine called the Tardis ya know.
@dknights411 Loved David Tennant, but honestly I've taken much more to Smith. To me, Tennant was far too shouty - I prefer a much more subtle Doctor. To each their own. :)
*sigh* I both looove and yet hate this episode. I love DT; he plays it sooo brilliantly and I'd tear up every time I see this episode, but within the story, I would so weep for Martha. Because just as she'd said, he goes and falls in love with a human, "...and it's not me..." this was a true testament to the reality, that the Doctor would never love Martha the way she wanted. Brilliant, but sad episode.
I hope u don't feel too much of an aftershock when he regenerates tomorrow and changes his appearance this time (Journey's End reference). Time this message was sent was 9:16 pm 30/12/09
It is sad. Martha loves him unconditionally though, and that must have made it even harder for her to drag him away from the requited love she wishes she had. But at least she knows that if she didn't convince him to turn back, that life John Smith imagines would never have happened anyway because the Family would have destroyed everything - there would never be a happy ever after. So in a way... idk *shrugs* lol
I've never seen Doctor Who before, but this scene has convinced me to look it up. His excellent acting just yanks you into the scene and makes you feel it with him, whether you know what's going on or not.
Very powerful scenes, indeed... :) I loved this episode, especially Harry Lloyd's Narration at the end. He is a great actor, as well as David Tennant.
if the Doctor can make himself smell like a human, why couldn't he do something similar when the Judoon were inspecting the hospital where he first found Martha when they found him?
yeah, that's why I purposely used the word 'similar'
and you seem to imply that since the Doctor has already used the Chameleon Arch (that's the name! I had forgotten), he can't do it again, which isn't true, 'cause
A) we're not sure he's ever used it before. tadis.wikia says that it could've happened with the seventh Doctor but no one knows for sure
B) nothing says you can't do it more than once
But yeah, it's excruciating, but it would've been less risky than killing off one of his hearts!
The "Dream Of A Normal Death" track at 4:38 always gets me.
I have to say this story wasn't one of my favourites and I rewatched this and "Girl In The Fireplace" and loved them. The acting, especially David Tennant's, is fantastic.
If that watch also contains the memories of the Master (as we see in 'Utopia'), why do the Family of Blood not get those memories when they open the watch after the Doctor gives it to them?
Because The Master and The Doctor have different Fob watches, they're not the same, they each have they're own watch.
When the family of Blood opened the Doctors watch, that wasn't The Masters, because he had a watch of his own.
Also, when they open the Doctors watch, they smell nothing, because The Doctor has already revived him-self, so they could'nt get anything from the watch, because it's empty.
It was part of his "misdirection". He had to get the family to believe he was still human, and so redirected his scent, As he stated after they found the watch didn;t carry the essence anymore.
Two major themes here - a Christ story - John sacrfices himself to save humanity. And the Doctor coming to terms of how lonely of an existance a sole Timelord has. I have to say, Tennet's Doctor is a good balance of the light and dark side of the Doctor.
they were called the family of blood in the book as well iirc, and then his memories were in a cricket ball type object - referenced in the episode where he stops the woman with the pram by throwing the cricket ball
I was so thrilled with Tennant's performance in these two episodes, Human Nature & The Family of Blood. The way he plays the Mr. Smith is just breathtaking, the difference between Mr. Smith and the Doctor.. And yet, they're the same, in a way. How he plays his fright for the change and all of this. He's an amazing actor, really !
And I absolutely ADORE Harry Lloyd's narration with the Fury of the Time Lord part, he has a smooth voice.. He's a good actor too ! =D Thanks for uploading :)
this is a great video and i am a great fan of doctor who so nice to meet u i am doctorwho434 and this video is really cool and shows you about the great doctor and him being a timlord
I like this episode too, just because of the raw, emotional quality of it. ♥ Thanks for posting.

@theacut there was a reference to this episode in the End of Time?
shannonbug18 1 year ago
@theacut I was wondering if it was a reference to the 11th, with DT wearing a bow tie!
Ereldor 1 year ago
@theacut wat reference r u talking about??? i dont remember any reference
crazydammonkey 11 months ago
@theacut I disagree. Why didn't he just meet Joan instead of her descendant? Makes no sense. He does have this living time machine called the Tardis ya know.

And THIS is why David Tennant is awesome, not only as the Doctor, but as an overall actor. 'Doctor Who' will go on, but it just won't be the same.
dknights411 2 years ago 101
@dknights411 Loved David Tennant, but honestly I've taken much more to Smith. To me, Tennant was far too shouty - I prefer a much more subtle Doctor. To each their own. :)
w00master 10 months ago
@dknights411 He wanted to be the doctor as a child it was his dream no wonder he plays it well

EVERYTIME!!! I always get teary at this episode no idea why.

In this episode the Doctor has a fob watch, but that's also an acronym for Family Of Blood
Abominatrix650 2 years ago 5
These strong and emotional scenes show David's best acting. Just like the episode from christmas day, another very brilliant episode.
ilsje113 2 years ago 4
*sigh* I both looove and yet hate this episode. I love DT; he plays it sooo brilliantly and I'd tear up every time I see this episode, but within the story, I would so weep for Martha. Because just as she'd said, he goes and falls in love with a human, "...and it's not me..." this was a true testament to the reality, that the Doctor would never love Martha the way she wanted. Brilliant, but sad episode.
pennypritty1 2 years ago 12
I hope u don't feel too much of an aftershock when he regenerates tomorrow and changes his appearance this time (Journey's End reference). Time this message was sent was 9:16 pm 30/12/09
Abominatrix650 2 years ago

His excellent acting just yanks you into the scene and makes you feel it with him, whether you know what's going on or not.

davids teeth look really white in these scenes

He's like fire and ice and rage, and, he's wonderful.

Very powerful scenes, indeed... :) I loved this episode, especially Harry Lloyd's Narration at the end. He is a great actor, as well as David Tennant.

i like the part where we find wut he did to 'em bcuz it shows wut he can do if he's pushed
Termina88 2 years ago 4
Shows how briliant David is at acting how he went from being the doctor to being the human again in less then a second at 2:00
pshnazz 2 years ago 7
totally agreed! and you can really tell the difference between human and timelord, even his voice sounds different. some actors couldn't do that
stonepaw989 2 years ago 6
The Dream of a Normal Death scene makes me cry every time.

if the Doctor can make himself smell like a human, why couldn't he do something similar when the Judoon were inspecting the hospital where he first found Martha when they found him?
genericusername337 2 years ago
the Judoon's scanners read DNA, and he already used the Chameleon Arch, which by the way is extremely painful to use.
iammjolnir 2 years ago
yeah, that's why I purposely used the word 'similar'
and you seem to imply that since the Doctor has already used the Chameleon Arch (that's the name! I had forgotten), he can't do it again, which isn't true, 'cause
A) we're not sure he's ever used it before. tadis.wikia says that it could've happened with the seventh Doctor but no one knows for sure
B) nothing says you can't do it more than once
But yeah, it's excruciating, but it would've been less risky than killing off one of his hearts!
genericusername337 2 years ago
I don't expect you to know though, I mean, they probably didn't know themselves they'd be using this story when they made that episode
so, I dunno.
genericusername337 2 years ago
plus the fact he didnt have the tardis on him when he went to the moon too lol x
BlueMiscellany 2 years ago
The main reason why he couldn't use the chameleon arch was because the tardis was on Earth at the time. He did not have access to it.

The "Dream Of A Normal Death" track at 4:38 always gets me.
I have to say this story wasn't one of my favourites and I rewatched this and "Girl In The Fireplace" and loved them. The acting, especially David Tennant's, is fantastic.

I love this episode. Especially Martha's little "i love you" speech--sort of like Rose's at 'Doomsday'. Very good! Molte bene! Thanks! :D

If that watch also contains the memories of the Master (as we see in 'Utopia'), why do the Family of Blood not get those memories when they open the watch after the Doctor gives it to them?
lolfearme 2 years ago
The watch from "Utopia" was a different watch. You can tell by the fact that both watches were different colors.
DrWhoJr 2 years ago
Because The Master and The Doctor have different Fob watches, they're not the same, they each have they're own watch.
When the family of Blood opened the Doctors watch, that wasn't The Masters, because he had a watch of his own.
Also, when they open the Doctors watch, they smell nothing, because The Doctor has already revived him-self, so they could'nt get anything from the watch, because it's empty.

i dnt get the end of family of blood when he was soo scared and then he just was soo clever.. or did he mean 2 do dat/? sme1 tell me?
mossbournegoodie 2 years ago
I think he was acting to fool them
iammjolnir 2 years ago 2
It was part of his "misdirection". He had to get the family to believe he was still human, and so redirected his scent, As he stated after they found the watch didn;t carry the essence anymore.
Two major themes here - a Christ story - John sacrfices himself to save humanity. And the Doctor coming to terms of how lonely of an existance a sole Timelord has. I have to say, Tennet's Doctor is a good balance of the light and dark side of the Doctor.
Oh, and how good is Freema?

same here especially the ending

Hav u guys noticed the initials 4 the family of blood r F.O.B? & th doctor contained his memories in a fob watch?
Abominatrix650 2 years ago 3
they were called the family of blood in the book as well iirc, and then his memories were in a cricket ball type object - referenced in the episode where he stops the woman with the pram by throwing the cricket ball
TorchwoodVGPS 2 years ago
I was so thrilled with Tennant's performance in these two episodes, Human Nature & The Family of Blood. The way he plays the Mr. Smith is just breathtaking, the difference between Mr. Smith and the Doctor.. And yet, they're the same, in a way. How he plays his fright for the change and all of this. He's an amazing actor, really !
And I absolutely ADORE Harry Lloyd's narration with the Fury of the Time Lord part, he has a smooth voice.. He's a good actor too ! =D Thanks for uploading :)
