@Hope3269 I think how you see the movie is a reflection of the viewer. I've watched it dozens of times and truly like the people in it, I think that many of them say some pretty profound things. People who laugh at it are just closed minded and condescending. Similarly you hate it because you feel it was designed to humiliate, but that's you projecting. Errol Morris always makes movies about unusual people & situations but he does it with affection.
@Hope3269 - I love the film. I first saw it twenty years ago, and I've watched it several times since. It doesn't make Vernon look bad at all. The people in the film are quirky and endearing. They make me laugh not because I think they are ignorant, but because they fill me with nostalgia for a slower way of life that seems to be vanishing before our very eyes. You should be proud of this movie. Not many towns are blessed with such a collection of master storytellers.
@frentzbravo7 Actually, when the documentary was made, they were robbing and ready to kill: The documentary was originally intended to investigate a massive fraud in wich citizens from Vernon cutted their own limbs off to collect the insurance money, when the people from Vernon realized what the documentary was about, they threatened the director's life (and a threat coming from a person who cutted his own arm o leg is a serious threat) and forced him to leave the subject of the massive fraud.
It's amazing that barely 30 miles south of that town lies some of the most beautiful beaches anywhere and one of the top rated spring break locations in the country. That is the diamond in the rough for northwest florida though, a good portion of the region is inhabited by such turkey hunters as this living happy simple lives in unincorporated towns spread across the state. Thankfully times are changing and the populous is moving towards a more educated society, may you rest in peace you backwa
Sorry I never got more of the documentary uploaded, but the time simply isn't there anymore. If you would like to see the rest, I recommend renting the film. Definitely worth the $5.
Proud former Student of vernon HIgh , GO YELLOW JACKETS< god this town is still this way today , but now they fightin to keep it , cause they done run a road through it !!!
LOL @ That Pick-up truck in the beginning. There's the reason for your Greenhouse Gases/Global Warming/Climate Change. Can we put that $300 billion a year back into the economy now? the culprit's in Vernon, Florida. . . no gooder.
I have lived in Vernon my whole life, and most of the people are not as crazy the documentary makes them appear. I still think the movie is hilarious though.
Why spend money on a dvd when you dont know if you will like it? I buy only DVDs I like. Some I have paid as much as $35 for. With services like netflix you can watch a movie for little cost then make up your mind if you want to own the DVD. Or if you want to be a criminal you could rip a copy of the DVD you get from netflix onto your computer then burn it to a blank DVD. Cost for blank DVD .50 cents. Or $250,000 and ten years in fed prison. Cheap DVDs on Ebay Beware? ok :(
I used to live in that godforsaken place for a summer in 2006 so I could work in Panama City Beach to make money on my college break. My parents moved down there to put up a store. Needless to say, two years later, they moved back to Indiana. My aunt who moved with them, remained in Vernon, where she met her wonderful backwoods husband. We don't talk anymore really. I'm telling ya as a person who lived in this place, this documentary is SPOT ON.
@puppersings Sure, if that's what you want to think, go for it. They still close down their doors on Thursdays around noon because that's when they would 'lynch the niggers'. If you think I didn't DIRECTLY hear that from more than one resident, then I feel equally sad for you.
@cmchrzan LOL I think i would know how Vernon is. My dad was raised there, My grandparents have always lived there and i go there alot. Plus, it's no longer like this. They have tore everything down to build a 4 lane.
That's My papa is the beginning driving the truck. :)

The truck had a machine in the bed, it was spraying for mosquitos. That wasn't the exhaust.
Me112233 1 year ago
That's bugspray, not exhaust. They do that in the South in the Summer time because of mosquitoes.
