Whatever is best for the shot, a lot of big stuff like Helm's Deep and Minas Tirith look best when done with miniatures. They still used miniatures and paintings on all the Star Wars movies.
@TheGus619 Are you not aware of the 2007 Final Cut? It's simply an improved version of the 1992 Director's Cut, made because the '92 version was cheap and rushed. Scott didn't have time to do it himself, he just sent them some notes.
The 07 version has been done with great care and fixes a number of issues, you can see every change on Wikipedia.
You are not alone in thinking that the special effects have not been surpassed by the CGI. The important thing is not just CGI, but the way the film's director synchronizes all the elements to make a film to be epic.
@The7thCreator actually the greatest accomplishment of this film is for us to ponder what is real and artificial and ultimately what does it mean to be HUMAN. everything else is just window dressing and scenery.
@The7thCreator Remake is out of the question, they don't even have the rights for that (and I'm 100% sure Scott would never want that anyway). Scott said to the Wall Street Journal it's "liable to be a sequel" and that Deckard would not be part of it (thank God for that, his story was done).
I just realized the synthesizer and the drums at 0:17 in The Big-O OST - "Stand A Chance" is a direct shoutout to Blade Runner's end title music. Also, Deus Ex Human Revolution's Icarus and Inception's Old Souls. You know something is a masterpiece when it's been homaged over and over again throughout the decades. watch?v=LhtZWkNa3YU
Yes, it's curious, in the basic edition doesn't appear the version that you told me. You can only get it by buying the briefcase Blade Runner [Blu-ray] [1982], you can get it on Amazon (please, read carefully the description, it must have 5 discs inside).
The removal of the voice-over and 'happy' ending really did this film a universe of favours. As it stands, the Director's Cut is possibly one of my favourite films. I haven't caught the Final Cut yet.
Also, I bloody love the end credits! Vangelis made the most eighties-tastic noises ever known to man. It makes me want to have a neo-noir cyberpunk adventure of my very own.
The director Ridley Scott has given the last word to each viewer, each one can choose which version amuses him the most. Vangelis did a great job for Blade Runner and in some way each viewer has its own noir adventure with this film.
I got The Final Cut (Blu-Ray) just yesterday. Awesome! The scenes are brighter, cleaner, sharper and more textured. There are so many details I haven't noticed before on Director's Cut DVD. (Tattoos on Roy Batty's shoulder and even the freakin' bolts on the celiling fan at Tyrell Corp.! ) They did an excellent job restoring this masterpiece and YES... Bryant also got his math right this time. Indeed it was 2 (two) replicants that got fried leaving four.
The director Ridley Scott has given the last word to each viewer, each one can choose which version amuses him the most. And I think that the 82 version should be considered as an extended version with an alternate ending because if it's not taken in this way we could lose material from the original version screened in cinemas.
Indeed with the remastering of this film, it obtained higher definition, winning in detail what in the DVD format couldn't be perceived.
Decker, who knows why Batty saved your life? Perhaps it was a favor to a colleague (from a human´s assessin to a replicant´s assessin). Perhaps it was a favor from a replicant to a replicant (supposing Decker was a replicant too as it has been speculated) or perhaps Batty did not want to die alone but to say his last words to and share his last thoughts with someone.
I think the replicants lifetime is too short to investigate the Universe and less with our means today, unless that they don't travel, but they are teleported into the Universe. That way they could cover the distance in light years that separate us from each galaxy. Batty rebels against the transience of his life, and it’s this frustration feeling what makes him vulnerable and this vulnerability makes him closer to Decker and tells him all of his experiences that will be lost like tears in rain.
@the7thCreator You're right. This movie was a pioneer. It generated the whole cyberpunk genre (I would love to see either Neuromancer or Count Zero made into a movie). The movie also brought up the ethical issues associated with genetic engineering and makes the point that being human isn't soley determined by any conventional definition
This is one of my favorite movies of all time, but I have to laugh at the rather primative version of 'photoshop' and the videophone that took up an entire wall. Oh well, at least they forsaw these technologies, they just didn't realize how sophisticated they would become
Aside from that , I take it you have heared the news that ridley scott is going to direct blade runner 2.... i'm feeling optimistic but in the air about it really i hope the film will have a lot of creativity but can it surpass the original i highly doubt it but maybe it will be on par who knows... tron leagcy didnt work out so well as everyone hoped but then again we are in the hands of ridley scott.
@marvelbrothers Oh sh*t. They're making a sequel to Blade Runner? They should just leave it alone. The only sci fi sequel I can recall that was better than the original was Aliens II. More likely than not they'll screw up this sequel (prequel?) relying on stunning CGI effects rather than a story line.
@cryptokinesis When I read on this topic I thought it was just a rumor, but now there is a confirmation that it will be done. It's curious the fact that I made a video editing about Blade Runner before that this happened. In the same way that I came up with a video editing about Total Recall, that days later it was planned to do a remake. It's just a coincidence, but I like a lot.
@marvelbrothers: As you said, we’re in the hands of Sir Ridley Scott, he often has success in all of his projects.
@cryptokinesis agreed.Alien was superb but i agree that aliens was better. the only sequel better than the original yes.....oh and terminator 2 also. Both James Cameron films!!! He must be the master of the sequel
the director of shawshank redemption even said that "harrisons ford's monolouge after roy battys last words was like having really cold water being poured over you whilst having sex..... " in other words he didnt like it
At the launching kit where it's included all the versions, Ridley Scott wrote a letter to all viewers of Blade Runner and I quote: "My goal was to bring the film in the way you prefer, with the highest quality picture and sound." I think the director gives the last word to each viewer to decide what is their preferred version and I think that each viewer should respect the choices of others.
@marvelbrothers I just can be sorry for you! 1st: you dont dont what 'noir' means; 2nd - you werent there, in 1982, at the birth of cyberpunk and lived thtat: I was! OV and Internationational are the best cuts - and, of couse, the anti-hero Deckard's not a rep! Rachel and Roy(!) turned him into a human!
@BladeRunerUnit99S your kidding right.... you actually perfered the version with harrison ford's voice over .... even ridley scott and harrison ford perfered the final cut.... they say it in the "dangerous days2 making of... documentry... the voice over was basically used for people to understand what was going on more.... oh and by the way ridley did say the final cut WAS his perfered version WATCH THE INTRODUCTION BY RIDLEY BEFORE WATCHING THE FILM
Everything you said is true, but @ marvelbrothers lived the time of release, an experience that somehow has marked his life and the film itself it's striking and has an inherent ingredient, which is the nostalgia, (you might not belong to this generation and so you may not understand this feeling).
@The7thCreator actually by rewatching some cuts of blade runner and have given it some thought..... the narration does give it a sort of 1940s noir detective's journal style to it and i can respect your nostalgia of the film since this was a film made during your time ... the only part i only found the narration not to be needed was after batty's speech. i do apologize for being harsh on your opinion.
I'm realising that this can become a true forum about Blade Runner, especially with the comments of @marvelbrothers and @BladeRunerUnit99S, It can not be expected less from a movie that makes you think and enjoy as much as Blade Runner. Thank you for your comments.
Indeed, you're right. this moving fragment in which the Nexus-6 replicant reflects on the transience of his life and the words of Dr. Eldon Tyrell: "The Light That Burns Twice as bright burns for half as long - and You have burned so very, very brightly ...",makes the viewer meditate.
Epic end titles for an epic movie! When the end titles started I was just speechless, so many thoughts and emotions going on, Blade Runner really made you ponder about big things.
When I'm reading your comment apart from being agree that this movie is epic, I think that this movie is inspirational because it makes you meditate about many things such as this alternative future that never comes but it's still on everybody's mind because it helps us to imagine this future.
i loved this film so much it was one of the rare films that actually made me care for each and every character and having to deal with most of their terrible fates, now name me a movie that can do that to you these days, great upload :)
@tosspot86 I agree with your approach. A good director gives to each character its own life and it makes them more authentic and convincing, though the fate of each is different as in real life. I'll tell you a title that is not new but is the same director: Gladiator (2000), is another genre but it's also a great movie. About the same genre I can say that Matrix also has the effect of identification with the characters. Thank you very much for considering my video editing as a "great upload."
I love this movie, this music. Thank You very much I can watch it all the time. It is very difficult to describe what I feel when I see these pictures and listen to music. Greetings from Poland!
dont read this because it actually works, you will be kissed on the nearest possible fridayby the love of your life. tomorrow will be the best day of your life, however if you do not post this on a least 3 videos, you will die within the next 2 days.now you have started reading this, dont stop this is so scary put this on at least 5 videos in 143 minutes when you are done press f6 and your lovers name will appear on the screen in big letters.this is so scary because it works
Thanks The7thCreator for your kind comment about mine. One of the reasons why Blade Runner is so well critically received is that it takes seriously to an art form the mundane(masses daily living, sleeping, eating, boredom and the obscene(murder, perverse sexuality, paranoia, etc.) along with the metaphysically beautifully juxtaposed and cinematically edited into a fast paced story. It beautifully captures the high stresses of "modern" high speed thoughts, high speed feelings.
Count with your analysis of the film that you do, is very pleasant because you give a professional status to the comments of this video editing. I invite you, if you have time, to do an analysis of my other video editings. Thank you very much for your comment.
Earth, space, "modernity" (remember "Post Modern"(!?)), "advanced technology" intertwined with the primal forces of life, death, love and sex all beautifully presented, acted, film edited (remember in those days(!) they used real film) and finely actutely script focussed give us a masterpiece of the early 1980's cinematic art in the USA.
I agree, is a cinematic masterpiece, speak of 'Blade Runner ' is to talk about art, is to speak of human beings, is to speak of an experience that transforms the viewer. This film that Ridley Scott directed from a novel by Philip K. Dick is extraordinary to the point of becoming a pioneering masterpiece in its genre that revitalized the 80's film and as always, without doubt the U.S.A was and is a leader in this art. Than you for your comment.
It may not be a so distant future, as the new spacecrafts that are being built by private sector initiative (BOEING) and NASA (which will take up the proposed trip to Mars, possibly for the year 2016).

@hospitalship1
