The sinking of Andrea Doria caught many people by surprise, especially the captain, since the hole technically didn't breach enough sections to expect her to sink. During the inquiry into the sinking it was discovered that empty fuel compartments were not filled with sea water, as was the practice of the day (this was the captain's decision). In the aftermath of the collision, the resultant lack of ballast caused the ship to list beyond its design limit and the bulkheads were overtopped.
I was six when the Andrea Doria sunk! To this day I remember her with fondness and admiration. She was breathtakingly beautiful and a very special vessel.
If the Andrea were a woman she would have been a glamorous model--so it's like seeing a beautiful woman on her death bed gasping for breath--just wrenching--I don't get this feeling from watching stills of other ship wrecks, just hers for some reason.
This ship was the end of trans - atlantic liners, everyone finally realized, "Why the fuck do we keep sending Giant ass ships into the atlantic ocean just so they can die?" And thus, airships were born, The ship is honestly pretty amazing though, I love the sleek look of it, and the paintings of the decks remind me of a time when things were better
@Timberwolf8998 Actually, this ship sunk in 1956. I assume you mean Zeppelins when you say "airships." Sadly, the Hindenburg exploded in 1937, which marked the beginning of the end of airships. Airships never really caught back on after World War Two, because Europe was decimated and the Cold War immediately followed.

This ship was said to be unsinkable too, but only 1 of the compartments were flooded and it sank
