Just makes me grin from ear to ear, and has been for 25 years+. I hope for at least another 30 or 40 ;) Rory Gallagher in his place of work..priceless.
is it just me or do irish guitarists not only have th soul in there playing but power to just make you speechless and keep watching more......rory and gary are THE best guitarists R.I.P
Gotta feel sorry for the backing band, he's going steadily faster the whole way through until he gets to the last couple of mins when he takes off altogether - they were chasing after him the all the way.
@artorwar Jesus, relax mate. "I think you'll find" everyone here knows that. It's just figure of speech? It doesn't always mean you literally feel sorry...
Every time I see this I feel as though I need a shower. It's fucking filthy, man! This is a truly stunning live display of REAL ROCK N' ROLL virtuosity. From the 3:00 mark on Angus Young has absolutely nothing on Rory Gallagher when it comes to guitar god stage antics. It doesn't get old. It blows my mind and melts my face every time I watch it.
@samansun oh sure, he is out of all cliches... but I don't know if his technique was better than than Vai's or Petrucci's, actually. I mean:
Pentatonic scale was synonymous of creativity in the 70's when Gallagher used to make his works: jimi hendrix used it but modified.. but now there are so many different ways to modify a guitar sound that you can only say that he was creative at his times, not now.
@ale9164 The Rory Gallagher Appreciation Society for Idiots, Part One. Everybody 'modified' the pentatonic scale you foreskin. And you can only ever say of someone who isn't around anymore, that they were creative at the time! He's been cited as an influence by Queen's Brian May - to whom he gave the then teenager, a tutorial on his sound which now resonates in every note he plays - and U2's The Edge, to name but a few.
@ale9164 The Rory Gallagher Appreciation Society for Idiots, Part Two. Over the course of his career, Gallagher was first and foremost a jazzer which is the single most important thing that is never said about him. His father was an alcoholic traditional musician and the influences of trad can be heard in his playing, esp on 'Out On The Western Plain' where he tuned the guitar to Uileann pipe settings.
Suffice to say there are many reasons why you 'pentatonic' comments are out of tune...
@dermotwalker actually the Uilleann pipe is tuned to an open D with sharps and flats. Out on the Western Plain is in the classic blues tuning DADGAD, used on the original recording of the song by Leadbelly
@dermotwalker Well dadgad is basically open-d just with the 3rd string being a normal G instead of a G flat. That's the only distinction, but if you watch him play it live, he does tune his guitar into DADGAD, when he strums the open chord it's not a standard D
@dermotwalker Maybe, I'm not too sure, but I do know for a fact that Gallagher plays the song in DADGAD, that was pretty much the main point I was trying to make.
Awesome clip of Rory at his very best. Hard to believe that this was the opening song of his set. Most people don't achieve this level of after 90 minutes on stage. I was lucky enough to have seen him live a couple of times back in the early 80's. I still have the guitar pick I caught at the end of the set. I later met him and he signed my denim jacket and tour book. He was one of the nicest, most genuine rock musicians I've ever met.
AAA h Rory G.such a Badddddd man on that 6-string thing.Another one of the legendary originals for axemen and sadly alas taken too soon.Thank Rory and God for making sure he layed down plenty of wax before he passed away.R.I.P. my brethren Scotsman.
RIP Rory - named my son after him. saw him at Toad's Place in New Haven in '70s, and he was incendiary and brilliant, playing this same beat-up Strat; met and interviewed him after ... probably had 12 of his albums, but "Photo Finish" was the best and this leadoff track smokes
Rock on Rory a legend of legends we played some serious air guitar the night you died one album over and over again and we were boxed to the ears it was bright when i left that shed that morning.
Clapton was good with the Bluesbreakers, then the Yardbirds, then the Cream, then the Blind Faith but later he's music has died. He became a lousy bar-musician.
Claton was good with the Bluesbreakers, then yardbirds, then Cream, then the Blind Faith but fater he's music has died. He became a lousy bar-musician.
