I attended Otter Crest that year and watched Gene Harris play "Cute." I don't recall Gene ever playing any tune better than this rendition. His performance ended the music for the evening. Otter Crest was his favorite performance venue. He told me that if he had only gig to play to each year, it would be Otter Crest. This setting along the Oregon coast is beautiful. The Inn at Otter Crest became a time share, and the annual jazz event ended. This evening was spectacular. Happy birthday, Gene.
Wow. I've never seen this. Thanks for posting! I used to have the vinyl version. His piano intro doesn't was edited out on it. It goes straight from "..and I'm Gene Harris" into the riff of the song.
Fantastic! Though the description says "no one plays like this" is maybe a bit off... Intro I was like "ART TATUM!" and the I was like "OSCAR PETERSON!" Amazing playing still...
What a great loss! As fast as Oscar and a ton of soul pouring out. I had the experience of meeting Gene at the Jazz Showcase in Chicago and conversing with him before the performance. Though a master, Gene was unassuming, friendly and very loved by jazz fans here in Utah. At the time he was sick from failing kidneys and it was hoped that his daughter's kidney would work. Unfortunately he passed away far too young.
Here's to you, Gene... there better damn well be pianos in heaven...

Ah, the great Jimmie Smith, with his "barrelfull of" drumsticks. -Great school, Julliard. Terrific bass work from John Heard.

So few people know who Gene Harris is. Pity. Been my favorite since I discovered him. Who are his sidesmen in this gig?

@AmeliaRay wow, how insensitive of the recording producer! That great piano intro makes the performance. Including it was not optional.
