@elcentinela1991 You're right. It was a long day, I was tired and the Tokyo deal had fallen flat. Next time I shall pull deeply from the well of replies.
@theflash555 in a straight line, i would take the Charger with a 440 over the mustang and its 289, but i love mustangs for their handling, so i would pick that around a road course.
Actually the stock suspension on the Charger is better than the Mustang. The stock Mopars handled better than the Fords. I have owned alot of both and thats just a fact.
Although the best handling factory mustangs of that era were probably the 65-66 Shelby.
The 68 Charger featured in the movie was only a 440 RT with no six pack option. The six pack was not an option until 1970 for the Charger.
@SuperKing1320 I'm sorry, but i can't for the life of me believe the stock Charger out handles a stock mustang. it almost seems like trying to get a tank to out maneuver a bumble bee. but I can't say i have experience on anything more than a '66 mustang with a 289 and a 3 speed. its a fantastic car though, even by todays standards.
Rent the directors edition. They have an interview with Steve McQueen and the making of the movie. The Charger was a stock 440 6pac and had to be detuned to let the Mustang keep up with it.
There isn't really that much difference in driving an old car or a new car as many makes it sound like, of course modern cars handle better but its not as much difference as you might think.
Yes it was a charger - but if you watch the crash scene close enough you can see it driving behind the petrol station after it was meant to blow the place up. Cheered me up because I adore that car. Willyicious - you are one lucky person to own one. I own the european cousin of the mustang - a Ford Capri - so I can't complain much. Beautiful car - but a real handful to drive at times!
Nice video though I do have to object to the blatant lack of the Charger which was the better car in that chase sequence. You could have replaced the repetitive shots of the Mustang and McQueen with some shots of the Charger.
You need to do a Vanishing Point one now.

I drove a Capri 2.8 V6 once. Still pretty sharp and punch for it's age, but the steering was what can best be described as 'quirky'.
Lovely old motors though :o)

@capriluvincharlie my dad used to own a 3000 e ford capril fucking beast not as good as the mach 1 mustang though but good enough

The star of the movie was the black Charger. In fact the car that crashed was not the Charger, but a Chevelle.
formerice 3 years ago
I love that black Dodge, too.
Own a '68 myself.
Unfortunately, that is a Charger that crashes @ the chase finale.
Two were used in filming; both were destroyed.
willyicious 3 years ago
anyone realize , both these cars handle like shit?
otterhead45 3 years ago
Absolutely! Imagine having to drive two nosy-heavy cars like that with drum brakes and 14" bias-ply tires!

the charger was not supercharged

It's a U.K. thing. Indeed, the film would be fairly formula if not for the amazing chase.

Indeed sir. That chase is up there with Vanishing Point (the entire movie).

Fair point. I was just trying to parody the Top Gear 'lap', hence no Charger. Both beutiful cars though.
perkin2000 4 years ago
Ahh oh well. I agree that both cars are beautiful though the Charger is my favorite. Wish I could make it my first car.
