The elevator did not fall 19 floors. Modern elevators have emergency brakes that snap onto the cable right away.

If the elevator dropped 19 floors, then the brakes would have been useless as it wouldn't have had anything to clamp on.

The wire didn't even snap; from what I heard from technicians, the overweight alarm went off, and that's what caused to elevator to halt.

Of course, with furries being involved, the story is obviously over dramatized.

I saw them get rescued. Honestly, the elevator probably handled the overload more or less as designed. The traction motor was overloaded, so it disengaged and the car was supposed to return to the ground floor under the 2 or 3 additional safety systems placed there for exactly that purpose, albeit as a faster ride than usual. If it had made it another 3 feet, the whole thing would have been uneventful.

Given the wait times on the elevators, I can understand the desire to fit everyone on.

All elevators have emergency brakes if the cables can't hold the weight, and are made to slow it down gradually as it drops.

If you fell 18 floors, assuming each floor is 10ft high, you would have been in free fall for 3.44 seconds and would have hit the "bottom" at 75.186 mp/h or 121 km/h.

@kernelwolf It wasn't a fall at that speed, you can tell there was backup breaks or something going, but it was definitely falling faster than an elevator is supposed to fall.

That's absolutely nuts. When we were at MFF this year we had so many people in the elevator that it was jerking and dropping a couple feet, but we were on the 2nd floor so it wasn't as... scary. Definitely glad everyone made it out okay!!

Elevators have both electromagnetic and inertia driven emergency brakes. They will engage if the car over accelerates too fast in either direction using counterweights, so FALLING 19 floors maybe a bit dramatic. But I did see the Fire Dept come rescue you guys :p
