  • I am of the opinion that we have digressed? I prefer the music from the 40s and 50s... 2000+ were horrid!

  • grunge?

  • 1938 1969 1970 what songs

  • @500Renzo 1938: God Bless America - Kate Smith, 1969: Aquarius - Fifth Dimension, 1970: Bridge Over Troubled Waters - Simon & Garfunkel

  • 1:41 ice cream truck song :)

  • Yes, Black people have made some of the greatest music in history... But WHAT THE FUCK HAPPENED? After 2000, it seems that talent just disappeared.

  • No mj?:(

  • Not even a mention of Grunge music, even Nirvana during the 90s? No MJ either?

  • No Metal songs? lol, at least Black Diamond from the 97'

Ok ok, it's only popular music; but why did you put classical music? that's the antonym of pop.

  • @JuanPaBJxGothic Well, in the sources I saw (which I should stress are rather innacurate and really old), some classical music was considered as being really popular back in 1890. The antonym of pop is not necessarily classical music, but underground music, which is what ISN'T popular!

  • @JuanPaBJxGothic you do know tat before te 1900s, the majority of music was "classical" music. The form of music that was in written form, that geniuses like Mozart, Beethoven, and other greats created.

  • 1984 what is this song

  • @500Renzo When Doves Cry - Prince

  • Needed more rock

  • 1948 what is this song

  • @kanta930 Buttons and Bows - Dinah Shore

  • 1967 1977 WHAT ARE THAT SONGS

  • 1967 1977 WHAT ARE THAT SONGS

  • @kanta930 1967:To Sir With Love - Lulu; 1977:Tonight's The Night (Gonna Be Alright) - Rod Stewart

  • That was great. This music! I love it! It was a great times from last two century! :)

  • 1920's to mid 1970's songs are simply wonderful, then music really died.

  • 1991 what is that song?

  • @Liveupas (Everything I do) I Do It For You - Bryan Adams

  • oh, okay, guys, plz read the blog entry about this video then you'll know why MJ and Madonna aren't on there. Oops.

  • This is great minus no Michael, Madonna and Britney. Those three were such an influence, Brit with teen pop, Madonna with 80s trends and women in power, and Michael with his theatrics. Still a great vid.

  • HA I'd like to show this vid to someone from 1890!

  • I'm just stunned that I didn't see Michael Jackson even once, since he revolutionized modern music, but great job on this otherwise.

  • Yes, we have gone from orchestras of real instruments to THE AGE OF COMPUTER MUSIC, we modify our voices to sound robotic and we repeat everything a million times, What s change!

  • ive got a music history exam later today man and this was actually pretty helpful! except i think the sex pistols should've been included (1976) and the sugar hill gang (1979) because those sorta marked the formations of new genres.

  • Nothing before this has ever demonstrated to me quite as clearly just why parents would consider Elvis such a scandal. I can certainly appreciate the memorable melodies and elegance of earlier popular music, but boy do I breathe a sigh of relief in the 1920's and 30's, and again in the 50's. Give me music with some soul and swing any day. Just my personal preference.

  • Each time i see 1890 and then i jump to 2009 i say OMG IS THIS THE SAME PLANET? THE SAME HUMANS? because WOOOOOOOOOOOW!!!!!!! technology have made us change in everything O.O'

  • Very nice, you shold put their names, for those like me who are not born in North America.

  • @parasitodeluz : There is a link in the description with all their names...

  • Good but ur a fool 4 not puttin up frank Sinatra... And I'm 14 sayin this

  • @bruinshockey97 I could tell you are 14, because you didn't even bother to read the description and to understand why it wasn't my choice to include or not sinatra. Also don't think you're special just because you're young and you like something not many people your age might like. You're on the road to hipsterism, i'm afraid...

  • @bruinshockey97 you go frank rocks comin from a 10 year old

  • 2000's - boooooring... *yawn*

  • campare first one with last one

    ahahahah!

  • The early stuff is cool, the new stuff is crap. The best song IMO was the first one. Tchaikovsky FTW

  • 1898? I really want to know what that is.

  • @celestialobserver The Rosary - Unknown/Robert Cameron Rogers?

  • 1919?

  • @flo61201924 Swanee by Al Johnson

  • who is the person the show at the begining when it said 1890.

  • @cartoonfan29 That would be Deborah Harry, from the band Blondie

  • you could see how fresh the beatles were compared to previous music in this video. :)

  • @sdsheep195 the beatles are shit

  • @th3Arisaka Agreed.

  • @th3Arisaka and the black eyed peas kick ass YOU FAG

  • @trololoxd100 sarcasm by the way

  • @trololoxd100 What? i Strongly Dislike them, look at my favorite videos

  • Great video a salute to popular music all though it goes down hill after the 90's but none other you got alot of good talent in this list. Alot of people keep saying that you left alot of popular music out but if you had every popular singer and artist it would be a 2 or 3 hour video and it would take 10 parts just to do it justice.

  • this is a great video....except for the fact that you ONLY chose the cheesiest one hit wonders for the 90s and 00s. Why is that? You chose creative examples from other decades...

  • This video really shows how exciting and different rock 'n' roll must have sounded when it first came out...

  • i think you missed the entirety of funk and disco music, which are unbelievably influential in today's music. also think this is also overwhelmingly white music

  • @TheAriannaMarieK : This isn't about me. I didn't compile this information. I just made the video. The information by which i made the video is present on the description, so you can check the sources for yourself, and complain to them.

Alternatively, i made similar videos but with other sources, so you can analyze those too, if you have the time.

  • what about michael jackson

  • You could choose better songs..... Where are Guns N' Roses? Nirvana? Bon Jovi?

  • @xAnnaVelvetXx : I didn't choose the songs. The music that appears here was the one listed as the top of the top in the mentioned sources

  • Where the hell is Michael Jackson's Thriller!?!?

  • wow Great....

  • 14:33 wooo go mariah but why you didnt feature her on 1990 her grammy performance of vision of love ?

  • @ThatsARandomNameLOL : Because this video isn't about my personal taste in music, but about what really happened in music history, in this case, the top performance that ranked #1 in every year of the timeline above. I do like her performance of vision of love though!

  • 00:18 looks like a man i would usually see standing by my bed and ill shit my pants :P

  • What are the names of songs in 1949 and 1959? thanks

  • @NikoLiberty1000 These videos only depict the top #1 track of each year. For a more comprehensive view of music history, check out my 'visit a year for 6 minutes (top 20 countdown)' playlist, which currently has every year from 1980 to 2009

  • @HayenMill What's that song at 1927?

  • @n64wilbert : 1927- Star Dust - Hoagy Carmichael and his pals

  • @HayenMill Oh yeah I couldn't tell because Louis Armstrong did a Jazz version of that pop tune. What I mean by Jazz is improvisational music!!

  • what is the name of the song in 1907?

  • @flo61201924 : Harrigan - George M. Cohen

  • @HayenMill YOU SHOULD PROBABLY POST A LIST OF SONGS AND ARTISTS IN THE DESCRIPTION TO SAVE EVERYONE THE TROUBLE, ALSO I'M SORRY BUT MY CAPslock is broken, oh wait nevermind. :D

  • @grufeetywy : I can't post the tracklist directly because its so big that youtube won't let me. Instead, there is a link to a blogpost where i placed the tracklist by year. Check it in the description box

  • for real....no michael jackson?......really? micheal friggin jackson.....are u high?

  • " I can't listen to anything recorded after 1950" - Woody Allen.

  • I loved it from 1890's-1969 rest is total crap >.< (Opinion)

  • @DeutscheRossiya: thanks for your opinion!

  • @DeutscheRossiya how can you think that load of crap in 1891 is good LOL, your a bit in the past

  • @MsFathole How could I think that because that is music, and it's my taste

  • @MsFathole I think it's beautiful music, and who gave you rights to insult my taste in music,My taste in music is most certaintly not CRAP 1891 is not a load of crap, what is a load of crap is Michael Jackson,Lady Gaga,Bieber,Van Halen etc. John Philip Sousa,George S,Billy Murray, they played their own music and sang beautifuly 1891 best music ever. Since you offended my taste,I shall return the same to you, your taste of music is terrible you probably like rap,and pop

  • @DeutscheRossiya well you did call the rest over 1969 crap...

  • @MsFathole And that is my opinion and you are not to judge or offend me by my beliefs

  • @DeutscheRossiya but i can question

  • @MsFathole No you didn't question rather you insulted.

  • @chicseeker Michael Jackson is currently 3rd in Facebook fans among musicians and the most among any dead act, more than even the Beatles! I would have added a Madonna song for 1985 (you have 2 George Michaels in there). Even the 1930s I could recognize progress (more rich, complex harmonies/melodies that decade). But it seems like the development probably peaked sometime in the early to mid 1980s and has been all downhill ever since.

  • @pannoni1 : If its of any interest, when I have some free time i'll work on making a similar video to this one but using Billboard instead of Musicoutfitters, as i've noticed that some of the tops are noticeable different.

  • @pannoni1 : BTW, such video I mentioned is now available in my channel. Check it out.

  • @chicseeker : I didnt mention those artists/bands because not once did one of their tracks hit the very number one position in any year. I know, i know, i'm as surprised as you. I did write about it in my blog post concerning this video (see description). Other "wow" artists include madonna, abba, etc etc.

  • Just a quick correction that you need to make. The George M. Cohan song for 1904 is "The Yankee Doodle Boy" not "Yankee Doodle". It's the one that goes, "I'm a Yankee Doodle Dandy, a Yankee Doddle do or die. etc." What you have is the 18th Century Revolutionary War song.

  • @dmnemaine : Thanks for the feedback!

  • good job

  • Nice job. It is a very educational trip through music. It also helps me since I am working on a senior project that takes place in the early 1900's with the end of the Victorian Era.

  • It should be MORE views!

  • @bennyhopper : Thanks for the kind words! If you think it should have more views, share it with some of your friends. Its kind of difficult for this type of videos to gain a lot of views because its very long and the beginning is practically irrecognizeable for younger people, which will make them loose interest quickly

  • Beautiful~

  • Very interesting. Looking forward to seeing the full list with the names of the artists.

  • Brilliant.

  • @alexmccormack : Thank you for the kind words!
