No offense towards your friend, but if that's what he got fom this, then he obviously wasn't paying attention, or heard only what he wanted to hear. In that segment when The Dictator (Charlie Chaplin) speaks directly to the solders, he clearly says-

If he doesn't understand after that, then just smile, tell him he's right, and go about your day.

Its my interpretation that Chaplin is not saying the army and discipline is evil, he is saying that blind following is. Your friend should take no offense to this if his commander would never throw his or any enemy's life away on a fluke or for selfish reasons, only if his commander revels in power and abuses it.

You should be willing to die in battle because you know that the man who put you there KNOWS your value and has accurately judged cause that you both serve worth the sacrifice you have made.
