Of all the bikes they could be riding they choose fixed gear...why not a single speed? You can go faster because you can coast and have sufficient braking power. I guess it's the image that comes with fixed gear bike. It represents rebellion, youth (and stupidity) and dressing in street clothes instead of spandex. It's rebellious because not only are you not in a car but on a bike without gears, brakes or a brain. And of course no-helmet is mandatory because that wouldn't be cool.
