There is no shortage of work that needs to be done in the United States. We have much to do. ANY able bodied or able minded person who is receiving assistance from the government should be made to work for it. The length of time that such assistance is given should also be limited. When one group of people uses a government to assist themselves, it leads to dependency (a form of slavery) and corruption in the government (politicians buying votes).
@FreeTheNation First off you only addressed able bodied people. There is pretty much only food stamp help for able bodied people and they actually have to be working in order to receive them for more then 3 months, and people on unemployment have to show proof of looking for a job in order to keep receiving it as far as I know. There also may be work available for everyone but unless you force people or companies to hire and not fire there would still be massive unemployment.

I don't think people in socialist European countries consider themselves as such and actually surveys have shown them to be in the top happiest people in the world. The corruption comes from our extremely capitalist society where everyone's only goal is to make more money. No government has the authority to use FORCE to STEAL money from one person and give it to another person. That is TYRANNY. @FreeTheNation Clearly most people agree that there are many problems with our government but solely requesting necessary assistance programs that help those most in need to be ended without suggesting any sort of alternatives seems extremely selfish and apathetic. Thankfully, the majority of people still seem to care about the suffering of other human beings.
@FreeTheNation Our government and it's foundation was instituted MANY years ago by people who did their best to predict the future, but eventually everything becomes extinct or requires big changes. A number of presidents have tried in the past to make some major changes we need but because of poor education, many people being stuck in old mindsets, and because we are governed by two COMPLETELY opposite parties that are in a constant tug of war, there are still SO MANY problems in this country.
