  • Thanks for sharing.....Looks great!!!!

  • actually this is NOT youvarlakia but soutzoukakia! still delicious though!

  • Yiouvarlakia (or youvarlakia) is meatball and rice soup to which a mixture of beaten eggs and lemon juice is added as the soup simmers.

  • @KevinByrne2 Yiouvarlakia or Youvarlakia is the type of the meatballs in the soup.

Youvarlakia can also be without the soup, that's why in many areas in Greece cooks say Youvarlakia soup for the soup and Youvarlakia for dry..

Youvarlakia can also be without eggs and lemon, with vegetables.

There is also the very rare recipe, Youvarlakia with eggs and sour orange, instead of lemon.

    I am hungry now...

  • @VintageandUsed -- Thank you very much for clarifying what "youvarlakia" is: it is Greek meatballs, which may be used in a soup or simmered in tomato sauce and served with rice, as here.

  • @KevinByrne2 Not exactly, Youvarlakia have rice inside, like in the meat, Soutzoukakia don't.

This is totally Soutzoukakia with a Youvarlakia touch.

Also, youvarlakia have a round-ball shape, not oval.

  • @VintageandUsed -- Again, thanks. I'm in your debt. I wish that there were a cookbook on traditional Greek home cooking. It would be nice to enjoy the bright tastes of sunny Greece during the long winter.

  • @KevinByrne2 Cheers! :-)

There are so many cooking books but 99% of them are in Greek.

    (How typical for Greeks...)

  • thanks Eva...looks delicioso!

  • Indeed that is SOUTZOUKAKIA !!! Yiouvarlakia is a completely different recipe !!! Trogontas said that you forgot cumin my dear !! Please consider all these ! thank you !

  • That's Soutzoukakia my dear NOT yiouvarlakia , and you forgot a very important inredient : Kimino!!

  • YIASSOU EVA! Can't wait to cook this for my family. Sounds delicious!

  • Efxaristo poli Eva!! My husband is Greek, and this will help me cook to his taste!!

  • Looks really delicious and easy to cook.
