I cry every single time I watch this, be it in or out of context wit the rest of the movie. David Lynch just knows how to make a powerful ending. I mean, just look at Fire Walk With Me! This will always be one of my all time favorites.
It's movies like this where we learn what it means to be human...I still ask myself that question as often as I can. What defines my humanity? Joseph Merrick wrote this poem:
i sincerely hope that there is a better place for ppl like him to go to... he who is so deserving of all the peace and happiness that he should have had, in exchange for all the pain that he had to suffer while living.
@Patibularius I am a little confused because last I checked it was YOU who wrote and began insulting me. Not the other way around. So the only person who needs to shut up is you. You are the one who chose to make trouble, not me. Also I am not going to discuss with you the size of your genitals. Please keep such comments to yourself and leave me alone.

Harry Potter, you have fought valiantly but you have let your friends die for you rather then face me yourself on this night join me and confront your fate
Is it just me, or is almost funny how sad this movie is? I mean that scene where the girl's crying talking to him and he's like "No, don't cry, aw darn I did it again, I can't stop making people cry", it's almost self-referential. The next two days after watching this movie I felt sad. That's so sad that it's hilarious.
ok people im not trying to make this into a sob story about me, but i feel like am a reincarnation of Joseph Merrick. i mean both of us were treated like trash, and felt like we r nothing but the worlds punching bag. rest in peace Joseph............u r all ways in my mind
in actuality, Merrick died between 3pm and 4pm. His nurse had brought him food (I think oatmeal), and a book around 2:30pm or so. Around 4 o'clock she returned and noticed Merrick was lying down motionless..and the rest is history. RI.P Joseph Carey Merrick!
All men who chose to do right are monsters. To are they forced to live hated and alone. They know the feeling of being unloved and unappreciated. They know the suffering of being condemned for being themselves. it matters not what good they have done. A monster is that which others fear. some men are born monsters simply for being different and sharing with the world their gifts. there is no value in a man who gives from his heart. Only hatred of him the elephant man can be any man
I wish that were true. The measure of a man is money. Women place little to no value on the hearts of men. All that matters is the material. Nobody cares about the goodness of a mans heart. May he be a monster or 'creepy' for being himself. I am the elephant man in every conceivable way.
@PLEASANTDesigns True. Women as an example, look for the guy who is tan, muscular, and a chiseled chin. While I do not fit that category I do not fit the exact opposite either, I strongly dislike women like that and don't even bother trying to be friends with them much less b/f-g/f. People should be more impressed with someones intangibles, emotions, and overall their soul. Not the fact that they are wearing 400 dollar shirts, and gay spray on tans.
I have done a lot of things in my life but none of those creative or intellectual accomplishments mean anything to women. Over the years I learned that its all about money. That is all that matters for so many. Men suffer and always will. To be born male is to be damned for exisiting to do somehting greater for the world. Loneliness is the only true friend of men. May we all who try to be something greater be monsters till the end.
@CrashxoBandicoot its the same thing with men. they look for the girl with fair skin and a small waist. more so with guys its all around the world/ thats why we see more girls with eating disorders than men,
@copnite12342 True. Most guys I know go after petite body, tan skin, and nice eyes. I personally am more drawn towards eyes, and personality than ass/tits, etc.
@PLEASANTDesigns I'm a woman and believe me, I don't care at all about how much money a man has. All I want is a kind, wonderful man who loves me for me. I'm sorry that you feel that way! I know that a lot of women can be bitches, but there are also great ones out there, who aren't into material things. The traits I look for in a man are that he is funny, kind, and compassionate. Those are what matter most to me.
@ameliedaae i wish there were more women like you but sadly you are in a minority. Many women have told me that all that matters is the bottomline. It matters not what a man is like in his heart all that matters is if he has money. I wish it were that simple that a man just need be a good person to be liked. But that is not how it is in the real world. Men who abuse, lie and cheat are loved, so long as they have money or confidence. Kindness means very little to most women in this era.
@PLEASANTDesigns I'm sorry, but you're nothing like the elephant man. Joseph suffered at the hands of humanity, yet still had it in his heart to see the goodness of the very people who found him repulsive. He still had hope, optimism and faith, and he firmly saw himself as a MAN, not a monster. A woman rejects you, so you think that most women are gold-diggers? Your creative/intellectual accomplishments mean little if your heart is filled w/ contempt for your fellow human beings.
@melenmelenmelen "Contempt"? And you are very much like all of the people who tormented Joseph. Always making blanket judgments of a person without knowing him or his sacrifices or contributions. Just as you unfairly judge me. Who in the hell are you? You don't know me or my heart. Idiot.
@lukebccb I'm just referring to the fact that I had personally viewed 'Platoon' before 'The Elephant Man,.' It like it you view 'The Godfather Part III' before 'Raging Bull,' you would say the music in 'Raging Bull' is similiar to that of 'The Godfather Part III.' But I understand what you mean.
Sometimes it is possible to be the Elephant man on the inside and appear as a monster to the world. No matter how noble a man may be. To be unloved and hated for merely existing. It is a burden and a pain that few will ever have to carry. To be considered too different. Is like a declaration of isolation. When I see this video I only see myself. What a monster a man can be to a world that cares nothing about the heart and souls of men. I am a monster too in the eyes of everyone especially women
@PLEASANTDesigns i am a monster in the eyes of world also, even children seem to hate me, i have very unusual appearance because of disease. i am accostomed with people being monsters to me. one thing that always always makes me happy is animals. i have very close connection with them and sometimes cats come running to me.
Hallo, I am so sorry for you. Ja, kitties a doogies are kind in their hearts. They do not have the prejudices that human beings have. Nor the lack of compassion that many women have towards all men who do not fit into the image of what they perceive as acceptable. Few people look at the hearts of Men. Today I watched a woman wow over a man in a low-end BMW. For her, that was all he had to produce to be considered worthwhile. Society is ill. Hug from me to U, Hang in there, Okay?
I've had a painful and debilitating disease called ankylosing spondylitis since I was 15. I am now 51 and much of my spine is now fused together expecially my neck. This is my most favorite movies of all time, because I can relate so to John. When I was on the high school bus one day a bully behind me said why are you so stiff? Turn around and look at me! I could not. He put his hand on top of my head and forced turned it to the left and my neck spine cracked many times and it hurt so bad after.
He knew he wasn't supposed to sleep on his back and lay his head down. He knew it would cause death, and yet he chose to remove the pillow he Routinely would sit up on and sleep just so he could sleep like other people normally Sleep. A very sad Existance and demise Merrick suffered.
@PolakBear Yeah, totally, i hope i didn't make it seem like i was accusing him of Depression. He loved his life and was satisfied. Sleeping in a normal position just became another boundary he wanted to break down, another obstacle he wanted to overcome to prove he was a human like the rest of us. I meant that It was sad he felt The extent of his duality and existence was to prove he could mimic simple Routines an average person would do with ease. He was Beautiful and happy though.
This story is beautiful, but very tragic. John Hurt's performance was astounding. Can anybody tell me the name of the classical piece playing in the background? I love this piece. It was made for this scene...or at least it should have been. Thank you for sharing.
@TheSoundtrack1991 Its famously Samuel Barner's Adagio. And I completely agree with you about John Hurts performance - especially in this scene. Makes me cry everytime I watch it.
Only according to the dramatic and moving ending of the film...In actual fact, Joseph died in the afternoon, on a normal day for him, with its usual routines.. He was still resting on his bed, as was usual as by then he was really ill and every movement was an effort. His lunch was found untouched. Whether it was a tragic accident or deliberate I dont think we'll ever know.
I think that day WAS the happiest day of Merrick's life (a normal day for you and me). He was afraid to have the memories of that day taken away by other cruel memories. And so, he committed suicide by sleeping like a normal person.
@ripmac20 His head was so heavy that they figured it was cause him to suffocate himself. Well, his head was so heavy at that point that it actually dislocated his own neck.
I saw this film for the first time when I was about five and then not for many years after. This one particular scene always stuck with me though - vividly. I cried and it's the first time I remember having an emotional reaction to a movie.
@YalkOne Joseph was a very religious man. His belief in God was very important to him, and a comfort to him towards the end of his life(as the disease worsened). Your comment is disrespectful.
i dont understand why they call him the elephant man, he looks nothing like one..
we only watched part of this movie in religion, its so sad how other people can treat others, like the one part when the nurse walked in and saw him for the first time and she screamed, and he got all afraid and hid in the corner, it made me want to cry! i felt so bad for him.. RIP.
@nicoramadingdong I HATE him being called that - and I sincerely hope that one day soon he'll only be called by his own name.
The scene you describe in the film was actually based on a true incident. When Joseph was brought to the hospital by Treves(after the Liverpool St station incident), an ''unprepared'' nurse walked in on him &screamed,dropping a tray.The most upsetting thing is,not only was Joseph so exhausted &ill, he was so USED to that happening he hardly took any notice of it.
@nicoramadingdong A friend of mine in America had the chance through a group I belong to was able to see his skeleton in England - the general public arent allowed to see it. She told me that beneath it theres still an old label with ''The Elephant Man'' written on it, not even his name. She didnt want to say anything to the curator about it because she didnt want to make a fuss, but if I ever get the chance myself I will certainly ask why there isnt his NAME there - its very upsetting.
At least he died peacefully, and not a slow, painful death like some unfortunate people who were in complete health. The nerve of people these days, murdering for pleasure :(
@Ac1dlicous Yes. Thats what ultimately makes this scene even more emotional. While he passed away in the afternoon, not as film suggests.By this time, he really was succumbing to the disease, and it was hard for him to move about.It was usual he stayed in his bed til afternoon. Who cant watch this without crying their eyes out? Very sad and distressing, but at least at the end he was in a safe place and he had enjoyed many joys and kindnesses.
@TheN64maniac no he knew that when he was at the opera house and they gave him a stand and novation that was his happiest time of his life so he laid down he pretty much killed himself
@Credithelper75 and Lynch makes it so without resorting to any of the crap they have to today. Showing a deformed character without self-pity, who was actually deformed....wouldn't happen today, srsly see the remake of phantom of opera, or that ones where mel gibson or kevin spacey portray disfigured folks. All of them basically still look attractive. Lynch shows the cruelty of Merricks existence without resorting to cheap sentimentalism. Like Merrick, he demands not our pity but respect.
@Konform2zoidberg ...okay mel gibson was kind of bad, but only partially uglied himself up a bit for the part. still, dozens of other examples yasmine bleeth, etc who just half assed it probably due to ego
@Konform2zoidberg I agree with that. I hope they never remake this film ever...In my humble opinion. Mr Merricks was, while very sensitive to how he looked, he accepted it,even as he wasbewildered by his disease. His faith in God was very important to him.Unlike the films suggestion, it was HIS idea to exhibit himself, the only way he KNEW to get out of the workhouse and be as independent as he could. He wanted to earn his own keep, no matter what. Now THAT, surely is deserving of respect.
This movie is one the most beautiful, touching stories of a humble, noble man who had to live with such a cruel affliction. There are only 2 other movies that made me cry more (Passion of the Christ and Jesus of Nazareth). The first time I watched it, I was moved so much. It is an achingly hard movie to watch. May God bless Joseph James Merrick now and for all time.
I watched this movie last night for the first time and I have to say I have never felt such sorrow and compassion for a character in a movie as I did for Joseph Merrick, to see his happiness when he received his gift box of toiletries, and to see his joy when he went to the theatre, its such a beautiful and achingly sad movie.
Both of you, respect each others differences. Whatever he wants to believe, let him. Whatever you want to believe, believe it. Pointless arguments like this are the cause of all wars.
@Transkar some people are too stupid and immature 2 respect and treat people how they want to be treated. I'm 14 and I know that, according 2 his channel Skelaxin is 30 and still didn't figure that out.
@ICETEAPRODUCTIONS1 um dude not to sound condecending but the guy from mask wasn't based on the elephant man. He was a real boy named rocky dennis. In fact there is an article about him on wikipedia. Look it out if you dont beleive me
One thing I know, and sorry for sneaking my religion into this...is that John merrick definitely recieved a true place of rest in the kingdom of god...and I bet you anything that the lord Had him in his arms the minute he entered heaven :)... people should be more gentle , and loving like john merrick. of such is the kingdom of heaven.
But God hath chosen the foolish things of the world to confound the wise; and God hath chosen the weak things of the world to confound the things which are mighty;
I was in tears the first time I saw this movie, to this day, I still tear up over it. Just to see how people can be so cruel over what they don't know and don't want to know. He was a strong spirit to come on to this earth with that condition
is this movie ever going to be re-released on DVD? I tried to order it on Amazon but they said they don't make copies of it anymore, and it is not in any retail stores
the most depressing movie i have ever seen. david lynch is a genius

Joseph is a distant cousin of mine. My grandpa gave my mother a family book and in the back it has a list of famous relatives. He's on it.
But anyways, I wish everyone knew his story.
Maybe people would be less shallow.

'Tis true my form is something odd,
But blaming me is blaming God;
Could I create myself anew
I would not fail in pleasing you.

I would be measured by the soul;

Your comment is disrespectful.

lamona765 10 months ago
i dont understand why they call him the elephant man, he looks nothing like one..
we only watched part of this movie in religion, its so sad how other people can treat others, like the one part when the nurse walked in and saw him for the first time and she screamed, and he got all afraid and hid in the corner, it made me want to cry! i felt so bad for him.. RIP.
nicoramadingdong 10 months ago
@nicoramadingdong I HATE him being called that - and I sincerely hope that one day soon he'll only be called by his own name.
The scene you describe in the film was actually based on a true incident. When Joseph was brought to the hospital by Treves(after the Liverpool St station incident), an ''unprepared'' nurse walked in on him &screamed,dropping a tray.The most upsetting thing is,not only was Joseph so exhausted &ill, he was so USED to that happening he hardly took any notice of it.
MrsJosephMerrick 10 months ago
@MrsJosephMerrick i have to agree with you there, its horrible, he should be called by his name, hes a person with feelings too like honestly people!
nicoramadingdong 10 months ago
@nicoramadingdong A friend of mine in America had the chance through a group I belong to was able to see his skeleton in England - the general public arent allowed to see it. She told me that beneath it theres still an old label with ''The Elephant Man'' written on it, not even his name. She didnt want to say anything to the curator about it because she didnt want to make a fuss, but if I ever get the chance myself I will certainly ask why there isnt his NAME there - its very upsetting.

At least he died peacefully, and not a slow, painful death like some unfortunate people who were in complete health. The nerve of people these days, murdering for pleasure :(

to think the real joseph merrick died like this...
Ac1dlicous 1 year ago
@Ac1dlicous Yes. Thats what ultimately makes this scene even more emotional. While he passed away in the afternoon, not as film suggests.By this time, he really was succumbing to the disease, and it was hard for him to move about.It was usual he stayed in his bed til afternoon. Who cant watch this without crying their eyes out? Very sad and distressing, but at least at the end he was in a safe place and he had enjoyed many joys and kindnesses.
MrsJosephMerrick 1 year ago
This is truely a brilliant film, but I am for the most part unable to watch it because I become to overwhelmed with emotion.

Tis true my form is something odd,
But blaming me is blaming God;
Could I create myself anew
I would not fail in pleasing you.
If I could reach from pole to pole
Or grasp the ocean with a span,
I would be measured by the soul;
The mind's the standard of the man.
and now i know where "tiesto adios for strings" come from

This is with out a doubt the saddest movie ever made. Its almost too much to bear.
Credithelper75 1 year ago
@Credithelper75 and Lynch makes it so without resorting to any of the crap they have to today. Showing a deformed character without self-pity, who was actually deformed....wouldn't happen today, srsly see the remake of phantom of opera, or that ones where mel gibson or kevin spacey portray disfigured folks. All of them basically still look attractive. Lynch shows the cruelty of Merricks existence without resorting to cheap sentimentalism. Like Merrick, he demands not our pity but respect.
Konform2zoidberg 1 year ago 4
@Konform2zoidberg ...okay mel gibson was kind of bad, but only partially uglied himself up a bit for the part. still, dozens of other examples yasmine bleeth, etc who just half assed it probably due to ego
Konform2zoidberg 1 year ago

When will the stream be aweary of flowing under my eye?
When will the wind be aweary of blowing over the sky?
When will the clouds be aweary of fleeting?
When will the heart be aweary of beating.........and nature die?
3:35 - 4:09 (John's mother): Never, oh never!
Nothing will die; the stream flows, the wind blows,
the cloud fleets, the heart beats............Nothing will die.

There are things of which I may not speak;
There are dreams that cannot die;
There are thoughts that make the strong heart weak,
And bring a pallor into the cheek,
And a mist before the eye.
And the words of that fatal song
Come over me like a chill:
‘A boy’s will is the wind’s will,
And the thoughts of youth are long, long thoughts.’
Henry Longfellow
