To Christopholese: If we were to use Tuareg clothing wherever we went, we would spend hours detained at airports, stores, banks, etc. The clothing is not part of any religion, it is a need for those who live in the desert!
I recently got the Aman Iman Cd at the library, heard this song and was so blown away. I checked their band site and saw that they're playing near me in a few weeks. What luck, or magic or synchronicity. Either way, I can't wait to see them. I play some Eastern-influenced guitar by the way - check out "Rosetta West - Yallah," if you can.

Watching this stuff is amazing - I like to imagine them looking out across a desert horizon playing this music into the still clear night over sand dunes instead of inside to a UK audience - beautiful
Tuaregs are not same as taliban or saudi muslims, these are not islamic clothes, these cloths are for the desert, they use some blue and white clothes, the darker on the top, and it protects them from sun. and the shash (scarf) protect them from sand, you need to see the sandstorms in the Sahara and you'll understand. It normal they remove it backstage, it's not conveniant outside the desert, and they wear it in stage to show their identity.
Tuaregs are "culturaly" muslims but not extremist.
@Jonasboll the clothes are not a part of the religion ! its there culture and tradition...its very good in the desert against the hot sun, but when they in europe why should wear that clothes.
the guitar and percussion work in Tinariwen is amazing enough as it is.
but then they just drop in that bass, it slides in like it was never missing, and the beauty of the music begins to radiate outwards like nothing else I've ever heard.
I feel sorry for anyone who has not yet discovered Tinariwen, for they are still lost.
@campbra I was JUST going to mention Hassan Hakmoun, he's great! Will check out the others you mentioned too. Algerian Raï music is also fascinating as well.
[1st verse/Chorus:] I spend the day and still the following night I spent a whole season travelling I spend the day and still the following night I spent a whole season travelling [2nd verse:] You've gone, Mila, you've already gone and I've plunged deeper into my dreams Whatever my thoughts, she occupies them all, and my heart cries out still [3rd verse:] I's a time which separates the beloved from those they love And when you think of them, painful obsessive thoughts are all that come.
After about of week of listening to everything I could find, not just of them but of other ishoumar and Amazigh musicians, I'm ready to call Tinariwen the best rock rand on Earth right now--or at least the best guitar band. I can hear what I liked best in the Beatles, the Byrds, Led Zepplin and Creedence. mixed in with a little Dr. John They real beauty is they are not copying or mimicking anything. They are drinking from the same well.
@inibo I agree with you, but I think their music far surpasses all those 'Western' bands that you mentioned, with maybe the exception of Creedence. it's the hint of mournful passion and a spiritually felt grief in Tinariwen and other 'folk' music (like Creedence) that lends it a beauty that in my opinion the Beatles can't even come close to. That may be controversial to say, but that's what I think.
The more I hear them the more I like them. They are my favorite right now. At first the singing was off-putting, but it's really starting to worm its way in. They make me want to dance. And I'm old.
This is about the best youtube of them I've seen so far.

I've seen them in a professional and very solemn concert hall in Europe where people go on concerts wearing suit and like. Their music is so uplifting that most people stood up and danced by the end of the concert :)
This is one of the VERY best rock/blues/folk/etc. recordings to ever be put on a CD. Ever! -Search on tinariwen cler achel for the studio version here! - It was a knock out to listn to "Aman Iman", where Cler Achel opens up, the first time, the second time .... Fortunately the entire record wasn't HAIR-RAISING to *exactly* the same degree (but still a SUPER-CD!!) :-) Thanks, Tinariwen!
Life is a mirror showing in different forms yet the same... absolutely amazing...!
