This is a very good film and also an important one, carefully sidestepping obvious condemnation and revealing complexity of evil. Judy Garland and Montgomery Clift are very moving an a cast which is uniformly miraculous ( who was the brilliant casting agent?) I mean Dietrich, Widmark, Lancaster, the extraordinarily intelligent Spencer Tracy and Maximillian Schell brilliant in the terrible role. And that's just the main actors...

For someone my age Virginia Christine is such a familiar face, from movies as diverse as High Noon to Invasion of the Body Snatchers, about half the tv shows I watched when I was young, not to mention 21 years as Mrs. Olson the Folger' Coffee woman.

Sadly, among the principal actors only Maximillian Schell is still alive - I know William Shatner is too, but here he's in a supporting role (interesting to see him as Spencer Tracy's aide before he commanded the Enterprise!).

The song is called "Wenn wir marschieren" (When we march) from 1910, hence not a Nazi song in the first place. You may find a good translation if you do a web search for "wenn wir marschieren translation". I find the lyrics rather random and won't try to translate them :)
A remake of this film is in the works with the original role of Spencer Tracy being played by 50 Cent and the role of Burt Lancaster being played by Puff Daddy.The role of Richard Widmark is being portrayed by David Letterman.Also, a cameo appearance by PeeWee Herman is expected.

Anyone who read Mein Kampf knew that Hitler was planning to kill Jews and other undesirables-and Mein Kampf was required reading in Nazi Germany. Still I love her overall as an actress and admire that she did stand up to Nazism. Take care and TTFN.

this is a great piece. a powerful movie. there are so many great performances but a well deserved oscar went to max schell. schell's performance is a masterclass, you will search to find anything like this again. garland and clift, both sick people, turn in performances of their careers. marlene proves here what a great actress she was. it is not an easy movie politically and it is disturbing but please watch this.
The Holocaust was a hoax and the Nuremburg trails were a sham.
